Smokey Robinson under criminal investigation
Smokey Robinson under criminal investigation US singer Smokey Robinson pictured at the 50th Annual American Music Awards in Los Angeles in 2022. File photo: AFP Motown legend Smokey Robinson is under criminal investigation, law enforcement in Los Angeles said on Thursday, just days after he was sued by four former housekeepers who allege the soul singer repeatedly raped and sexually assaulted them. "The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department Special Victims Bureau is actively investigating criminal allegations involving William Robinson AKA 'Smokey Robinson,'" said a statement sent to AFP. The development comes after a multimillion dollar lawsuit was filed in a Los Angeles court claiming the 85-year-old forced himself on female employees multiple times over a number of years, often when his wife was not at home. The sheriff's department would not confirm the substance of their investigation, but lawyers for the women in the suit told AFP their clients were cooperating with the probe. One plaintiff alleges the "Tracks of My Tears" singer would summon her to his bedroom in his Los Angeles area home, and greet her wearing only his underwear. He would then sexually assault her, despite her protestations, with the suit claiming there were seven such attacks between March 2023 and when she felt compelled to resign in February 2024. Another former housekeeper alleges Robinson assaulted her more than 20 times over a four-year period, while a third says in the suit that she was "sexually harassed, sexually assaulted and raped" throughout her 12-year employment until 2024. The fourth woman says the singer began assaulting her in 2007 when she travelled with him to his Las Vegas home. None of the women are named in the case, which is common in cases involving claims of sexual assault. The lawsuit, which is seeking at least US$50 million in damages, says none of the women reported the assaults at the time because they were intimidated by Robinson's celebrity, and feared attacks on their character. Robinson was one of the founding members of The Miracles, a Detroit-based outfit that came together in the 1950s. The group had dozens of chart hits, including the smash "The Tears of a Clown" in 1967. (AFP)

Meet contemporary Christian singer Lauren Daigle: the Louisiana native was rejected by American Idol but performed at this year's Super Bowl, and courted controversy for going on Ellen DeGeneres' show
This February, the Super Bowl saw the Philadelphia Eagles crush the Kansas City Chiefs at the New Orleans Caesars Superdome. No doubt Taylor Swift, who's dating Chiefs' tight end Travis Kelce, was disappointed. But alongside the game, fans were treated to exciting performances by Kendrick Lamar – who headlined the halftime show – and Jon Batiste Also taking the stage was Lauren Daigle. The 33-year-old contemporary Christian singer was joined by Trombone Shorty and two other instrumentalists for a Louisiana-inspired big band performance of 'America the Beautiful'. 'My mum called our house 'The Music Box,' because any time I was awake I would be singing,' she revealed in an interview with MTV. She struggled with illness as a teenager Lauren Daigle battled a serious illness in her teenage years. Photo: @lauren_daigle/Instagram Daigle spent the last stretch of high school studying from home after she contracted cytomegalovirus at the age of 15, according to The Guardian. Homebound for around two years, she found respite in music after her mum signed her up for singing lessons. Documentary on Hong Kong journalist Ronson Chan withdrawn from overseas screenings, citing ‘pressure'
A documentary on Hong Kong journalist Ronson Chan has been withdrawn from screenings in Taiwan, Canada, the US, and the UK, citing 'pressure on the interviewee.' The documentary, titled A Single Spark A Little Blaze, was scheduled to be screened overseas alongside 11 other short films to showcase this year's Hong Kong Indie Short Film Award finalists. Taiwan-based independent filmmaking organisation Ying E Chi organised the film award and the screenings. 'Due to the pressure on the interviewee, the director of 'A Single Spark A Little Blaze' decided to withdraw from all screenings,' the organiser said in a statement on Facebook on Tuesday. 'We sincerely regret it, but we respect the decision of the director and the interviewee,' the statement also read. HKFP understands that the documentary features Chan as the sole interviewee. A Single Spark A Little Blaze, a short film directed by Hong Kong independent journalist Cheng CC, follows Chan's experience over the past few years. Chan told HKFP over the phone on Wednesday that he could not reveal the source of the pressure. 'Of course, I can't say who gave me the order or the reminder… It's a kind reminder, nevertheless,' Chan said in Cantonese. Cheng told HKFP that she had no comments on the matter. The documentary was scheduled to be shown in five cities – New Taipei City in Taiwan, Toronto and Vancouver in Canada, Los Angeles in the US, and Manchester in the UK – from late June to early July. Ying E Chi also said A Single Spark A Little Blaze would continue to participate in the film award's final competition. Growing pressure Chan was the head of the Hong Kong Journalist Association (HKJA), an embattled local press union, from June 2021 to June 2024. He announced in May last year that he would not seek another term as HKJA president because of growing pressure from 'false information and malicious smearing.' The veteran journalist was also a senior editor at the now-shuttered Stand News in 2021, when authorities charged the news outlet with sedition and froze its assets totalling HK$61 million. Chan was briefly detained for questioning after a police raid at Stand News but was not prosecuted. In September, former Stand News chief editor Chung Pui-kuen was jailed for one year and nine months over publishing 'seditious' materials, while former acting editor-in-chief Patrick Lam was immediately released after sentencing due to a rare disease. Chan joined the local media outlet Channel C in 2022. The outlet halted its operations in late April after police arrested a director at its parent company for alleged government loan fraud.
