Not Winning 2011 World Cup! Gary Kirsten Reveals His Biggest Challenge As India's Coach
Kirsten served as the head coach of the Indian men's cricket team from March 2008 to April 2011. Former South African top-order batter Gary Kirsten served as the head coach of the Indian men's cricket team from March 2008 to April 2011. During his three-year stint, he helped the Indian team become the world No. 1 Test team in the world and also helped the Men in Blue end the 28-year-long wait of becoming ODI World Cup champions. During his role as head coach of the Indian team, Kirsten made India a force to reckon with in men's cricket. He also faced multiple challenges as head coach of the Indian team because of it being one of the most high-profile jobs in cricket, but he managed to get success in the majority of them, if not all. On Wednesday, during an event organised by Yugen Infra in New Delhi, Kirsten was asked to reveal his biggest challenge as head coach of the Indian team, and when everyone expected it to be ending India's ODI World Cup wait of 28 years, Kirsten stunned them by saying that it was getting Ishant Sharma to bat in the nets and getting him to face 48 balls in a Test match to help India win. 'The biggest challenge was getting Ishant Sharma to come down to the nets with his bat and pads and then to get him to face 48 balls in a Test match against England with VVS Laxman to win the Test match. That was a highlight for me to work on his batting. I really enjoyed that from a leadership perspective because he didn't think he could bat, and he still can't bat that well. But we kind of helped him get through that Test match and do really well in it," Kirsten said. The match Kristen talked about was played between India and Australia at PCA Stadium in Mohali from October 1 to 5 in 2010. In that match, the Australian team posted a target of 216 runs for India to chase down in the fourth innings. The Indian team was struggling at 124/8 when VVS Laxman (73 not out from 79 balls) joined hands with Ishant Sharma (31 runs from 92 balls) and added 79 runs for the ninth wicket to take India closer to the win. Asia Cup 2025: India's match list, date and time, live streaming details
After two consecutive ICC trophy wins and a brilliant outing in Tests in England, the Men in Blue are ready to take up another big challenge in the form of the Asia Cup 2025, starting September 9 in the UAE. Though India was originally scheduled to host the event, it will now be played in the UAE and Dubai to ensure the smooth running of the tournament, as per ACC chief Mohsin Naqvi. The tournament will be played in the T20 format instead of the ODI format used during the last edition of the tournament. India, which will start the tournament as the defending champions, will be playing the first big event since the retirement of Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja, as all the pressure will be on the shoulders of the young Indian brigade featuring Abhishek Sharma, Tilak Varma and Sanju Samson, and will be led by Suryakumar Yadav. However, the participation of the Indian skipper is still uncertain due to a hernia surgery earlier this year. He returned to action late last month at the NCA in Bengaluru but is yet to be deemed match-fit by the BCCI. Additionally, it has also been reported that ace Indian pacer Jasprit Bumrah will miss the event due to injury. However, both these questions can only be answered once India announces its official squad for the competition. India drafted in Group A India has been drafted in Group A alongside Pakistan, Oman and the UAE, and will start its campaign against the UAE on Wednesday, September 10, before facing arch-rivals Pakistan on September 14.
