Thanks to Sneha's poem, her school in Kerala gets new building
PALAKKAD: It began with a poem penned by an eighth grader in 2021 at the height of the COVID pandemic. The verses, expressing unwavering belief in brighter days ahead – quiet reflections of a young mind – resonated far and wide, eventually finding a place in the preface of the budget speech presented by then Finance Minister T M Thomas Isaac.
On Tuesday, four years down the line, the poem by Sneha Kannan became the reason for a major development: the inauguration of the new school building of Government High School, Kuzhalmannam, proving yet again how sincere, heartfelt words can bring about real change.
The young poet had written the poem thinking it might appear in a children's magazine. To her surprise, it was chosen for the budget speech. After presenting the budget, Isaac contacted Sneha. And during their conversation, she made a request: a facelift for her school, then functioning in a run-down rented building at the time.
The response was swift. The government first allocated Rs 3 crore, then another Rs 4 crore to construct new building blocks for the school. Four years later, that vision took shape in concrete and steel. On Tuesday, at Vellappara, the new building of the school was inaugurated by Speaker A N Shamseer in the presence of Sneha.
At the ceremony, her poem echoed through the new school campus once again, this time as the welcome song. 'I'm overwhelmed that my poem helped my school get a new building.
I never imagined my words would go this far. I am thankful to my teachers and the government for acting swiftly,' said Sneha, currently awaiting her Plus Two examination results. She is the younger daughter of Kannan, a driver, and Rumadevi.
The high school section functioned in a building at the Kuzhalmannam block panchayat office complex, while the UP section operated in a rented structure at Kulavanmukku. Both sections will be shifted to the new building before the start of the new academic year.

Delhi government to waive inflated water bills, over 16 lakh customers to benefit
The Delhi government, led by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, is preparing to waive domestic water bills in the coming days. 86.5 lakh deaths in 2022, 15% dip over Covid-hit 2021: CRS data

Some of the major states namely, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka, West Bengal, Bihar and Haryana have contributed significantly to the decreased number of registered deaths," the report 5.26 lakh deaths were reported due to COVID-19 till July 26, 2022, according to a reply given by the government in the Lok Sabha on July 29, World Health Organisation had reported over 47 lakh COVID-19 linked deaths in India which was strongly disputed by the government. The Centre had said the WHO estimates suffered from "a number of inconsistencies and erroneous assumptions"."India had registered a strong objection to the process, methodology and outcome of this unscientific modelling approach especially when India had provided authentic data published through Civil Registration System by Registrar General of India to WHO," the government reply had CRS report also showed that over 2.54 crore births were registered in 2022."The number of registered births has increased from 242.0 lakh in 2021 to 254.4 lakh in 2022, an increase of about 5.1%," the report has been an increase in 2022 in registered births in almost all states and UTs, except Bihar, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Sikkim, West Bengal, Ladakh, and Lakshadweep as compared to major states namely, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Gujarat, Telangana, Chhattisgarh and Assam have contributed significantly to the increase in registered births in 2022 over 2021, the report said."On the other hand, decrease in registered births in six figures has been observed in two major states namely, West Bengal and Bihar during 2021-2022," it said.

‘We look to the future, not past': Sanjay Raut amid Sena (UBT)-MNS alliance buzz
Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut said Saturday that his party is focused on building the future, not dwelling on past differences, amid growing speculation of a possible alliance with the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS). 'Those who wish to take positive steps do not look back. We look to the future. How long are you going to dwell on the past?' Raut told reporters in Mumbai, urging MNS leaders to forget rifts in the past and look at the future of the two parties. The MP's comments come on the heels of Sena (UBT) president Uddhav Thackeray's recent admission that informal talks are underway with the Raj Thackeray-led MNS, a statement that has revived hopes of a political rapprochement nearly two decades after they split. Meanwhile, the Sena (UBT)'s mouthpiece Saamana on Saturday carried photographs of Uddhav and Raj Thackeray together on its front page—an image not seen in party media for years. This came even as posters featuring the two leaders together, calling for unity, were spotted in parts of Mumbai and Thane. Party workers from both sides are reportedly behind the campaign, urging the cousins to 'unite for the Marathi cause.' Even MNS workers are in touch with us, and there is no confusion in their minds either.' He added, '…what is in the hearts of the people of Maharashtra—that will happen.' Meanwhile, Raj Thackeray has reportedly been holding marathon meetings with party office-bearers and leaders in Mumbai amid the possible alliance with Sena (UBT).
