India's Modi vows no compromise on farmers interests amid Trump's tariff salvo

NEW DELHI: Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Thursday he will not compromise the interests of the country's farmers even if he has to pay a heavy price, in his first comments after U.S. President Donald Trump's salvo of a 50% tariff on Indian goods. 'For us, our farmers' welfare is supreme,' Modi said at an event in New Delhi. 'India will never compromise on the wellbeing of its farmers, dairy (sector) and fishermen. And I know personally I will have to pay a heavy price for it,' he said. Trump announced an additional 25% tariff on Indian goods on Wednesday, raising the total duty to 50% — among the highest imposed on any U.S. trading partner. The new tariff, effective August 28, is meant to penalise India for continuing to buy Russian oil, Trump has said. While Modi did not explicitly mention the U.S. or the collapsed trade talks, his comments marked a clear defence of India's position. Trade talks between India and the United States broke down after five rounds of negotiations over disagreement on opening India's vast farm and dairy sectors and stopping Russian oil purchases. India's foreign ministry has called the U.S. decision 'extremely unfortunate' and said it would 'take all necessary steps to protect its national interests.' The U.S. has yet to impose similar tariffs for China, the biggest buyer of Russian oil. Experts say China's dominance in rare earth minerals — critical to high-tech industries — gives it leverage that India currently lacks. 'The U.S. tariff hike lacks logic,' Dammu Ravi, secretary of economic relations in India's foreign ministry, told reporters. Trump hikes tariff on India to 50% over 'oil purchases from Russia' 'This is a temporary aberration, a temporary problem that the country will face, but in course of time, we are confident that the world will find solutions.' India is already signaling it may seek to rebalance its global partnerships. Modi is preparing for his first visit to China in over seven years, suggesting a potential diplomatic realignment amid growing tensions with Washington. Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva said on Wednesday he would initiate a conversation among the BRICS group of developing nations about how to tackle Trump's tariffs. He said he planned to call Modi and China's Xi Jinping. The BRICS group also includes Russia and South Africa. India's Ravi added that 'like-minded countries will look for cooperation and economic engagement that will be mutually beneficial to all sides.' Modi faces mounting domestic pressure Both supporters of Modi and the opposition Congress party have called on him to respond firmly to the U.S. tariffs, urging action 'with self-respect and dignity.' 'India's national interest is supreme. Any nation that arbitrarily penalises India for its time-tested policy of strategic autonomy, rooted in the ideology of non-alignment, does not understand the steel frame India is made of,' Congress party president Mallikarjun Kharge said. Indian industry, already struggling with global headwinds, has expressed alarm. Sudhir Sekhri, chairman of the Apparel Export Promotion Council, said: 'There is no way the industry can absorb such a steep hike'. He demanded fiscal support from the government. Indian billionaire Mukesh Ambani's Reliance Industries in its annual report said continuing geopolitical and tariff-related uncertainties may affect trade flows and demand-supply balance. India's equity market, which has been weakening due to tariff risks and muted earnings growth slipped another 0.5% on Thursday to three-month lows. The reaction was muted as investors bet on the tariffs being negotiated down.

Putin meets India's security chief amid US tariffs row

MOSCOW: Russian President Vladimir Putin met India's national security advisor on Thursday, a day after Washington hiked tariffs on New Dehli over its purchases of Moscow's oil. US President Donald Trump imposed the additional 25-percent tariff on Indian goods, coming into place in three weeks, as part of a campaign to pressure Russia into ending its offensive of Ukraine by affecting its trade partners. India is a major buyer of Russian oil, a key source of revenue for Moscow's state budget. Russia is also one of India's top arms suppliers and the warm ties between the two countries date back to the Soviet era. Trump hikes tariff on India to 50% over 'oil purchases from Russia' The Kremlin published footage of Putin shaking hands with Ajit Doval, though provided no details of their discussions. At an earlier meeting in Moscow, Doval said that the dates for a visit to India by Putin were 'almost finalized'. The Kremlin slammed calls to 'force countries to sever trading relations' with Russia as 'illegitimate', without directly mentioning Trump. Ukraine's Western allies have sought to cut Russia's export earnings since Moscow launched its military assault in February 2022. But Russia has been able to redirect energy sales away from Europe to countries including India and China, ensuring the multi-billion-dollar flow of funds has continued. India has argued it imported oil 'from Russia because traditional supplies were diverted to Europe after the outbreak of the conflict'.

US stocks up as market shrugs off tariff increases

NEW YORK: Wall Street stocks rose early Thursday, extending an upward run as markets shrugged off a spate of fresh US tariff increases that went into effect at midnight. Under a White House policy that had been telegraphed, import duties rose from 10 percent to levels between 15 percent and 41 percent for a list of trading partners. About 20 minutes into trading, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was up 0.4 percent at 44,361.65. The broad-based S&P 500 climbed 0.5 percent to 6,379.11, while the tech-rich Nasdaq Composite Index gained 0.9 percent to 21,357.96, above its all-time closing record. Wall Street boosted by earnings, Fed rate cut hopes In the last day alone, US President Donald Trump has also announced higher tariffs on India and 100-percent levy on semiconductor companies that don't build in the United States. But investors have been embracing a view that the US economy remains on solid footing and that the impact of levies has not been as bad as feared. 'The chip tariffs certainly sound terrible on the headline,' said Steve Sosnick of Interactive Brokers. 'But there's so many exemptions … so it's perceived to be having so many loopholes that it's not bad news.' Investor mood 'has been relentlessly positive, interpreting the news flow like a glass half-full day,' Sosnick said. The early gains on Wall Street came as the Bank of England cut its key interest rate by a quarter point to four percent, the lowest level in 2.5 years. Among individual companies, Intel dropped 1.3 percent as Trump called on the chipmaker's CEO, Lip-Bu Tan, to resign after a Republican Senator raised national security concerns over his links to firms in China. Eli Lilly plunged 13.1 percent despite reporting a near-doubling of profits on higher revenues. The drugmaker also released results of clinical testing of a weight loss pill that looked positive 'on the surface,' but indicated less impact than candidates by other companies, said
