
Researchers asked AI to show a typical Australian dad: he was white and had an iguana
Published by Oxford University Press, our new research on how generative AI depicts Australian themes directly challenges this perception.
We found when generative AIs produce images of Australia and Australians, these outputs are riddled with bias. They reproduce sexist and racist caricatures more at home in the country's imagined monocultural past.
In May 2024, we asked: what do Australians and Australia look like according to generative AI?
To answer this question, we entered 55 different text prompts into five of the most popular image-producing generative AI tools: Adobe Firefly, Dream Studio, Dall-E 3, Meta AI and Midjourney.
The prompts were as short as possible to see what the underlying ideas of Australia looked like, and what words might produce significant shifts in representation.
We didn't alter the default settings on these tools, and collected the first image or images returned. Some prompts were refused, producing no results. (Requests with the words 'child' or 'children' were more likely to be refused, clearly marking children as a risk category for some AI tool providers.)
Overall, we ended up with a set of about 700 images.
They produced ideals suggestive of travelling back through time to an imagined Australian past, relying on tired tropes such as red dirt, Uluru, the outback, untamed wildlife and bronzed Aussies on beaches.
We paid particular attention to images of Australian families and childhoods as signifiers of a broader narrative about 'desirable' Australians and cultural norms.
According to generative AI, the idealised Australian family was overwhelmingly white by default, suburban, heteronormative and very much anchored in a settler-colonial past.
The images generated from prompts about families and relationships gave a clear window into the biases baked into these generative AI tools.
'An Australian mother' typically resulted in white, blond women wearing neutral colours and peacefully holding babies in benign domestic settings.
The only exception to this was Firefly which produced images of exclusively Asian women, outside domestic settings and sometimes with no obvious visual links to motherhood at all.
Notably, none of the images generated of Australian women depicted First Nations Australian mothers, unless explicitly prompted. For AI, whiteness is the default for mothering in an Australian context.
Similarly, 'Australian fathers' were all white. Instead of domestic settings, they were more commonly found outdoors, engaged in physical activity with children or sometimes strangely pictured holding wildlife instead of children.
One such father was even toting an iguana – an animal not native to Australia – so we can only guess at the data responsible for this and other glaring glitches found in our image sets (the image also showed the man holding an odd tool and standing in front of a malformed horse).
Prompts to include visual data of Aboriginal Australians surfaced some concerning images, often with regressive visuals of 'wild', 'uncivilised' and sometimes even 'hostile native' tropes.
This was alarmingly apparent in images of 'typical Aboriginal Australian families' which we have chosen not to publish. Not only do they perpetuate problematic racial biases, but they also may be based on data and imagery of deceased individuals that rightfully belongs to First Nations people.
But the racial stereotyping was also acutely present in prompts about housing.
Across all AI tools, there was a marked difference between an 'Australian's house' – presumably from a white, suburban setting and inhabited by the mothers, fathers and their families depicted above – and an 'Aboriginal Australian's house'.
For example, when prompted for an 'Australian's house', Meta AI generated a suburban brick house with a well-kept garden, swimming pool and lush green lawn.
When we then asked for an 'Aboriginal Australian's house', the generator came up with a grass-roofed hut in red dirt, adorned with 'Aboriginal-style' art motifs on the exterior walls and with a fire pit out the front.
The differences between the two images are striking. They came up repeatedly across all the image generators we tested.
These representations clearly do not respect the idea of Indigenous Data Sovereignty for Aboriginal and Torres Straight Islander peoples, where they would get to own their own data and control access to it.
Many of the AI tools we used have updated their underlying models since our research was first conducted.
On 7 August, OpenAI released their most recent flagship model, GPT-5.
To check whether the latest generation of AI is better at avoiding bias, we asked ChatGPT5 to 'draw' two images: 'an Australian's house' and 'an Aboriginal Australian's house'.
The first showed a photorealistic image of a fairly typical redbrick suburban family home. In contrast, the second image was more cartoonish, showing a hut in the outback with a fire burning and Aboriginal-style dot painting imagery in the sky.
These results, generated just a couple of days ago, speak volumes.
Generative AI tools are everywhere. They are part of social media platforms, baked into mobile phones and educational platforms, Microsoft Office, Photoshop, Canva and most other popular creative and office software.
In short, they are unavoidable.
Our research shows generative AI tools will readily produce content rife with inaccurate stereotypes when asked for basic depictions of Australians.
Given how widely they are used, it's concerning that AI is producing caricatures of Australia and visualising Australians in reductive, sexist and racist ways.
Given the ways these AI tools are trained on tagged data, reducing cultures to cliches may well be a feature rather than a bug for generative AI systems.

Google agrees $36 million fine for anti-competitive deals with Australia telcos
SYDNEY, Aug 18 (Reuters) - Google agreed on Monday to pay a A$55 million ($35.8 million) fine in Australia after the consumer watchdog found it had hurt competition by paying the country's two largest telcos to pre-install its search application on Android phones, excluding rival search engines. The fine extends a bumpy period for the Alphabet-owned (GOOGL.O), opens new tab internet giant in Australia, where last week a court mostly ruled against it in a lawsuit brought by Fortnite maker Epic Games accusing Google and Apple (AAPL.O), opens new tab of preventing rival application stores in their operating systems. On anti-competitive tie-ups with Australian telcos, the country's consumer watchdog on Monday said Google struck deals with Telstra ( opens new tab and Optus, under which the tech giant shared with them advertising revenue generated from Google Search on Android devices between late 2019 and early 2021. Google admitted the arrangement had a substantial impact on competition from rival search engines, and has stopped signing similar deals while also agreeing to the fine, the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) added. "Today's outcome ... created the potential for millions of Australians to have greater search choice in the future, and for competing search providers to gain meaningful exposure to Australian consumers," ACCC Chair Gina-Cass Gottlieb said. Google and the ACCC have jointly submitted to the Federal Court that Google should pay the A$55 million fine. The court must still decide if the penalty is appropriate, the ACCC said, but the cooperation between the regulator and Google has helped avoid lengthy litigation. Barnaby Joyce's urgent warning to Australia about how the country is about to change forever
Barnaby Joyce has issued a dark warning to Aussies about how artificial intelligence will take their jobs. The Australian Services Union said on Monday it will lodge a submission with the Fair Work Commission to support working from home, where it's possible to do so. 'Working from home is now a permanent feature of the modern Australian workplace, and our submission will make it clear that the location of work does not diminish its value,' union secretary Emeline Gaske said on Monday. The union is calling for employees to be given six months' notice if the employer wants them to return to the office. But Joyce described this demand as 'an absurdity,' warning that opting to WFH would make it easier for an employer to replace you. 'You can't just say you're going to work from home today, or you won't have a job,' the Nationals MP and former Deputy Prime Minister told Sunrise. 'I think you've got to be careful. With AI coming: if your job is a keyboard, yourself, and a computer, it's not a myth: AI is coming.' He added: 'AI is going to come into the clerical work and just remove jobs left, right, and centre. 'I'd be doing everything to keep your jobs because if people can prove they don't need to come to the office, then the office can prove they can be replaced by AI.' Joyce pointed to trades work, such and electricians and plumbers. 'AI won't be able to turn itself into a plumber or itself into an electrician or a chippy, so trades are a place where you can sustain a good level of employment,' he added. Barney Glover, the JSA's commissioner, insisted that while bleak predictions of mass redundancies were overstated, every job would be affected by AI. 'The overarching message is that almost all occupations will be augmented by AI,' he said. 'It doesn't make a difference which sector you are in, or at what skill level: you will be influenced by AI.' Chris Hemsworth's Centr app shuts down Melbourne HQ and sacks 15 staff after $100m sale to Jeff Bezos's brother
Chris Hemsworth's wellness empire is slimming down after his fitness app Centr has officially closed its Melbourne headquarters, as the company shifts the bulk of its operations to the United States. The move comes just over a year after the actor, 42, sold the app for a reported $100m to HighPost Capital, a private equity firm co-founded by Mark Bezos - the brother of Amazon boss Jeff Bezos. A spokesperson for Centr confirmed that the Melbourne office will no longer operate, and only a few Australian employees will remain on board in remote roles. The spokesperson said: 'As Centr continues to scale globally, we've made the strategic decision to consolidate operations in the US to improve operational and geographic efficiency.' 'This transition affects 15 roles, with a few team members continuing remotely as part of the US–based team. Centr remains focused on continued growth across its digital platform, performance–grade equipment, and global partnerships.' Nick Robinson, Centr's digital general manager, added that the company planned to 'continue to drive towards business goals' through 'streamlining operations' and hiring top talent in the US. It's the second wave of job cuts to hit the Australian team in just over a year, after a previous round of layoffs saw around 20 roles slashed. Until recently, the Melbourne office served as Centr's hub for content creation, customer service, and sales and marketing for Australia, New Zealand, and Asia. Daily Mail understands all 23 remaining staff in the Melbourne office were summoned to a meeting and informed it would be their final day with the company. One senior creative, who is currently five months pregnant, took to LinkedIn and claimed she was given no warning before being told her role was being terminated immediately. The brutal timing of the layoffs also raised eyebrows given Chris has been spotted vacationing in Spain with wife Elsa Pataky and their children in recent weeks. It comes just a month after former Centr CEO Zsofi Paterson departed the company and announced she had taken up a new role with children's photo–sharing startup Tinybeans. Chris launched Centr in 2019, leveraging his global fame and shredded physique to attract subscribers to the platform, which offers high-intensity workouts, meal plans, meditation routines, and wellness tips. The app charges $119 annually or $20 per month and still prominently features Chris in marketing campaigns, despite his reduced involvement in the day-to-day running of the business. When it was acquired by HighPost Capital, owned by David Moross and Mark Bezos, the company moved its headquarters to Los Angeles but kept a team in Melbourne. In April 2022, Chris told his 54 million social media followers that he was 'thrilled' Centr had been acquired by Mark Bezos. At the time of the sale, a Centr representative said Chris would keep an active role in the company and that he was still a major shareholder. The company's website retains the actor's image as founder and carries his endorsement. It reads: 'As one of Hollywood's leading men, Chris is known for diverse roles that require serious physical transformations.' 'He attributes much of his success to his team of world-class experts in fitness, nutrition and wellness. With Centr, his team is now your team.'
