No friction between BJP, RSS: Ram Madhav praises PM's Independence Day address; reiterates ideological unity

The Hindu14 hours ago
RSS leader Ram Madhav has categorically asserted that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) are part of the same ideological family, and there is no friction between the two, as both organisations work in their respective fields of politics and social service.
The senior RSS leader also praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi for recognising the 100-year history of the RSS during his Independence Day speech.
When asked about certain doubts over possible 'friction' between the two organisations in an interview with ANI, Mr. Madhav dismissed any such speculation and reiterated that the two organisations are united in regards to ideology and working for the development of the country, with BJP working in politics, and RSS working outside it for social service to the nation.
'These atkale (speculations) are always put from time to time. If they don't find any issue then RSS is brought forward and said that there is friction between RSS and BJP. RSS and BJP are two organisations joined together under the same ideological umbrella,' Mr. Madhav, former National General Secretary of BJP told said in New Delhi.
The RSS leader's remarks come amid Congress and other opposition parties criticising PM Modi for his address for mentioning the 100-year-old Sangh. Congress leaders have called the mention of the organisation an 'insult to the Constitution and tricolour.'
There has also been speculation on a tense relation between the Sangh and the BJP with political opponents alluding to it.
'BJP works with a political angle, and RSS works outside politics, does multiple types of service for the development of the country. We are of the same ideological family so we keep in touch, and in that there have never been any tensions. There is no tension,' Mr. Madhav added.
Mr. Madhav further reiterated that people from all sorts of diverse political backgrounds are welcome in the organisation, including the Congress. He however, criticised the act of opposing the RSS for 'political gains.'
'Some people, due to political reasons, have always opposed RSS, for example some Congress leaders. They opposed for political reasons but ultimately everyone knew inside them that RSS is works for the Hindu religion and the country while being away from politics. The organisation is doing the work of making good people, man-making, that everyone knows. In our lower levels of organisation, everyone from diverse backgrounds gets a chance to work,' he said.
'When I say that from all political backgrounds get a chance, that means Congress is also included in it, but some people feel that if they oppose RSS then they will benefit politically,' he added.
He further mentioned how the Sangh works for building good people, doing 'man-making' in the organisation.
The RSS leader also praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Independence Day address, saying that the speech sent a 'very good message across the country and RSS workers.'
'With Prime Minister mentioning RSS on its 100-year anniversary, and also appreciating the work done by the organisation for the nation, and also saying that the swayamsevak be an inspiration for all, these things have been appreciated by the people of RSS after hearing them. But there are crores of other people in the country, who are not perhaps part of the organisation and watch it from outside and understand the work done, those people are also appreciated this (PM's remarks),' he added.
In his Independence Day speech, PM Modi praised RSS for completing 100 years of service to the nation, describing it as the 'biggest NGO in the world' and praising its century-long contribution to nation-building.
'Today, I would like to proudly mention that 100 years ago, an organisation was born - Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). 100 years of service to the nation is a proud, golden chapter. With the resolve of 'vyakti nirman se rashtra nirman', with the aim of welfare of Maa Bharati, swayamsevaks dedicated their lives to the welfare of our motherland...In a way, RSS is the biggest NGO of the world. It has a history of 100 years of dedication,' PM Modi said.

Election Commission hits back at parties amid row over deletions from draft rolls

The Election Commission of India accused opposition parties on Saturday of raising electoral roll concerns at the wrong time, and scheduled a press conference for Sunday that will coincide with Congress launching a statewide yatra on in poll-bound Bihar The commission is scheduled to address a briefing at 3pm on Sunday The commission is scheduled to address a briefing at 3pm on Sunday, as Congress leader Rahul Gandhi begins a 16-day 'Voter Adhikar Yatra' in Bihar against what the opposition party says is alleged voter fraud via the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) that has led to 6.5 million people being excluded from the state's electoral rolls. 'It seems that some political parties and their Booth Level Agents (BLAs) did not examine the electoral rolls at the appropriate time and did not point out errors, if any, to SDMs/EROs, DEOs or CEOs,' the commission said in a statement on Saturday, referring to a process that occurs yearly. The poll body said parties are now raising concerns outside the designated process. 'Recently, some political parties and individuals are raising issues about errors in electoral rolls, including the electoral rolls prepared in the past,' it said. The commission said there was a proper procedure for addressing electoral roll concerns. 'The appropriate time to raise any issue with the electoral rolls would have been during the claims and objections period of that phase, which is precisely the objective behind sharing the electoral rolls with all political parties and the candidates,' it stated. 'Had these issues been raised at the right time through the right channels, it would have enabled the concerned SDM/EROs to correct the mistakes, if genuine, before those elections,' the commission added. Typically, every year, electoral rolls undergo summary revision with a qualifying date of January 1, when citizens turning 18 become eligible voters. During this process, draft rolls are published, followed by a claims and objections period lasting several weeks where political parties and voters can challenge inclusions or exclusions. The final rolls are then published by January 31, giving parties multiple opportunities annually to scrutinise and correct electoral data through established legal channels. It is likely these draft rolls that the EC was referring to, but did not specify in its statement on Saturday. The poll body will hold a press conference on Sunday featuring Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and both Election Commissioners, though officials have not specified the subject. People aware of the details said the commission will discuss 'recent issues and allegations' regarding the Bihar verification drive. Officials aware of the matter told HT that the presser is a response to the Opposition's concerns on SIR especially the Congress's. Gandhi has alleged 'vote chori (vote theft)' in Maharashtra, Karnataka and Haryana, accusing the poll panel of voter data manipulation. On August 7, he claimed there were 100,250 'stolen' votes in Bangalore Central's Mahadevapura assembly segment that helped the BJP win the 2024 Lok Sabha seat, accusing the commission of 'colluding' with the ruling party. The presentation prompted an immediate reaction from the commission, which asked Gandhi to send a signed declaration and oath supporting his allegations. Commission officials have since urged Gandhi to either sign the oath or 'apologise' to the nation. The commission said it welcomes scrutiny. 'ECI continues to welcome the scrutiny of Electoral Rolls by Political Parties and any Elector. It will help SDMs/EROs to remove the errors and purify the Electoral Rolls which has always been the objective of ECI,' it stated.

SAD rebel faction seeks reopening of Kartarpur Corridor

1 2 Amritsar: On the occasion of India's 79th Independence Day, Harpreet Singh, president of the reorganised Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), invoked the painful legacy of Partition, calling it a "religious injustice" that continues to haunt Sikhs. Addressing a gathering, Harpreet Singh said Punjab and Bengal bore the brunt of India's freedom struggle, only to be brutally divided in 1947. "While Delhi celebrated, Punjab burned. The British departure unleashed a wave of hatred that claimed nearly a million lives. Children were butchered, and elders and women, unable to bear the horror, took their own lives," he said. He lamented that Sikhs were forced to abandon their sacred gurdwaras in Pakistan and resettle in Punjab in India. "We left behind our soul," he said, referring to revered shrines such as Sri Nankana Sahib, Gurdwara Panja Sahib, Kartarpur Sahib, Dera Sahib in Lahore, and Sacha Sauda. "Even today, Sikhs cannot freely visit these sites. The Kartarpur Corridor gave us hope, but it too became a victim of politics and diplomatic tensions. " Drawing a comparison, Harpreet Singh said, "Muslims can go for Hajj without visa denials or border restrictions. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like This Could Be the Best Time to Trade Gold in 5 Years IC Markets Learn More Undo But a Sikh must beg for a visa to bow before Guru Nanak Dev Ji's birthplace. This is religious injustice on a global scale." He also spoke of elderly Sikhs who died with unfulfilled dreams of revisiting their childhood homes across the border, and similarly, elders in Pakistan who longed to return to ancestral villages in India. "Those responsible for this pain will never find peace—not even after death. The souls of the 10 lakh martyrs will not rest until justice is done," he said. Appeal to reopen Kartarpur Corridor ahead of Jyoti Jot Diwas In a related statement, officiating Akal Takht Jathedar Giani Kuldip Singh Gargaj urged the central government to reopen the Kartarpur Corridor ahead of Guru Nanak Dev Ji's Jyoti Jot Diwas. He recalled the horrors of 1947, when Punjab witnessed massacres and displacement. "Sikhs on the western side of Punjab lost their fertile lands and over 200 sacred gurdwaras, including Sri Nankana Sahib. This grief is embedded in our daily prayers," he said. The corridor, opened during the 550th Prakash Gurpurb of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, had enabled emotional reunions at Kartarpur Sahib. However, recent Indo-Pak tensions led to its closure. "With Jyoti Jot Diwas approaching, reopening the corridor would allow the sangat to pay homage at this sacred site. We urge the government to act swiftly," he said. HC to check AAP plea on Kejriwal's house on Aug 25

New Delhi: Delhi High Court has said it will examine on Aug 25 the plea of Aam Aadmi Party seeking allotment of a residential accommodation to its national convener and former chief minister, Arvind Kejriwal, in the national capital. Justice Sachin Datta adjourned the matter for a detailed hearing on the plea, which seeks directions to the central govt to allot accommodation to Kejriwal. The petition contends that under the guidelines for the allotment of accommodation from the general pool to political parties, the president of a recognised national party was entitled to one govt residence in Delhi, provided they neither own a house nor were allotted one in any other official capacity. "All pre-conditions are met. There is a national convener, who is also the national president. We are requesting a centrally located residence," senior advocate Rahul Mehra, representing AAP, submitted earlier. A previous bench granted the party office space when it lacked one, and the current request was for residential accommodation, he added. The petition notes Kejriwal vacated his official residence at 6 Flagstaff Road on Oct 4 after stepping down as chief minister. Since then, he has been staying at the official residence of another party member near Mandi House, it added. According to the guidelines, recognised national parties are allowed to secure the allotment of one housing unit from the general pool in Delhi for their office use on the payment of a licence fee. The guidelines also state that one residential accommodation would be allotted to the president of a recognised national party in case he has no house in Delhi, either of his own or allotted by the govt in any other capacity. Last year, AAP was allocated a new office at Pandit Ravi Shankar Shukla Lane in Lutyens' Delhi after it approached the high court, which ruled that the party was entitled to a space for its office here like other national parties and asked the BJP-led Centre to take a decision on the issue.
