Ranganathan critical after son's school placing
The comedian Romesh Ranganathan has hit out at West Sussex County Council after his youngest son did not get offered any of his preferred choices in his secondary school placement.
Mr Ranganathan said he had emailed the council six times after his son was placed in a school "on the other side of town", and not at the same school as his elder brother.
He said he had not had a response from the council so he had contacted his local MP, who told him they would look into it, but he was told "they can't do anything about it".
A council spokesperson said: "We don't comment on individual matters, but we acknowledge the disappointment when students cannot be placed at their first choice."
Mr Ranganathan, who hosts A League of Their Own and a Saturday morning show on BBC Radio 2, said he was particularly angry as his elder son was already at the school the family had selected as his youngest son's first choice.
Taking to social media, he said: "It's more than disappointing."
He said he had emailed the council six times but had had no response.
On taking his case to his MP, Mr Ranganathan said: "I wait two week, they come back and say 'West Sussex has looked into it. They can't do anything. They have conducted an investigation into their placement procedure and found it satisfactory'."
"I bet they have," Mr Ranganathan said.
"It's not the football, it's my son's school placement.
"We have to go on the waiting list and see what happens."
The council spokesperson said: "We will always work with families to ensure a suitable school placement can be found."
On Wednesday, the council said 91.1% had been offered their first preference school and 98.6% of all applicants were offered a place at one of their three preferences.

Trump administration orders US embassies to stop student visa interviews
The Trump administration has ordered US embassies worldwide to immediately stop scheduling visa interviews for foreign students as it prepares to implement comprehensive social media screening for all international applicants. A Tuesday state department cable obtained by the Guardian instructs consular sections to pause adding 'any additional student or exchange visitor (F, M, and J) visa appointment capacity until further guidance is issued' within days. The directive, first reported by Politico , could severely delay visa processing and hurt universities – many of which Donald Trump accuses of having far-left ideologies – that rely heavily on foreign students for revenue. 'The department is conducting a review of existing operations and processes for screening and vetting of student and exchange visitor visa applicants,' the cable reads. Officials plan to issue guidance on 'expanded social media vetting for all such applicants'. The freeze is a further escalation from current screening measures, which have primarily targeted students who participated in pro-Palestinian campus protests. Since March, consular officers have been required to conduct mandatory social media reviews looking for evidence of support for 'terrorist activity or a terrorist organization' which could be as broad as showing support for the Palestinian cause, according to a cable obtained by the Guardian at the time. That directive required officers to take screenshots of 'potentially derogatory' content for permanent records, even if posts were later deleted. The new expansion would apply social media vetting to all student visa applicants, not just those flagged for activism. Under the screening process, consular officers would examine applicants' posts, shares, and comments across platforms such as Instagram, X and TikTok for content they deem to be threatening to national security, which has since been tied in to the Trump administration's stance on combating antisemitism. Rubio told senators last week that his department has revoked visas numbering 'probably in the thousands at this point', up from more than 300 reported in March. 'I don't know the latest count, but we probably have more to do,' he said. There are more than one million foreign students in the US, contributing nearly $43.8bn to the economy and supporting more than 378,000 jobs in 2023 to 2024, according to NAFSA. The visa freeze threatens to compound existing challenges facing higher education institutions already experiencing declining international enrollment. When reached for comment, a state department spokesperson said that 'every visa adjudication is a national security decision', noting that visitors applying for visas were required to provide social media identifiers since 2019. 'The Trump administration is focused on protecting our nation and our citizens by upholding the highest standards of national security and public safety through our visa process,' the spokesperson said in an emailed statement.

Reports of a large presence of US Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers at locations in Cathedral City and Palm Springs circulated online Friday along with videos and images that appear to show the agency's officers and their vehicles. ICE had not responded to a request from The Desert Sun for information about the nature of the observed activity as of late Friday afternoon. Luz Gallegos, executive director of TODEC, an organization that advocates for the rights of immigrants, said volunteers had observed activity in the area. They said the operation appeared to have been targeted toward someone in particular and not a mass immigration sweep. But the organization is still waiting on additional information to confirm, she added. Rep. Raul Ruiz, a Democrat who represents parts of the Coachella Valley, said in a statement Friday afternoon that he has "formally requested more information from ICE regarding the raid by masked agents in unmarked vehicles in Cathedral City.' Ruiz added that he was 'actively monitoring the situation and following reports.' Local anxiety and concern was stoked as immigration sweeps were reported across Los Angeles Friday. President Donald Trump has proclaimed that his administration would focus on deporting those in the country illegally. Adam Schiff and Alex Padilla and two U.S. congressmembers from the state released a statement on Friday calling for an internal ICE investigation into a recent raid in San Diego that reportedly saw 20 ICE agents detain four employees of two restaurants in the city. The senators said the agents wore "military-style gear" and raided the restaurants during peak dining hours, detonating flash-bang grenades and instilling widespread fear and panic across the restaurants and the broader San Diego community. The lawmakers called the raid "disturbing" raid and said it reflects a pattern of 'theatrical' immigration enforcement stunts under the Trump Administration They urged ICE's Office of Professional Responsibility to investigate the agents' use of force, tactical decisions, compliance with legal protocols, and coordination with local officials, as well as the operation's impact on local communities and businesses. They also requested information on how the raid aligns with ICE's current immigration enforcement priorities and what guidance agents had received regarding enforcement in civilian or public-facing settings. Padilla released another statement Friday condemning what he called "a series of sudden immigration raids" that occurred Friday across Los Angeles. 'The ICE raids across Los Angeles today are a continuation of a disturbing pattern of extreme and cruel immigration enforcement operations across the country," the statement read. "These indiscriminate raids prove once again that the Trump administration cares about nothing but instilling harm and fear in our communities to drive immigrants into the shadows. It will not work. This fearmongering is not going to change the fact that immigrants are valued members of our communities who contribute to our society and economy, and my office will demand accountability for today's actions.'
