BCCI Mourn Passing Of Former Anti-Doping Consultant Vece Paes
BCCI has mourned Vece Paes, ex-India hockey player and anti-doping consultant, who passed away on August 14.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India on Monday expressed their grief at the passing of former India hockey player and the board's anti-doping consultant Vece Paes, who passed away on August 14 after suffering from an advanced stage of Parkinson's disease.
Paes, who donned several hats in his long association with Indian sports, was a midfielder in the Indian hockey team.
Paes played multiple sports such as football, cricket and rugby and served as the president of the Indian Rugby Football Union from 1996 to 2002.
Paes was associated with the BCCI from October 2010 to March 2018 as an Anti-Doping and Age Verification Consultant.
Paes introduced structured educational programmes for anti-doping within the BCCI, enhancing awareness and compliance among cricketers and support staff.
Paes' expertise and commitment were instrumental in strengthening BCCI's anti-doping education and testing framework, as well as in implementing age-verification and athlete welfare initiatives.
Paes' professional integrity and passion for clean sport left an indelible mark on Indian cricket's support systems, a statement from BCCI said.
On Sunday, August 17, in a poignant moment, young players lined up on either side of the road and raised their sticks to pay their last respects while Paes' hearse made its way into the Maidan tent.
Vece's son, Leander Paes, was inconsolable, even as former India captain Sourav Ganguly joined some officials in comforting Leander by placing his arms around him and offering words of support in his hour of grief.
Among those present were former Indian cricketer Arun Lal and Trinamool Congress leader Derek O'Brien, who joined the bereaved family, friends and members of the sporting fraternity in bidding farewell to Vece, who was part of the Indian team that won the bronze medal at the 1972 Olympics.

'Security in India much better than Pakistan': Hockey India secretary general responds to Asia Cup withdrawals
Pakistan and Oman had withdrawn from the upcoming Men's Hockey Asia Cup in Rajgir, Bihar, with the former citing security concern as the reason for their exit. The Pakistan Hockey Federation had cited security concerns while pulling out of the Asia Cup, which takes place between 29 August and 7 September even as the Indian government agreed to issue visas for their players. That, however, is not the case with Oman, who have withdrawn from the 8-team event reportedly due to financial constraints. Singh added that India's focus remains on successfully hosting the tournament, the winner of which will qualify for next year's World Cup in Belgium and Netherlands. 'Who is coming and who is not coming, we don't care about that. Whoever has qualified, whoever is coming, we welcome everyone to India. 'For us, we have to organise this as a grand success, and whoever is coming, we welcome them wholeheartedly,' he added. Team India face China in their opening game on 29 August before taking on Japan and Kazakhstan on 31 August and 1 September respectively. The top two teams from each group compete in the Super4s which take place from 3 to 6 September, in which each team plays each of the remaining three sides once round-robin style. Anantjeet Singh Naruka Shoots Gold At Asian Championships
Indian shooter Anantjeet Singh Naruka fired his way to his first individual gold medal in the Asian Championships after edging out Kuwait's Mansour Al Rashidi in the men's skeet final here on Wednesday. Earlier in the day, the Indian pair of Saurabh Chaudhary and rising teenager Suruchi Inder Singh clinched the 10m air pistol mixed team bronze, beating Chinese Taipei. Naruka finished on top of the podium after prevailing over former Asian Games champion Al Rashidi 57-56 in the final. Al-Ishaq Ali Ahmed of Qatar settled for the bronze medal with 43. The 27-year-old Naruka, who has won team gold and mixed team gold in the 2023 edition of the championships, qualified for the final in second position with 119 after five rounds, while Kuwait's Abdulaziz Alsaad led the pack with 120 on their way to the final. Al Rashidi was third in the qualification with 119. For Naruka, an Asian Games silver medallist, this was his fifth medal overall in the continental tournament. Earlier, the duo of Saurabh and Suruchi defeated Liu Heng-Yu and Hsieh Hsiang-Chen 17-9 to add to the individual bronze that double Olympic-medallist Manu Bhaker had won in the women's 10m air pistol competition on Tuesday. The Indian pair qualified for the medal round in fifth place with Suruchi firing 292 and Saurabh scoring 286. The duo aggregated 578 in qualification as six teams made it to the medal round.
