Terre Haute Mayor proclaims April 7-12 Shoe Bus Week
TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV)— Terre Haute Mayor Brandon Sakbun will be delivering a proclamation on April 7 in honor of a fundraiser held by the Terre Haute Women's Club.
At 2 p.m. on April 7, the mayor will be proclaiming April 7-12 as Shoe Bus Week in Vigo County. The final day of Shoe Bus Week will culminate in the Terre Haute Women's Club Spring fundraiser at the Hulman Center. This event is called the Cruise for Shoes: A Tasting Trip Around the World. The fundraiser will consist of six food and drink stations representing six different countries and supplied by local restaurants. As part of the travel theme, attendees will pick up a passport at the door and get stamps from each country as they sample around the world with food and drink pairings.
Once you've gone through all the countries, you'll end up in the main atrium, where you can enjoy Dueling Pianos from Poplar Pub, a 360-degree photo booth, a cigar rolling station, and a tour of the Shoe Bus. Several guests can win door prize packages from local businesses as well. Tickets for the event are $65 and can be purchased at this link. Donations can be made directly to the Shoe Bus Project at this link or by mailing a check to Terre Haute Women's Club, PO Box 3217, Terre Haute, IN 47803.
The Terre Haute Women's Club provides a new pair of athletic shoes and two pairs of socks for up to 1,200 children annually in the Vigo County School System. These are purchased with fundraiser funds by the club each year for children from Kindergarten through 12th grade.

Larry Bird Museum draws more than 12,000 visitors in first year
TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV)— In the first year, the Larry Bird Museum in downtown Terre Haute has drawn more than 12,000 visitors from around the globe. Since its opening on May 30, 2024, the museum has drawn visitors from nearly every state and beyond to put Terre Haute on the map for basketball enthusiasts. In addition to in-person traffic, the website has had over 26,000 visitors, with traction continuing to grow. 'The success of the Larry Bird Museum is a success for our entire community,' said Karen Dyer, Executive Director of the Terre Haute Convention and Visitors Bureau. 'It celebrates the pride we feel in Larry's legacy and the way his story continues to inspire people of all ages. This museum has added momentum and a sense of thriving for our downtown and connected us with fans from far beyond Indiana.' The museum, which is contained inside the Terre Haute Convention Center, holds personal memorabilia, interactive exhibits, free-throw shooting areas, trivia challenges, exclusive video footage, a wingspan measuring wall, and historical storytelling chronicling Bird's journey from French Lick to the global stage. 'The museum represents the power of partnership,' said Chris Switzer, President of the Vigo County Capital Improvement Board. 'It took years of vision and community commitment to bring this to life, and now we get to see the payoff — not only in tourism numbers, but in what it means to our local pride and our identity.' The museum has also hosted multiple school tour groups. Tours for school and community groups can be scheduled in advance through the museum's website. To celebrate the anniversary of the museum's opening, guests during the month of June will receive a free mini commemorative basketball while supplies last. Due to the museum's success, local leaders are already planning enhancements to expand the experience next year and continue to grow the Hoops Heritage Trail. the museum is free and open to the public. Indiana State Police give travel tips ahead of holiday weekend
FARMERSBURG, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) – Memorial Day weekend is upon us, and many people will be traveling. Local police are urging drivers to be safe on the roadways. Sgt. Matt Ames with the Indiana State Police Putnamville Post said the busiest travel time is expected to be Friday through Saturday afternoon. He said people should be aware of reckless drivers, and he shared some tips for people who are traveling. 'When it's time to drive, be ready to drive,' said Sgt. Ames. 'Make sure your vehicle is ready to go, you're fueled up, have good tires, the windshield wipers are working, and you're stowing your phone so therefore all your attention is on driving.'
