Model ditches her life for the African desert after being robbed at gunpoint
It was a moment that Aleks will never forget - and one that changed the course of her entire life. As a actor and model living in New York, she was walking home late at night from a film set, when she was suddenly attacked.
A man pushed a gun up against her forehead. Fortunately, when they realised she didn't have anything valuable, they shouted 'Move!' and ran off. Aleks took this harrowing ordeal as a literal instruction.
She would move. Two weeks later she was on a plane to Namibia - she was only actually planning to stay for a couple of weeks, but was offered a job and stayed for 13 years.
Now she is living as a conservationist in the harsh environment of the Kalahari Desert in Botswana, where her nearest neighbours are lions, leopards and cheetah.
Aleks Orbeck Nilssen, now 34, tells her incredible story to adventurer Ben Fogle, in a brand new series of New Lives In The Wild, which starts tonight (Aug 14) on Channel 5 at 9pm.
The people Ben Fogle meets in the series have moved to some of the most remote locations on Earth. Are they daring or just downright crazy? It's a question Ben has asked himself many times, but he's always happy to make the epic journey to check it out.
In the episode, he travels over 8,250km to Maun in Botswana, before driving east for a further five hours to meet Norwegian conservationist, model and bush guide Aleks.
She has moved to the Kalahari Desert and set up a 'Wisdom Academy' for indigenous people, but life is tough. 'The Kalahari kind of hates you,' she laughs. Ben is overwhelmed to be greeted by an entire community of local bush people, then further surprised to see a luxurious tourist camp nearby, run by Aleks's husband Ralph. It's a tale of two worlds.
Ben finds out how Aleks was a model in her teens, having been scouted at the age of 13, then when she was 18 volunteered at an animal sanctuary in Namibia. She is now in Botswana because she got married. But she insists: 'I've got a job to do on this planet and I'm on a mission and that doesn't stop just because I fall in love.'
Aleks recalls: 'As a young model I travelled the world in a very short time. I didn't realise it would be so lonely, I was extremely unhappy.' So she moved to New York. Aleks says: 'I was walking home from a film set late at night. I heard these catcalls, which is quite common in New york so I just carried on walking.
"Then they grabbed me and wanted to get money from me. While I am digging through my bag looking for something I suddenly feel something kiss my forehead."
She continues: "That was a gun and so I was held at gunpoint. I went from having so much control, then this moment someone takes away all these control. When they realised I didn't have anything, they just said 'Move' and left. I went back to my flat and didn't really know what to do. I felt like it was a universal bitch slap. And the fact that he said move, it felt like an instruction."
She adds: 'I said to myself I'm going to spin the globe and if my finger lands in the ocean I'll go on a gap year. And if it lands on Norway I can spin again. And if it lands on a country I'll go there, unless there's a civil war. And it was Namibia.
"Two weeks later I was on the plane. I had a weird feeling like roots were growing out of my feet. When I arrived it was like 'I'm home, but I don't know why'. I was offered a job so I took a bold leap and went all in.
"I met the tribe that I have now been working with for 14 years and realised I had to work with them. They've completely saved me, transformed me. They've brought nature to life around me. Could you get a better gift than that?'
Ben says: 'I've always loved this idea that some of us weren't necessarily born where we feel we belong. That's what people spend their life searching for and if you're one of the lucky ones, like Aleks, you find it. She's had beauty, money, travel, glitz and glamour, but none of them brought her the happiness that she has finally found here in the desert.'

Shock reason pop star Dannii Minogue has been spotted in her hometown of Melbourne - after living in the UK for 30 years
, who lived in the UK for 30 years, looked very sad on Thursday when she was spotted out and about in Melbourne. She could be seen taking comfort from young Aussie actor Harrison Popple as she fought back tears. But all was not as it seems, as the Australian pop star, 53, was in St Kilda filming scenes for her glamorous TV comeback on a new Channel 5 drama, Imposter. The singer, who moved back Down Under in 2021 to be closer to her family, proved she's still got what it takes to be a screen star, decades after she quit acting. While filming, the hitmaker was garbed in a summery dress with watercolour and horse detailing. She topped it with a baby blue trench-coat and matching wedge heels as she shot emotional scenes with her co-star. Dannii appeared overjoyed to be on-set, opting for a natural glam look as she left her tresses down in loose waves. In between takes, Dannii could be seen keeping warm in a fluffy pink robe and comfortable boots as she ran lines with Harrison. She made sure to stay hydrated, keeping a water bottle clutched in her manicured hands whenever she took a break. One scene saw the star looking morose as she sat down at a picnic table with her fellow actors. Dannii got her start as a small screen darling on Young Talent Time and Home and Away, but jetted off to London in the early '90s to pursue global fame. Three decades after she left acting behind, the superstar is set to return to screens in the four-part murder mystery Imposter. The Aussie star will share the screen with former Coronation Street UK favourite Kym Marsh and Neighbours legend Jackie Woodburne. Jackie, 69, looked almost unrecognisable from her Susan Kennedy days, now sporting a much more mature look with silver hair. Dannii was a vision in baby blue while on set The cast were spotted on set in Melbourne, with filming underway in St Kilda where the popular eatery Riva was dressed as O'Riley On The Pier Hotel for the production. Melbourne will host all the filming, with other Aussie TV stars, Don Hany and Jane Harber, also spotted on set. Imposter is said to be centred around a murder at a seaside resort. Jackie will play matriarch Helen, whose refusal to sell her seaside hotel sparks a dramatic family feud with her three adult children. The series marks Jackie's first non-Neighbours role in more than 30 years. The plot thickens when Amanda, played by Kym, arrives claiming to be Helen's long-lost daughter given up for adoption years ago. As Amanda integrates into the family, doubts arise about her true identity, leading to a gripping tale of deception and betrayal that culminates in murder. Jackie had played beloved Neighbours character Susan, the wife of co-star Alan Fletcher's character Dr Karl Kennedy, since 1994. Since leaving Home and Away in 1990, Dannii has had a successful career, starring on The X Factor and more recently fronting the dating show I Kissed A Boy.

Ben Affleck takes on dad duty with children Fin and Samuel as they grab lunch in Santa Monica
Ben Affleck embraced dad duty as he spent quality time with two of his children as they enjoyed lunch together in Santa Monica on Friday. The 53-year-old Oscar winner - whose ex Jennifer Lopez recently posed up a storm for a sultry snap - was joined by Fin, 16, and Samuel, 13, to grab a bite to eat at a local restaurant. The actor shares the two teens as well as daughter Violet, 19, with ex-wife Jennifer Garner - whom he was married to from 2005 until their divorce in 2018. Affleck kept it casual wearing a white button up as well as a pair of khaki pants and comfy sneakers. The trio also appeared to stop by a bakery called Huckleberry in the same area, with the Hollywood star carrying a paper bag from the eatery. He was seen strolling closely next to Fin and Samuel as they began to head to their next destination. Affleck has been spending time with his kids before school starts and was also spotted on a father-son outing with Samuel last month in July. At the time, the pair visited a mall with the actor's German Shepherd also tagging along for the daytime excursion. The same month, the Good Will Hunting actor played the doting family man as he joined ex Jennifer Garner and their kids at a baseball game in Boston. He attended a Red Sox match as he traveled to the state of Massachusetts where he grew up and sat next to Garner as well as Fin and Samuel at Fenway Park. Affleck was born in California, but relocated with his family to Massachusetts where they eventually settled in the city of Cambridge - which is just north west of the city of Boston. Despite their split, both Affleck and Garner have maintained a positive relationship while raising their three children. Earlier in March, the star also made loving remarks towards Garner during an interview with GQ. He reflected on his divorce from Jennifer Lopez as well as his bond with Garner following their own split. 'I'm really lucky that I have a really good co-parent and partner in Jennifer Garner, the kids' mom, who's wonderful and great and we work together well,' Affleck told the outlet. The same month, the Good Will Hunting actor played the doting family man as he joined ex Jennifer Garner and their kids at a baseball game in Boston (seen above) However, Garner continues to move on with her romance with John Miller and it was reported in April that he is 'basically living' with the actress, a source told Us Weekly. Earlier this month, the 13 Going On 30 actress was seen sporting a glittering band on her ring finger - sparking speculation about her relationship status with Miller. Ben also settled his divorce from Jennifer Lopez in January - after she had filed in August 2024 on their second wedding anniversary. But the former couple have been facing struggles when it came to selling their $68 million Beverly Hills mansion. The pair initially purchased the property in cash for $60.8 million in May 2023, and listed the sprawling estate in July of last year. Back in April, sources told TMZ that Affleck was eager to lower the price of the house while Lopez was not ready to do so - despite there not being much interest in the abode. 'Jennifer thinks they can get more money for the home, so she wants to keep the price as is. But the real estate market is not there and it's not selling,' one insider told Us Weekly. In May, it was revealed that the two stars slashed the price on the mansion - which was dropped by $8 million. Despite cutting the price, Affleck and Lopez made the decision to completely take the home off the market last month in July. 'While they've been hoping to sell the property, they've also been hesitant to take a big loss,' a source told People at the time. 'They lowered the price to get more interest and when this didn't happen, they were advised to take it off the market. It was a business decision that they made together.' The insider further expressed, 'It's a rough sellers market and especially for that price point. Taking it off the market until it's more of a seller friendly climate, seems like the smartest decision.' Lopez has also been filtering through a busy summer and recently concluded her Up All Night tour earlier this month on August 12 in Sardinia, Italy. She will take to the stage again later this year as she is set to return to Las Vegas for an upcoming residency also called Up All Night Live. The singer will perform at The Colosseum at Caesars Palace on select dates beginning from December 30 through March of next year. Lopez has also taken on a leading role in the upcoming musical drama film Kiss Of The Spider Woman - which was produced by her ex Affleck and also Matt Damon. The mom-of-two took portrays the character of Ingrid Luna/Aurora/The Spider Woman in the project, which was directed by Bill Condon. The movie is an adaptation of the 1976 novel of the same name written by Manuel Puig - and also stars Diego Luna and Tonatiuh. Kiss Of The Spider Woman premiered at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival in January and will officially hit theaters later this year on October 10.
