County executive says Browns dome plan ‘won't pan out,' but Jimmy Haslam disagrees
CLEVELAND (WJW) – While Cleveland Browns leaders stress they are focusing all their efforts on plans to build an enclosed stadium in Brook Park, Cuyahoga County Executive Chris Ronanye still is holding out hope the team will have a change of heart.
Ronanye spoke to the FOX 8 I-Team Friday and said he also believes the enclosed stadium project will not be successful. He said he will not support it, even though it is planned to be built in Cuyahoga County.
He believes the Browns should continue to play games in downtown Cleveland. He said moving the team to Brook Park will hurt downtown businesses.
'We don't see necessarily this deal is going to pan out,' Ronayne said. 'So if you claim it is the next big investment, we don't buy it. We want them to come home.'
Bold renovation plans revealed for Cleveland's West Side Market
This week, Browns owner Jimmy Haslam spoke exclusively to the I-Team. He and a top executive revealed they are no longer talking about plans to renovate the existing stadium on the lakefront. Instead, team officials are focusing completely on building a dome in Brook Park with development around it.
The Browns are promising to invest more than $1 billion and are asking the state and county for $600 million each in bond money to be paid back with profits from the project. State officials are still discussing the funding proposal and are expected to have a decision by the end of June.
Ronayne still says no.
'We've said, 'not with our support,'' Ronayne said. 'We've said, 'if you're going to Brook Park, you're doing it with other sources of support.''
While the Cuyahoga County executive thinks county money to help with the enclosed stadium project is a risk for taxpayers, Haslam disagrees.'This project in total, if you count the real estate, would be north of $3 billion,' Haslam said. 'That'll be the fourth or fifth largest project ever done in Ohio period.'
Two Jefferson Area elementary schools closed due to rash outbreak
The mayor's office issued the following statement:
'We will continue to pursue our legal strategy and remain confident that the Modell Law applies to HSG's attempt to move the Browns out of Cleveland.'
Haslam, however, is not looking back.
'We want this project to succeed,' Haslam said. 'We want a can-do type environment. Yes, we can do that.'

Odell Beckham Jr. Opens Up About Giants
Odell Beckham Jr. Opens Up About Giants originally appeared on Athlon Sports. There may be no bigger 'what if' in New York Giants history than the trade of receiver Odell Beckham Jr. Dealt to the Cleveland Browns for a first- and third-round pick in the 2019 NFL Draft, along with safety Jabrill Peppers, Beckham's departure broke the hearts of a fanbase. He was the team's best player and an elite offensive weapon. He was a cultural icon and, seemingly, made for the market he dominated. Advertisement And then he was shipped to Cleveland by (then) general manager Dave Gettleman for reasons that fans would still challenge. In the years since the trade, it has grown increasingly difficult to say New York came out on the losing end. With that first-round pick, Gettleman drafted defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence, who's now one of the top defensive players in the sport. Beckham, meanwhile, has posted just one 1,000-yard season since leaving New York. He hasn't come particularly close since doing so in 2019. Even so, the feeling that things could have been different in East Rutherford has lingered well past Gettleman's tenure. On 'Beckham and Friends Live,' the receiver shared an emotional confession about the Giants. "I never, ever wanted to leave the New York Giants," Beckham said. "The reason you heard me talking about what was going on was because I was pissed because, where I come from in college, if we lost one game, our season was over. Advertisement "This was the organization I got drafted to. They believed in me. So if the Giants went and won a Super Bowl, I would be happy. But deep down inside, I wanted to be the one. No question. So it's definitely you'll always hold that. But then someone like me, I went to the LA Rams, won a Super Bowl. But still, you just want that." Maybe Beckham would have done enough to elevate Daniel Jones, who the team drafted at No. 6, just 11 picks before Lawrence. Perhaps he would have been more productive without the chemistry- and scheme-based issues that plagued his Browns tenure. The fact that the New York faithful didn't get to see it will continue to haunt the organization. Beckham, having won with the Rams, fell short with the Baltimore Ravens, and was forgotten with the Miami Dolphins. His career may very well be over. The Giants will hope history doesn't repeat itself with the LSU standout following in his footsteps. Shedeur Sanders Sounds Off on Browns QB Competition Amid Rumors He Could be Cut
Shedeur Sanders Sounds Off on Browns QB Competition Amid Rumors He Could be Cut originally appeared on Athlon Sports. There are more eyes on Cleveland Browns rookie quarterback Shedeur Sanders than any other player at the team's organized team activities (OTAs). Advertisement Sanders has been all over social media following his historic slide during the 2025 NFL draft, in which he was projected by many analysts to go in the first round but fell all the way to the fifth before being grabbed by the Browns with the 144th overall pick. The 23-year-old signal-caller is locked into a heated battle in a loaded QB room with Super Bowl champion Joe Flacco, former first-round pick Kenny Pickett and fellow rookie Dillon Gabriel, who was drafted two rounds before Sanders. Some believe Sanders if fourth on the depth chart just a few weeks away from training camp, and ESPN's Daniel Oyefusi recently stated the former Colorado QB is at risk of being cut during camp. And while Sanders will likely be the most-talked about storyline for the rest of the Browns' offseason, he recently opened up about how he feels competing with three other passers for the starting job on his YouTube channel. Advertisement 'It's lit,' Sanders said. 'Quarterback room is fun. Every day is fun going in there. Everything is real good, I'm happy. We got a bunch of different personalities in the quarterback room, and just talking to the quarterbacks that took NFL snaps, that played in the league, you're living the experience through them also and ask them whatever questions come to mind.' Some believe Sanders is a longshot to make the Browns' roster considering teams rarely carry four QBs on their regular-season roster. Browns insider Mary Kay Cabot of wrote earlier this month that Pickett is actually believed to be the leader in the clubhouse to be the team's QB1. 'It's a tough call before we've even seen the first practice of organized team activities, but I know Kenny Pickett heads in as the frontrunner to win the starting job at the outset,' Cabot wrote. 'He'll take the initial first-team reps in OTAs and probably the mandatory minicamp, and it seems like it's his job to try to keep for now.' Insider Suggests Commanders Could Sign Nick Chubb
Insider Suggests Commanders Could Sign Nick Chubb originally appeared on Athlon Sports. In 2023, running back Austin Ekeler was among the biggest villains of the fantasy football world. As he dealt with an ankle injury, his efficiency dipped to a meager 3.5 yards per carry as his production fell off a cliff. Advertisement A season later, Ekeler's production continued to decline. But in a new role, with redefined expectations, his reputation improved. On a resurgent Washington Commanders team, he wasn't alone in that regard. Now, Washington is attempting to get quarterback Jayden Daniels over the hump. It has brought in established veterans who are proven quantities, on and off the field. Could another veteran running back be next? ESPN insider Jeremy Fowler suggested that the Commanders could sign former All-Pro running back Nick Chubb. 'I know he [Nick Chubb] expects to play,' Fowler said for ESPN Cleveland. 'The running back market is tough. A lot of these guys are waiting, I think probably up until training camp at this point. I do not expect Chubb back with the Browns barring some sort of surprise or injury. Advertisement 'There are some teams out there that could be in the market for one. You know, the Commanders or the Bears come to mind. They could be looking for an extra back at some point. Right now he's in that mode where you just survey the landscape, see what develops, and keep working out to play next year.' Like Ekeler a year ago, Chubb is coming off a concerning season as it pertains to both his production and injury history. After recovering from a second catastrophic knee injury, Chubb ran for 3.3 yards per attempt—nearly two yards below his career average of 5.1. His toe injury ended his season and cast further doubt upon his NFL future. Advertisement As far as bounce-back candidates go, Chubb's case can't be considered strong. Age-30 seasons don't bring good news for most backs, much less those with Chubb's baggage. However, the Commanders could bring in Chubb with the intention of handing him a small-time role behind Brian Robinson Jr., especially with the allure of a deep playoff run. Perhaps more playing time or guaranteed money would appeal to Chubb more. As his market continues to shrink, though, Washington shouldn't be ignored as a landing spot.
