Religious hatred on social media: Pakistan govt decides to launch crackdown
The decision was taken during a high-level security meeting chaired by Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi. The meeting resolved to take firm action against those misusing digital platforms to incite religious intolerance and directed the formulation of clear recommendations for the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) to curb hate content on both social and electronic media.
'No one will be allowed to incite violence or disturb public order,' a senior official said after the meeting. 'Strict enforcement of the Muharram code of conduct will be ensured.'
An official statement issued by the Ministry of Interior regarding a meeting on the nationwide Muharram security plan, reviewed security strategy for Muharram, for all provinces, Azad Jammu and Kashmir, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Islamabad.
It was decided that any suspension of mobile or internet services during sensitive days will be made in consultation with provincial authorities, based on ground realities and security assessments.
The meeting decided that all necessary measures will be taken to ensure peace and order during Muharram. It was also agreed that any decision to suspend internet or mobile phone services will be made in consultation with relevant provinces, keeping in view the security concerns, it says.
The Interior Minister directed authorities that decisions regarding internet and mobile service suspensions must be made on the basis of ground realities and the security situation.
He emphasised that all necessary measures and decisions will be taken through mutual consultation. The federal government will extend full support to all provinces, Azad Kashmir, G-B for maintaining law and order, he said, adding that modern technology will be used to monitor processions and gatherings.
The Inspector General of Police (IGPs) and home secretaries of Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Sindh, Balochistan, Azad Kashmir, G-B, and Islamabad attended the meeting and briefed the Interior Minister on their respective security plans for Muharram.
The meeting was also attended by Minister of State for Interior Tallal Chaudhry, Secretary Ministry Interior, Acting Chairman Capital Development Authority (CDA), Commandant Frontier Constabulary (FC), Deputy Commissioner (DC) Islamabad, DIG Islamabad Police, senior officials of the Ministry of Interior, and law enforcement agencies.

Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi on Sunday praised Pakistan's intelligence agencies for their critical role during the recent conflict with India, claiming they had early access to enemy plans and even obtained video footage of six Indian aircraft being shot down. The recent confrontation between the two neighbouring countries, triggered by the Pahalgam attack, marked one of the most serious escalations in decades, pushing the nuclear-armed rivals to the brink of full-scale war. The conflict resulted in civilian casualties on both sides before diplomatic efforts managed to defuse tensions. During the exchange, the Pakistan Air Force shot down six Indian aircraft, including a French-made Rafale fighter jet. A senior French intelligence official later confirmed the loss of at least one Rafale—marking the aircraft's first known combat downing. The minister revealed that intelligence agencies received detailed information about India's plans well in advance, including sensitive intelligence and operational documents. 'We used to have every single detail of India's decisions and papers in advance. Later, when their aircraft were shot down, it was decided that until we had evidence, we would not announce how many planes had been downed. We needed field proof—and believe me, within minutes, the evidence was with us. We have videos of six Indian aircraft that were shot down.' Naqvi attributed part of Pakistan's success during the conflict to divine intervention. 'India fired seven missiles at one of our major bases, which contained valuable assets. Everyone was worried, but not a single missile landed inside the base—some fell before reaching, some outside, and some to the side,' he recounted. He added that when Pakistan retaliated, its missiles struck an Indian oil storage depot without causing civilian casualties. 'This was purely Allah's help,' he said. He also praised Pakistan's military leadership, particularly Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir. Naqvi recalled a meeting with a visiting Saudi delegation that included military and government officials. The Field Marshal, he said, told them, 'India is like a shining Mercedes, but we are like a dumper truck loaded with stones. Now imagine what happens when the two collide.' Highlighting the unique unity within Pakistan's leadership, Naqvi said, 'For the first time in Pakistan's history, the Army, Air Force, and Navy devised a joint strategy and fought the war under one plan.' He contrasted this with India's fractured command structure, where military chiefs reportedly operated independently. Payments made to cover Naqvi's expenses: Rs4.17m malfeasance uncovered in PCB
ISLAMABAD: Irregularities worth Rs4.17 million have been detected in the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), where unauthorised payments were made to cover the utility bills, fuel, and accommodation expenses of its Chairman, Mohsin Naqvi, despite his concurrent role as Federal Minister for Interior. According to the Audit Report 2024-25, the PCB spent Rs2.45 million on utility bills for Naqvi's Lahore residence, Rs1.16 million on fuel for an official Toyota Fortuner, and Rs0.56 million on accommodation at a five-star hotel in Islamabad between February and June 2024. The report held that these expenses were unauthorised, as the Chairman, being a federal minister, was already entitled to such privileges under the Federal Ministers and Ministers of State (Salaries, Allowances and Privileges) Act, 1975. Naqvi all set to become PCB chairman today Auditors rejected the PCB's defence that the payments were permissible under its bye-laws, stressing that no individual can claim the same facilities from two different sources. The Departmental Accounts Committee (DAC), in its January 2025 meeting, directed recovery of the accommodation charges and sought clarification on the remaining expenses. The report has recommended full recovery of the irregular payments and submission of verified records for audit examination. The revelations come at a time when PCB is already under heightened scrutiny over the financial management of PSL 9, raising further concerns about governance and accountability within the country's premier cricketing body. Photo: APP Pakistan and the United States on Friday agreed to make exchange of information more effective in the fields of counterterrorism and counter-narcotics in yet another sign of deepening security cooperation between the two sides. The development came during a meeting between Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi and US Coordinator for Counterterrorism Gregory LoGerfo at the Ministry of Interior. Minister of State for Interior Tallal Chaudhry, Acting US Ambassador Natalie Baker and Federal Interior Secretary were also present on the occasion. An official handout issued here by the Interior Ministry said during the meeting, both sides agreed to further enhance Pakistan-US relations especially in the areas of counterterrorism, border security, and anti-narcotics. They also agreed to make the exchange of information more effective in the fields of counterterrorism and counter-narcotics. Naqvi said that since President Donald Trump's administration came into power, the Pakistan-US relations have improved significantly. He commended President Trump's sincere efforts for global peace and noted that transparency, mutual trust, and cooperation are the hallmarks of the bilateral relationship. He emphasized that this is an excellent opportunity to further strengthen bilateral relations in all areas. The interior minister added that counterterrorism dialogue will help in creating a joint strategy. He termed the US decision to designate the banned BLA and banned Majeed Brigade foreign terrorist organisations a commendable step, expressing hope that Pakistan-US cooperation will yield positive results in eliminating terrorism. Gregory LoGerfo acknowledged Pakistan's geo-strategic importance. He also expressed condolences over the loss of lives in terrorist attacks. The meeting came against the backdrop of recent a move by the US to designate BLA and Majeed Brigade as Foreign Terrorist Organisation (FTO). The move was a major diplomatic win for Pakistan. Earlier this week, Pakistan and the United States pledged to deepen counterterrorism cooperation, with a renewed focus on tackling terrorist groups including the BLA, ISIS-Khorasan and the TTP. But what was significant in the joint statement issued after the latest round of counterterrorism dialogue held in Islamabad was that it was for the first time the US agreed to work together with Pakistan to tackle groups such as the outlawed BLA. The two countries regularly hold counterterrorism dialogue but never before the joint statement made mention of terrorist groups such as the BLA.
