Fear-mongering on ethanol-blended E20 petrol baseless: Oil Ministry

Hindustan Times5 days ago
Amid the social media chatter about the impact of 20 per cent ethanol-blended E20 petrol on vehicles, the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas (MoPNG) has stated that concerns over a drastic drop in fuel efficiency are misplaced. The ministry has also added that the E20 fuel, in fact, offers improved acceleration. The ministry also said that doping petrol with 20 per cent ethanol extracted from sugarcane or maize is a national programme aimed at reducing vehicular emissions, which is being sought to be derailed by some by fomenting fear and confusion.
In its statement, the ministry has listed out the benefits of using E20 petrol and said that using such a fuel does not impact the validity of insurance of vehicles in India. "Some seek to derail it by fomenting fear and confusion in the minds of car owners by selectively picking information and creating a false narrative that insurance companies will not cover car damage due to the use of E20 fuels. This fear-mongering is totally baseless and has been clarified by an insurance company whose tweet screenshot was deliberately misinterpreted to create fear and confusion. Usage of E20 fuel has no impact on the validity of insurance of vehicles in India," the statement from the ministry said.

India transitioned to E20 fuel. What's the concern?
Over the last few days, there has been a growing chatter on social media about the impact of using E20 petrol on vehicles. Some people have been saying that using E20 petrol leads to at least a seven per cent drop in fuel efficiency. Responding to this, the ministry said that the critiques suggesting that E20 causes a drastic reduction in fuel efficiency are misplaced. However, the ministry did not state the percentage drop in fuel efficiency.
The social media posts have pointed out that the calorific value of ethanol is 29.7 as compared to 46.4 of petrol, and so the energy produced per litre is 65 per cent of petrol. Social media posts also cited the June 2021 Niti Aayog report to state that E20/E27 in E10 cars degrades the rubber and plastic components, corrodes metal, harms fuel systems, cuts mileage and may lead to the need for part upgrades.
Earlier on August 4, the ministry said in a social media post, "Ethanol, being lower in energy density than petrol, results in a marginal decrease in mileage, estimated at 1-2 per cent for four-wheelers designed for E10 and calibrated for E20, and around 3–6 per cent in others." It also said, 'The efficiency drop (if any) in E10 vehicles has been marginal. For some manufacturers, vehicles have been E20 compatible from as far back as 2009. The question of any drop in fuel efficiency in such vehicles does not arise." It also stated that vehicle mileage is influenced by a variety of factors beyond just fuel type. "These include driving habits, maintenance practices such as oil changes and air filter cleanliness, tyre pressure and alignment, and even air conditioning load," the statement said.
Further, the ministry said that concerns related to performance and mileage being raised now were anticipated as early as 2020 by the Government, and an Inter-Ministerial Committee (IMC) of the NITI Aayog examined them at length. 'The use of E20 gives better acceleration, better ride quality and most importantly, lowered carbon emissions by approximately 30 per cent as compared to E10 fuel," said the ministry, further adding that ethanol has a higher-octane number of 108.5 compared to petrol's 84.4. "Vehicles tuned for E20 deliver better acceleration, which is a very important factor in city driving conditions. Additionally, ethanol's higher heat of vaporisation reduces intake manifold temperatures, increasing air-fuel mixture density and boosting volumetric efficiency," it said.

Bajaj Auto Explains Hack To Preserve Older BS-3 Motorcycles From E20 Petrol

Pune/Delhi: The government's vision of a stepwise ramp-up of blending of ethanol in petrol was always in the public knowledge. The recent spat of social media outbursts regarding the adverse effects of blended fuel on vehicles' engines is causing a stir. Through advisories and multiple statements, the Centre has communicated that there is no dramatic change in the functioning or mileage of the blended engine in older vehicles. Deliberating on the same lines, Bajaj Auto has revealed a simple and cost-effective technique to keep BS3 and older engines fit and running smoothly. Ethanol has hygroscopic properties; thereby, it tends to absorb moisture in the air. The engine components, when exposed to moisture for a prolonged period, may cause problems with gaskets, cylinder heads, and other rubber parts. While parts used in BS6-compliant motorcycles are E20-ready, Bajaj Auto explained a way to keep BS3 and older motorcycles hassle-free. Also Read: Jawa Yezdi Roadster Vs Royal Enfield Classic 350: Specs And Price On the sidelines of the KTM 160 Duke launch, Bajaj Auto R&D experts explained, "Older motorcycles can run on E20 petrol. Due to ethanol's hygroscopic properties, there are chances of gummy formation in the engine chamber, butterfly walls, and around rubber components. Motorists can use 40 mL of fuel system cleaner in one full tank of petrol to solve this problem." According to the Bajaj Auto experts, adding a fuel system cleaner can reduce the ill effects of ethanol on the combustion chamber. Fuel system cleaner is readily available at fuel pumps and service stations, which cost around Rs 80-100 for 40 mL. Government's Stand on E20: The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas said moving to E20 fuel is part of India's commitment to meeting its climate goals and achieving net zero emissions by 2070. The use of E20 gives better acceleration, better ride quality, and most importantly, lowered carbon emissions by approximately 30% as compared to E10 fuel. Ethanol's higher-octane number (approximately 108.5 compared to petrol's 84.4) makes Ethanol-blended fuels a valuable alternative for higher-octane requirements that are crucial for modern high-compression engines. Terming claims of a drastic reduction in fuel efficiency "misplaced", the ministry said, "Vehicle mileage is influenced by a variety of factors beyond just fuel type. These include driving habits, maintenance practices such as oil changes and air filter cleanliness, tyre pressure and alignment, and even air conditioning load."

Mercedes-Benz calls for rethink of EU's 2035 ban on combustion cars

The European Union's landmark plan to phase out petrol and diesel cars by 2035 is facing fresh criticism, this time from Mercedes-Benz. The German automaker's chief executive, Ola Kallenius , has cautioned that the policy risks throwing Europe's auto industry into chaos if pursued without flexibility. At the core of Mercedes-Benz's argument is not a rejection of decarbonisation, but of deadlines. Kallenius insisted that the industry's transition must be technology neutral. In an interview with Handelsblatt, Kallenius said, 'We need to do a reality check. Otherwise, we'll be driving full speed into the wall." The concern: fixed targets, fluid reality At the core of Mercedes-Benz's argument is not a rejection of decarbonisation, but of deadlines. Kallenius insisted that the industry's transition must be technology neutral. A blanket ban, he warned, could disrupt economies, especially if consumer demand fails to align with regulatory timelines. 'An absolute target at a fixed time with draconian penalties won't help," he said. Instead, the company advocates for a market-led transition, where consumer preference, supported by incentives, shapes the pace of EV adoption. Also Read : Mercedes G-Class hits 6 lakh production mark since 1979. Check details The China comparison Kallenius pointed to China as a counter-example. Unlike Europe, Beijing has not set an end-date for combustion engines. Instead, it has pushed EV adoption through cheap charging costs and tax breaks. At the same time, hybrids and combustion models remain in the mix. The result: EV sales are surging without the regulatory cliff-edge that Europe is heading toward. Mercedes-Benz is not alone in this stance. BMW's CEO Oliver Zipse told Bloomberg last year that the 2035 target was 'no longer realistic" and could trigger a 'massive shrinking" of the industry. What the EU law says The EU mandate requires that from 2035, all new cars sold emit zero CO2. Existing cars are unaffected, and second-hand combustion vehicles can still be traded. Automakers may also continue producing combustion engines, but only if powered by carbon-neutral synthetic fuels, so-called e-fuels. The policy is central to Brussels' climate plan, which targets carbon neutrality in the transport sector by 2050. Also Read : Mercedes Benz rethinks EQS strategy, will Combine EV and ICE S-Class models: Report Local measures already in play Beyond Brussels, cities are already moving to clamp down on emissions. London's Ultra Low Emission Zone charges drivers of non-compliant vehicles £12.50 a day. Other cities, from Barcelona to Beijing, have rolled out low-emission zones to keep polluting trucks and cars out of urban cores. Between ambition and execution Europe's 2035 target is pitched as a bold step toward net-zero. But as Mercedes-Benz and others warn, ambition without flexibility could backfire. Consumers are still price-sensitive, infrastructure is uneven, and technologies like e-fuels remain expensive. For Europe's carmakers, once the envy of the world, the question is no longer whether to decarbonise, but how fast without breaking the industry in the process. E20 rollout sparks consumer concerns: Mileage dip, engine woes reported — what car owners say about use of ethanol-blended petrol

Ethanol-blended petrol worries consumers (AI-image) The nationwide rollout of 20 per cent ethanol-blended petrol (E20) has triggered a wave of questions and concerns from vehicle owners, with many claiming declining fuel efficiency, sluggish performance and higher maintenance costs. Service centres say non-E20-compliant vehicles — which still account for a majority on Indian roads — are facing engine wear and gasket failures, forcing consumers to recalibrate or replace parts. Car owners were quoted by Economic Times an their experience and opinion on government's Ethanol-based fuel. Mileage and performance hit? Rahul Vaidya, who owns a 2019 Volkswagen Vento, saw his car's mileage fall from 11–12 kmpl to 7–8 kmpl. 'The ride felt heavier, and the response wasn't as crisp,' he said, before a service centre confirmed his car wasn't E20-compliant. After replacing critical components and recalibrating the engine, performance was restored. Mahesh Nair, who drives a 2021 Suzuki Brezza, reported a similar drop of over 20 per cent in mileage, along with jerky drives and poor pick-up. His vehicle required ECU tuning and E20-compatible parts to resolve the issues. 'I had no idea my car wasn't ready for E20 in the first place,' he said. Industry executives estimate non-E20 vehicles may see fuel efficiency fall by around 7 per cent, while official studies, including those by the Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI) and the Petroleum Ministry, peg the drop at 1–6 per cent. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Why this MBA won't break the bank SRM Online Learn More Undo ARAI director Reji Mathai said field trials had shown 'no abnormalities,' though some plastics and elastomers did degrade under testing. Policy push vs consumer awareness The ethanol-blending programme is central to India's energy strategy. From April 2023, all new vehicles were required to be E20-compliant, with stricter enforcement beginning April 2025. Yet, nine out of ten cars currently on the road are only E10-ready, designed to handle a maximum of 10 per cent ethanol. Consumers, however, appear largely unaware. 'There's a glaring gap in awareness. OEMs must educate car buyers. Consumers are stakeholders too,' said Naveen Soni, former president of Lexus India. Two-wheeler maker Hero MotoCorp has issued advisories warning older vehicles may need modifications to run smoothly on E20. Some automakers have also hinted warranties may not hold for vehicles running on higher ethanol blends. Oil companies maintain additives are being introduced to limit corrosion. Brazil's decades-long experience with flex-fuel technology is often cited as a model, though experts note India's consumer transition is proving more abrupt. For the government, the programme has saved over Rs 1.44 lakh crore in foreign exchange since 2014, substituted 245 lakh metric tonnes of crude, and cut CO₂ emissions by the equivalent of planting 30 crore trees. Ethanol demand has also boosted sugarcane farmers' incomes, with payments this year alone expected to touch Rs 40,000 crore. But for vehicle owners, the immediate impact is higher fuel bills and repairs. 'E20 has a lower heat content than pure petrol, so a marginal drop in fuel efficiency is inevitable,' said IV Rao, Distinguished Fellow at TERI. 'The extent will vary by manufacturer and model, but consumers must not be left in the dark.'
