Kerala: NHAI terminates site engineer after collapse of RE wall, embankment at NH-66
A port of the embankment and RE Wall was reported on Ramanattukara-Valanchery Section of NH-66 in Kerala on May 19, 2025, when the project was nearing completion, read a statement from the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways on May 22. While no deaths occurred due to the collapse of the embankment, multiple cars were stuck at the section.
On May 19, a team of four experts was constituted to study the reasons for failed Kooriyad RE wall including testing under the supervision of a Retired IIT-Delhi Professor GV Rao. The preliminary assessment by the team suggested that the failure is due to inability of the foundation soils to support the high embankment loads.
On May 24, an additional expert committee was constituted, comprising of a retired senior Central Road Research Institute (CRRI) scientist, an Associate Professor from IIT-Palakkad and the Deputy Director General from the Geological Survey of India (GSI). The committee is tasked with assessing other potential location of reinforced soil (RS) walls and slope protection works in 17 ongoing projects on NH-66 in Kerala.
NHAI also levied a monetary penalty of Rs 20 lakh on Thursday against the Design Consultant, Strata Geosystems, and debarred them for one year. The Highway Authority has also served a show cause notice to Sri Infotech, which was the safety consultant of the project, while also issuing a penalty of Rs 20 lakh.
On May 21, NHAI had suspended the Concessionaire, KNR Constructions Ltd from participating in ongoing/future bidding. Project consultant/independent engineer, Highway Engineering Consultant has also been disallowed from participating in future and ongoing bids.
The Project Manager of Concessionaire and Team Leader of Consultant have also been suspended from their duties, according to the ministry.
The Concessionaire is also required to clear the debris from the RE wall collapse and rectify the damage by constructing a new flyover at their cost, with the cost being approximately Rs 80 crore. (ANI)

Belgium meets EU target for winter with gas reserves
Brussels [Belgium], August 17 (ANI/WAM): The Belgian gas supply is currently 92.1% full. Brussels, along with Portugal, has already met the European target for the upcoming winter, according to figures from the Aggregated Gas Storage Inventory (AGSI).Database on the Gas Infrastructure Europe website showed that the Belgian gas network operator Fluxys has filled the underground gas storage in Loenhout with 7.745 terawatt-hours (TWh) of natural gas. The storage is thus 92.1% full. Only Portugal performs better, with a fully filled gas reserve. For the entire EU, the gas reserves are, according to the figures from Tuesday morning at 6 AM, 72.3% full; this amounts to 820.48 EU countries do have a larger storage capacity than Belgium, so it takes longer to fill them. Germany has the largest storage capacity, with nearly 250 TWh. There, the reserves are currently 65% full. Italy (83.6%), the Netherlands (60.8%), France (80.8%), and Austria (77.4%) also have significant storage 2022, EU member states must fill their gas reserves to at least 90% by November 1 each year. This obligation was meant to ensure that they had sufficient buffers after the Russian invasion of Ukraine triggered supply issues. Gas storage facilities cover about 30% of consumption in winter. TN coconut farmers say companies and traders have formed syndicate to drive down prices
COIMBATORE: Coconut farmers, who benefited from a sharp rise in prices over the past few months, have now run into a setback. They allege that a group of major companies involved in the coconut oil trade, along with local traders, have formed a syndicate to deliberately drive down procurement prices. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now K Jothimani, a coconut farmer at Subbegoundanputhur in Anamalai taluk, said the farm-gate price of coconuts, which was around Rs 70 per kg on Aug 10, dropped to Rs 58 within a few days and increased to Rs 66 on Sunday. 'It is like gambling. In villages, small farmers with three to 10 acres sell their coconuts to local traders, who in turn supply them to bigger traders. We were forced to sell at lower prices because big traders in Kangeyam, backed by corporate companies, dictate the market,' he alleged. He added that corporates use coconuts for multiple purposes, including soap manufacturing, edible oil production and domestic consumption. 'In Kashmir, coconuts are also used in dried form, like chips,' he said. With the festival approaching in , the demand for coconut oil has surged. "The Kerala govt is planning to distribute two kilograms of coconut oil to each household under its ration scheme, requiring nearly two crore litres of oil in bulk. Since Kerala does not have sufficient copra to meet this demand, traders are procuring coconuts from at lower prices. By suddenly taking control of the market, they are pushing down prices here,' said a farmer in Pollachi.
