Tech secretary suggests Nigel Farage is on side of Jimmy Savile over online law
Science Secretary Peter Kyle has said Nigel Farage is on the side of modern-day equivalents of Jimmy Savile, over his opposition to the Online Safety Act.
One of the most contentious parts of the law, introducing age verification to websites hosting porn and other 'adult content', came into effect on Friday.
The changes have generated backlash from internet users, and Farage used a Reform UK press conference yesterday to pledge his party would repeal the act if elected to government.
In an appearance on Sky News this morning, Kyle said the move would stop 'strange adults getting in touch with children'.
He said: 'We have people out there who are extreme pornographers peddling hate, peddling violence. Nigel Farage is on their side.
Make no mistake about it, if people like Jimmy Savile were alive today, he'd be perpetrating his crimes online, and Nigel Farage is saying he's on their side, not the side of children.'

Asked twice to clarify if he was claiming the Reform leader was on the side of Savile, one of the worst sexual predators in British history, the Science Secretary did not backtrack.
Kyle added: 'Nigel Farage is on the side of turning the clock back to the time when strange adults, strangers can get in touch via messaging apps with children.'
In a post on X following the broadcast, Farage called the minister's comments 'disgusting', writing: 'He should do the right thing and apologise.'
Kyle responded by quoting the post and adding: 'If you want to overturn the Online Safety Act you are on the side of predators. It is as simple as that.' More Trending
Speaking on Sky News later in the morning, former Reform chairman Zia Yusuf said the comments were 'one of the most outrageous and disgusting things a politician has said in the political arena that I can remember'.

He continued: 'Levelling that allegation, talking about Jimmy Savile in that way, does nothing other than denigrate the victims of Jimmy Savile.'
Yusuf previously suggested the Online Safety Act was turning the UK in a 'dystopian Chinese surveillance state'.
A petition calling on the government to repeal the act has gathered more than 380,000 signatures online, meaning Parliament will consider it for a debate.

Children left in pools of blood after knifeman rampages through school in Hunan,
A knifeman went on a rampage at a primary school in southern China, leaving children on the floor in pools of blood. Video footage showed locals surrounding a girl lying on the road bleeding. Local reports said two people had been killed and another three injured in the attack, which occurred at 6pm local time on Sunday at the Jinnan primary school in the city of Leiyang in Hunan province. Daredevil scales Copenhagen's tallest hotel before leaping from top

George King-Thompson, who goes by Shardclimber on Instagram, made the plunge off the Radisson Blu Scandinavia hotel in the Danish capital. The influencer said he previously attempted the feat in 2021, but came five metres short from the summit due to unscrewed vents. He ended up abandoning the dive and climbing down, before being arrested. Four years later, he successfully jumped off the tower in what he called a 'redemption'. The four-star hotel is located on the Stadsgraven canal. A clip of George undertaking his challenge at 5am showed him using metal vents to climb up the side of the skyscraper. After jumping off the edge, a red and black parachute bursts out of his bag just in the nick of time. He then landed safely in the car park. Describing the trepidation as he reached the tower's summit, he wrote: 'Leading up to this. Morale was low. There were thoughts and emotions. Thoughts which made me want to abort and fly back home. 'I knew I never would. 'Instead I lay in a field in my bivvy. In the rain. Patiently waiting for the weather to get good.' He continued: 'It is hard to see the significance of these kinds of moments in the present. It just feels torturous. Looking back… it's beautiful. It's the test. 'Eventually, the gods open up a weather window. The fear evaporates and I'm left cold and clinical.' He ascended the 310-metre, 72-storey glass structure, without the aid of ropes or suction pads, in July 2019. The climb landed him in jail as it breached a court injunction sought by the tower's owners in 2018 to prevent a protest about the number of empty apartments in the landmark. Two years later, in 2021, he returned to London to mount two more skyscrapers within two weeks, the Stratosphere Tower and the 93-metre, 23-storey Unex Tower. Why Vance is worth watching this summer
America's two most powerful men are visiting Britain this summer. After Donald Trump's trip to Scotland last month, his Vice President is expected shortly in the Cotswolds. Both men share an interest in the UK – but for different reasons. Trump's ties are ancestral; Vance's passion is more intellectual. 'What's going on with Reform?' he asked Peter Mandelson at a recent function. His choice of England as a holiday destination reflects an engagement in this country's politics. Among Vance's friends and contacts are several prominent British academics. They include Blue Labour founder Maurice Glasman, who corresponded with Vance over email, and James Orr, with whom Vance bonded in 2019 after converting to Catholicism. Shortly after his election to the Senate in January 2023, he came to London and was keen to meet with prominent conservatives. As Vice President, he has shown an eagerness to use his office to engage in UK domestic issues. The best example of this was his Munich Security Conference speech in February. Here he attacked successive British governments for ignoring voter concerns on migration and free speech. He demonstrated too a level of familiarity with specific UK case studies – including a man in Bournemouth convicted for praying outside an abortion clinic. Vance has subsequently weighed in on different European issues, calling the continent the 'cradle of Western civilisation'. All this is to say that Vance is willing and able to use his status to shape the dynamics of the UK-US relationship and, potentially, the future of British conservatism. Right-to-life groups in this country were ecstatic when Vance raised the little-known-case of the Bournemouth abortion clinic. The Vice Presidency might have once been dismissed as 'not worth a bucket of warm piss' – but JD Vance has shown that it affords a bully pulpit with considerable clout in the social media age. Prominent figures in both Reform and the Conservative party are clearly aware of this dynamic. Allies of the Vice President have already met with senior members of Nigel Farage's party. The Clacton MP, who made little comment about Trump's Scotland visit, was this week willing to publicly indulge talk of a meeting with Vance when interviewed on LBC. Other engagements are expected with other leading conservative personalities of interest. Such engagements are timely, given Vance's status as the Intellectual-in-Chief of this White House. For now, he remains the second most powerful in the United States – but all that could change very shortly. The race for 2028 is set to begin in earnest in about 18 months' time and Vance is in prime position to succeed Trump as the Republican nominee. Much as how Thatcher and Reagan first met in 1975, an engagement with Vance this summer could prove most fruitful in four years' time.
