Rizwan backs Pakistan bowlers to bounce back in ODI series decider
The West Indies romped to a series-levelling five-wicket victory over visitors Pakistan in the rain-hit second ODI here at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy in Trinidad and Tobago on Monday (IST).
Batting first, Pakistan posted 171/7 in 37 overs on the back of valuable thirties from Hasan Nawaz and Hussain Talat in a stop-start innings with rain intervals in between. In response, the West Indies were set a target of 181 off 35 overs based on Duckworth-Lewis-Stern (DLS) method, which they chased down with 10 balls to spare as player of the match Roston Chase and Justin Greaves put on an unbeaten 77-run stand off 72 balls.
Chase and Greaves took a particular liking to Pakistan's part-timers of Saim Ayub and Salman Agha, with the pair each conceding 33 runs from their spell as the West Indies squared the series at 1-1 ahead of the final match at the same ground on Tuesday.
While Rizwan wouldn't confirm the duo will retain their place in Pakistan's side for the series decider, he backed them to perform well should they win selection for the eagerly-awaited contest.
'You could say our fifth bowler gave away too many runs (today), but in recent years, Salman Agha and Saim Ayub have both bowled well for us. Saim didn't have the best day today, but he performed well in the T20Is. That's just part of the game.
'Honestly, the weather forecast has been completely different from expectations, and it's hard to read. We're keeping our options open and will finalise the XI (for the series decider) after assessing the conditions,' Rizwan was quoted by the ICC.
The victory for the West Indies was their first over Pakistan in more than six years, with their most previous win against the Asian side prior to this match coming at the 2019 edition of the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup when they cruised to a seven-wicket triumph in Nottingham.
'We wanted to come back from the loss, we wanted to get better and happy with the win today. He's a class act, he's doing some great things on the ODi format, growing from strength to strength. It was a bit tough to bat on, it was a lot slower but great to see the guys in the middle overs come in and great to see the guys get over the line. Sherfane gave us that impetus and then Chase and Greaves sealed the win for us,' Windies skipper Shai Hope said.
West Indies, who missed qualification for the 50-over World Cup in India in 2023 and are chasing a return to the major tournament in 2027.

Pakistan slump to 92 all out as West Indies win ODI series
An inspired Jayden Seales led the West Indies to a crushing 202-run victory over Pakistan in the third and deciding one-day international in Trinidad on Tuesday. The fast bowler blew away the Pakistan top order en route to figures of 6-18 as the tourists were bundled out for just 92 in a chase of 295 to win. The Windies had reached 294-6 in their 50 overs batting first, powered by captain Shai Hope's brilliant unbeaten hundred. The Caribbean side sealed a much-needed first ODI series win against Pakistan since 1991, after being swept aside 3-0 and 5-0 in Test and T20 series respectively by Australia earlier in the summer. "We stress on negatives a lot in West Indies," said Hope. "So many positives to shout about. Great to see the guys pulling off history. "Seales is a quality bowler... He's a class act. Anything you ask him to do, he puts his hands up." Pakistan's reply got off to a horrendous start as Seales removed Saim Ayub, Abdullah Shafique and Mohammad Rizwan inside the first three overs to reduce them to 8-3. Seales then trapped Babar Azam lbw for just nine to leave Pakistan's hopes of a 2-1 series win in tatters. "Seales made it difficult for us. Done so throughout the series. But we lost three early wickets, that's what cost us," said Pakistan skipper Rizwan. Left-arm spinner Gudakesh Motie took two wickets through the middle overs, before Seales returned to remove tailenders Hasan Ali and Naseem Shah and complete a six-fer. The hosts, who lost the opening game of the series, wrapped up the win when Pakistan number 11 Abrar Ahmed was run out by Roston Chase. Pakistan had started strongly with the ball after winning the toss and electing to field, as the West Indies struggled to find the boundary. The home side were 68-3 when Keacy Carty was dismissed lbw by Abrar for a 45-ball 17. The usually big-hitting Sherfane Rutherford also never got going and crawled to 15 from 40 deliveries before falling to Ayub. But Chase helped revive the innings with a quickfire 36, giving Hope some much-needed assistance. Chase was bowled by Naseem and Motie was caught and bowled by Mohammad Nawaz as the West Indies' batting effort threatened to peter out. But Hope and Justin Greaves plundered 110 runs from the final 8.1 overs in a blistering assault to get their team close to 300. Hope finished on 120 not out, with 10 fours and five sixes, completing his 18th one-day international century. He now sits behind only Brian Lara and Chris Gayle on the all-time list for most ODI tons for the Windies. Greaves more than played his part, clubbing an unbeaten 43 from just 24 balls.

India captain Shubman Gill and England batter Sophia Dunkley have been declared the ICC men's and women's Players of the Month, respectively, for July 2025 following an elaborate process that included votes from an esteemed selection panel as well as those of fans worldwide. Gill became the first male player to win the Player of the Month award four times after a stupendous run in England saw him score 567 runs at an average of 94.50 in the three Tests played in July. His previous ICC Player of the Month awards were in January 2023, September 2023 and February 2025. Two women players – Ash Gardner and Hayley Matthews – have won the award four times each. The highlight for Gill during this period was his aggregate of 430 runs in the second Test in Birmingham, the second highest ever in a Test match. His scores of 269 and 161 in that Test helped level the series 1-1 and he also chipped in with a useful 103 in the second innings of the fourth Test in Manchester that helped draw the match and keep the series alive. The Indian skipper, who won the award ahead of his England counterpart Ben Stokes and South Africa all-rounder Wiaan Mulder, said he was hoping to continue his good form in the season ahead. UAE approves national team's schedule ahead of World Cup 2026
The UAE Football Association has approved the national team's schedule for September as they prepare for two Asian play-off matches for the 2026 World Cup. The play-offs will take place from October 8 to 14, with the national team facing Oman and Qatar at the Jassim bin Hamad Stadium in Doha, Qatar. The national team will also be holding a training camp in Dubai from August 25 to September 9, where they will play two friendly matches, the first against Syria on September 4, and the second against Bahrain on September 8. The matches will both be held at Zabeel Stadium in Al Wasl Club. Matar Al Sahbani, a leading member of the national team's administrative management, confirmed that the upcoming training camp will be more beneficial, following the success of the first training camp in Austria last month. He added that the local competitions will begin soon, and the players will play official matches with their clubs, which will aim to enhance their technical and physical readiness. He also stressed the technical staff's keenness to monitor the performance of all players, including those who missed the Austria camp due to injury. Al Sahbani explained that the selection of the Syrian and Bahraini teams for the upcoming friendly matches is due to the proximity to the level of the competitors in the Asian play-off.
