The revelation to South Korean daily JoongAng Ilbo provided a rare first-hand account from a senior official of the secretive regime regarding the life of its highly private family.
Ryu Hyun-woo,
North Korea 's acting ambassador to Kuwait when he defected to South Korea in 2019, told local media he had met Kim Yo-jong's family in 2014 during a visit to the tomb of Ko Yong-hui, mother of the Kim siblings.
Speculation about Kim Yo-jong's marital status began on New Year's Day in 2015 when a newspaper photo showed her visiting an orphanage, wearing a ring.
In 2014, multiple media outlets reported that she had married Choe Song, the son of Choe Ryong-hae, one of North Korea's most powerful officials.

North Korea brands South ‘faithful dog' of US, says reunification ‘will never' happen

The powerful sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un said her country would never see South Korea as a partner for diplomacy, state media reported on Wednesday in what was her latest taunt of Seoul's new efforts to mend ties. Advertisement Kim Yo-jong, who is one of her brother's top foreign policy officials, denounced the ongoing South Korea-US military drills as a 'reckless' invasion rehearsal and claimed Seoul's peace gestures conceal a 'sinister intention' against Pyongyang. Her comments came during a meeting on Tuesday with senior Foreign Ministry officials about her brother's diplomatic strategies in the face of persistent threats from rivals and a rapidly shifting geopolitical landscape, the North's official Korean Central News Agency said. On Monday, the North Korean leader condemned the South Korean–US military drills and vowed a rapid expansion of his nuclear forces as he inspected his most advanced warship being fitted with nuclear-capable systems. Kim Jong Un calls for rapid nuclear buildup

Kim Jong Un calls for rapid nuclear buildup Kim Jong Un said North Korea needs to rapidly expand its nuclear armament as US-South Korea military exercises show their 'hostile' intentions. Photo: Reuters North Korea leader Kim Jong Un said his country needed to rapidly expand its nuclear armament and called US-South Korea military exercises an "obvious expression of their will to provoke war," state media KCNA reported on Tuesday. South Korea and its ally the United States kicked off joint military drills this week, including testing an upgraded response to heightened North Korean nuclear threats. Pyongyang has traditionally criticised those joint drills as rehearsals for invasion and in some cases responded with weapons tests, but Seoul and Washington say they are purely defensive. The exercises were a "clear expression of stand of openly revealing their intention to remain most hostile and confrontational" to North Korea, Kim said during his visit to a navy destroyer, according to KCNA. He said the security environment required the North to "rapidly expand" its nuclear armament, noting that recent US- South Korea exercises involved a "nuclear element". (Reuters)

South Korea, US kick off Ulchi Freedom Shield drills with 21,000 troops

South Korea and the United States began their annual large-scale joint military exercise on Monday to better cope with threats from nuclear-armed North Korea , which has warned the drills would deepen regional tensions and vowed to respond to 'any provocation' against its territory. The 11-day Ulchi Freedom Shield, the second of two large-scale exercises held annually in South Korea, after another set in March, will involve 21,000 soldiers, including 18,000 South Koreans, in computer-simulated command post operations and field training. The drills, which the allies describe as defensive, could trigger a response from North Korea, which has long portrayed the exercises as invasion rehearsals and has often used them as a pretext for military demonstrations and weapons tests aimed at advancing its nuclear programme. In a statement last week, North Korean Defence Minister No Kwang-chol said the drills showed the allies' stance of 'military confrontation' with the North and declared that its forces would be ready to counteract 'any provocation going beyond the boundary line'.
