Eight high school takeaways from Friday as the MIAA playoffs ramp up

1. Milestones
Scituate senior
Kate Stone
notched her 150th career goal and 200th career point while recording a hat trick in a 10-8 Division 2 girls' lacrosse first-round win over Algonquin.
Methuen junior goalie
Meghan Terry
made 16 saves in a 17-9 Division 2 prelim win over Hopkinton, including the 300th of her career.
Greater Lowell senior
Emma Finch
finished her senior season with 54 goals, and she will graduate as the program's all-time leader in goals with 153.
2. Upset central
The highest-ranked teams to be eliminated Friday were Oxford softball — ranked No. 12 in Division 4, the Pirates fell, 5-4 to No. 21 Lynnfield — and Wesborough girls' lacrosse, also ranked 12th in Division 2, which lost, 8-7, to No. 21 Northampton.

Other seeds in the teens that were toppled: No. 13 Norton boys' volleyball, which fell, 3-2, to No. 20 Lynn Classical in the Division 2 first round; No. 13 Notre Dame (Worcester), which suffered an 8-6 loss to No. 20 Monty Tech in the Division 3 first round; No. 14 Sturgis East girl's tennis, which lost, 3-2, to No. 19 Palmer, and No. 15 Arlington boys' tennis, which fell, 3-2, to No. 18 Andover.
The largest upset of the day, by difference in seedings, was No. 39 Greater Lawrence softball taking down No. 26 North Reading, 7-3, in the Division 3 preliminary round.

3. Walkoff wins
Boy, were there some dramatic ones.
It doesn't get much more intense than a 0-0 game in the bottom of the seventh, but that's what No. 23 Triton faced against No. 42 Ursuline in the Division 3 softball preliminary round.
Ava Johnson
was hit by a pitch, stole two bases, and with two outs raced home on
Izze Turner's
single up the middle for a 1-0 walkoff win.
Giving that finish a run for its money, No. 31 Sturgis East softball trailed, 2-1, in the bottom of the seventh with the bases loaded when
Sam Orcutt
, who had homered earlier for the team's first run, launched a grand slam for a 5-2 walkoff win over No. 34 Mystic Valley in the preliminary round of the Division 5 tournament.
No. 25 Tantasqua baseball survived an upset bid from No. 40 Lowell Catholic when
Brandon Phillips
managed an RBI infield single in the bottom of the seventh for a 3-2 Division 3 preliminary-round win.
In the Division 3 softball tournament, No. 31 Blackstone Valley's
Julia Trujillo
tied the game with a triple in the bottom of the ninth, then came around to score the winning run on
Payton Smith's
walkoff single, completing a 3-2 preliminary-round victory.
This one wasn't technically a walk off, and maybe we need a new category for these types of games, but No. 33 Martha's Vineyard baseball won an epic 12-inning Division 3 preliminary-round matchup, 4-3, over No. 32 Ashland on
Eli Bryant's
sacrifice fly in the top of the 12th.
4. Three stars
Mackenzy Ponte
, Westport — The senior, in her sixth year on varsity and fifth as the Wildcats' starter, struck out 10 in a five-inning no-hitter to beat English High, 23-0, in the Division 5 preliminary round.

Dakota Vaudreuil
, Bartlett — The senior struck out 17 in a five inning no-hitter to defeat Kennedy Academy, 24-0 in the preliminary round of the Division 5 softball tournament.
Bella Mara
, St. Paul — The senior did it all, striking out eight without allowing a run and going 3 for 3 with a double and two home runs in a 10-3 first-round win for the No. 7 Knights.
5. Going, going gone
We mentioned Mara's two home runs for St. Paul, and Orcutt's walkoff grand slam for Sturgis East, but there was plenty of notable power displays across the Bay State.

8. Coaching carousel
Mike Scammon
has doubled his duties at North Andover, where he will take over as the girls' volleyball coach in the fall. Scammon has served as the Scarlet Knights' boys' volleyball coach for the past five seasons, winning a Merrimack Valley Conference title in 2021, when he was named MVC Coach of the Year. The Methuen native and teacher at Methuen High also serves as the program director for the New England Storm volleyball club.

Holliday and Mateo homer as Orioles defeat White Sox 4-2 to clinch series win

BALTIMORE -- Jackson Holliday hit his first career leadoff home run, Jorge Mateo slugged his first homer of the season and the Baltimore Orioles defeated the Chicago White Sox 4-2 on Saturday. Dean Kremer (5-5) allowed one run in six innings to win his second consecutive start for Baltimore, which has won five of seven for the first time this season. The Orioles clinched their third home series victory of the season and their first since taking two of three from the New York Yankees on April 28-30. Félix Bautista earned his 10th save in 11 tries with a scoreless ninth. The White Sox (18-40) fell to 6-25 on the road and are a season-high 22 games under .500. After yielding Holliday's home run in the first, Chicago starter Davis Martin (2-6) didn't allow a hit until Ryan O'Hearn's one-double in the fourth. O'Hearn came around two batters later on Coby Mayo's RBI single — his first in the majors. And it cleared both benches. Mayo, who was called up earlier Saturday, rounded first base and got caught in a rundown. Second baseman Lenyn Sosa tossed to first baseman Miguel Vargas and Mayo collided with Sosa — appearing to try to draw an interference call — and fell as he was heading to second. Vargas tagged Mayo out, but Sosa took exception to Mayo's shove. The two were talking when Mayo picked up his helmet from the ground and then pushed Sosa in the left shoulder as he was walking away. That sent players from both teams onto the field, where there was a little pushing and shoving before order was quickly restored without incident. In the fifth, Mateo followed Dylan Carlson's one-out double by lofting a fly over the fence in center for his first homer since last June 21. Andrew Benintendi hit an RBI single in the fifth off Kremer and Mike Tauchman drove in the White Sox's other run with a single off Yennier Cano in the seventh. Kremer allowed six hits and struck out seven. He improved to 2-0 with a 1.02 ERA in three career starts against the White Sox. Martin gave up four runs in six innings. He struck out six. Bautista struck out Luis Robert Jr. and Austin Slater to escape a two-on, one-out jam in the ninth. Bautista earned saves on consecutive days for the first time since July 22-23, 2023. The right-hander missed all of last season after undergoing Tommy John surgery in October 2023. Chicago RHP Adrian Houser (1-0, 0.00 ERA), who has thrown 12 scoreless innings since signing with the White Sox on May 20, starts the series finale against Baltimore RHP Charlie Morton (1-7, 7.09).

White hits 3 of Arizona's program-record 8 HRs in 14-4 win over Utah Valley

EUGENE, Ore. -- Mason White hit three of Arizona's program-record eight home runs and the No. 2 seed Wildcats beat fourth-seeded Utah Valley 14-4 on Saturday night at the Eugene Regional. Arizona (41-18) can clinch a berth in the super regionals with a win Sunday against the winner of an elimination game between Utah Valley, which beat host and No. 12 national seed Oregon 6-5 on Friday and No. 3 seed Cal Poly — which eliminated the Ducks with a 10-8 win earlier Saturday. Both the Wolverines and the Mustangs would have to beat the Arizona twice to win the double-elimination regional. Tommy Splaine, Brendan Summerhill, Garen Caulfield, Aaron Walton and Adonys Guzman also hit home runs for the Wildcats. Casey Hintz (7-4) pitched three no-hit innings of relief and Michael Hilker Jr. allowed a hit with seven strikeouts over three scoreless innings for his first save of the season. Starter Raul Garayzar lasted just three innings and gave up four runs, three earned. White hit a two-run home run off starter Colton Kennedy (5-5) in the first inning and the Wildcats never trailed. Mason Strong and Dominic Longo II each hit and RBI single in the first, and CJ Colyer and DJ Massey had run-scoring groundouts in the fourth for Utah Valley (33-28).

Blake Cyr drives in 4 runs, Aidan King sharp on the mound and Florida routs Fairfield 17-2

CONWAY, S.C. -- Blake Cyr drove in four runs, Aidan King allowed one run in eight innings, and Florida stayed alive in the Conway Regional with a 17-2 rout of Fairfield on Saturday. The Gators got a solo home run from Cyr, a two-run shot from Bobby Boser and a two-run homer from Brody Donay on the way to a 7-1 lead through seven innings. Cyr had an RBI single in the fifth and a two-run single in the eighth. Florida blew it open with an eight-run eighth inning in which the Gators had only three hits. Fairfield pitchers issued five bases on balls, two of them with the bases loaded, and hit a batter. There was one error in the inning. King (7-2) allowed four hits and struck out seven in his eight innings. He walked two batters. Felix Ong pitched the ninth for Florida and gave up the final run on a sacrifice fly. Fairfield's Matt Bucciero hit a home run in the fourth inning. Bowen Baker (8-2) took the loss. Florida (39-21) advances to Sunday's elimination game against the loser of Saturday's semifinal between Coastal Carolina and East Carolina. Fairfield (39-19) was making its third NCAA Tournament appearance and fell to 2-6 in those games.
