Hanwha Life bolsters support for HLE ahead of 2025 LCK

Korea Herald01-04-2025

Hanwha Life is stepping up its backing for Hanwha Life Esports as the team gears up for the 2025 League of Legends Champions Korea season, which kicks off Wednesday.
Last year marked a major milestone in the company's esports push, with HLE clinching the LCK summer championship, one of the most coveted titles of the esports scene.
Building on that success, Hanwha Life has enhanced player accommodations, offering each member a private room instead of the previous two-per-room setup. The team bus— which serves not only as transport but also as a dedicated recovery space during competitions and a symbol of the HLE brand — has also been upgraded.
Last year's LCK victory was the culmination of nearly seven years of dedication to esports for Hanwha Life, securing HLE's first championship since its founding in 2018.
The insurer had been the first financial firm to establish its own esports team. At the time, Hanwha Life emphasized its commitment to esports, explaining its decision to build a team rather than simply sponsor one. The move was unexpected, as the local esports scene was struggling with waning popularity, and many companies were pulling back their support.
For Hanwha Life, esports presented a strategic opportunity to connect with younger generations — those in their teens to 30s — who are generally less interested in life insurance, particularly amid declining demand for traditional life and savings insurance products.
The esports initiative is also part of Hanwha Life's broader strategy to promote its global business, particularly in Southeast Asian markets, where esports is thriving, driven by a young, digitally savvy population. Chief Global Officer Kim Dong-won has led this initiative to bolster the company's regional presence and engage with potential young customers.
The company operates in markets such as China and Indonesia, with a particularly strong foothold in Vietnam, where it marked its first cumulative profit in 15 years of operations in 2024.
As HLE's popularity grows internationally, Hanwha Life is seeing the benefits. A fan event in Vietnam last July saw 10 times the number of applicants for the 1,500 available spots, reflecting the team's strong following. According to the company, 30 percent of attendees discovered Hanwha Life through the esports team.
Hanwha Life has announced plans to hold another fan meeting this year.
HLE has already had a strong start to 2025. Ahead of the upcoming LCK championship, the team claimed the inaugural 2025 LCK Cup title in February and triumphed at the 2025 First Stand Tournament, securing its first global victory.
At a recent media day for the 2025 LCK, HLE was named the strongest championship contender by rival teams, underscoring the industry's high expectations for the squad.
This year, Hanwha Life has adopted the slogan "Great Challengers" for HLE.
'HLE's journey mirrors Hanwha Life's venture into new challenges beyond traditional insurance, such as global expansion and leadership in financial artificial intelligence,' the company said. 'As great challengers, we look forward to HLE and Hanwha Life pursuing their challenges this year.'

VINEXPO ASIA 2025 OFFERS CLARITY FOR ASEAN TRADE IN SHIFTING LANDSCAPE

SINGAPORE, June 3, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- In a shifting global landscape, clarity matters. From 27 to 29 May, Vinexpo Asia 2025 gathered 8,998 trade participants at Marina Bay Sands, reinforcing its position as both a business catalyst and a strategic forum for market orientation and collective foresight. The opening ceremony, attended by Singapore's Minister of State (MOS) for Foreign Affairs and Trade & Industry, Gan Siow Huang, and 15 ambassadors, set the tone for an event anchored in economic diplomacy. In her keynote address, MOS Gan underlined Singapore's commitment to " working with like-minded partners around the world" to " uphold free and open trade" — a message that echoes across the exhibition hall. " The wine and spirits industry is at a global turning point," says Rodolphe Lameyse, CEO of Vinexposium. " With so many uncertainties reshaping global trade, Southeast Asia emerges as a new consumption continent. This is no time for solo moves — it's about playing as a team. And Vinexpo Asia offers precisely the field for that. Our responsibility is clear: bring structure, perspective, and clarity." Vinexpo Asia 2025 underscored Southeast Asia's strengthening position as a dynamic and collective force in the global wine and spirits trade. From Thailand to Vietnam, Malaysia to Indonesia and the Philippines, the ASEAN bloc demonstrated a shared momentum driven by demographic growth and economic ambition. The presence of ambassadors and institutional representatives throughout the show further reinforced the regional cohesion and international relevance of the event. As MOS Gan noted in her address, the region is " home to over 600 million people and a young, rising middle class, and is expected to become the world's fourth-largest economy by 2030." She also highlighted that " alcohol beverage revenue in Southeast Asia is projected to grow by about 10% from 2023 to 2027". This confirms the region's shift from emerging to essential. As a regional trade hub, Singapore provides an ideal environment to gather Southeast Asian buying power in one place. With 4,253 meetings scheduled, Vinexpo Asia confirmed its role as an engine for qualified business encounters. The 2025 edition stood out for the intensity and quality of exchanges facilitated by Vinexposium's business matching platform — a tool widely praised by exhibitors for its efficiency. Buyers came from over 60 countries, with a particularly strong showing from Southeast Asia. Local professionals from Singapore were joined by decision-makers from Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia and the Philippines — underscoring the region's centrality to the show. " It's always very exciting to be at Vinexpo Asia, it's an annual activity for us. We meet our partners and explore new brands to introduce in Malaysia. Being here speeds up the process," says Wilson Khor, Marketing Brand Manager at Luen Heng F&B. Among the exhibitors, national and regional pavilions from France, Italy, China, the USA and Australia drew sustained attention. For many, the show delivered concrete commercial outcomes. " Vinexpo Asia 2025 has proven to be an exceptional platform for Italian wines. The quality of the crowd—comprised of highly knowledgeable buyers, distributors, and industry leaders, was truly impressive,", affirms Giorgio Calveri, Director of the Italian Trade Agency (ITA) in Singapore. " We met the Asian importers we work with and confirmed some orders. We also met potential distributors from Malaysia and Cambodia, which are countries we are not represented in," explains Vivien Gay, Director of International Sales at Silver Oak Winery (United States). Beyond the show floor, Singapore's vibrant gastronomic scene provided an ideal backdrop for after-hours networking, a natural extension of Vinexpo Asia's blend of business, intelligence and hospitality. GUIDING THE TRADE THROUGH COMPLEXITY That same spirit of openness and dialogue continued at Vinexpo Academy — the event's strategic compass, where over 30 conferences and masterclasses addressed the forces transforming the industry, from shifting consumption patterns to emerging distribution models and new regional players. " Vinexpo Academy is the number one reason I attend Vinexposium events," shares Nimmi Malhotra, Wine Communicator. " Vinexpo Asia is a world-class ideas forum — a space for thought leadership and intellectual growth." The second issue of Voice of the Industry, Vinexposium's editorial publication, was launched onsite with a sharp focus on Asia. Distributed throughout the show, it provided expert analysis, data-driven foresight, and field-based observations. Meanwhile, four episodes of the Voice by Vinexposium podcast were recorded live in Singapore, covering key themes such as the reinvention of Southeast Asia's distribution models, the rise of premium spirits, and how identity and collectability are redefining brand strategies. Episodes will be released post-event. " In a world of shifting alliances and uncertain flows, Vinexposium stands as a trusted third party for the global drinks trade — a beacon where producers, buyers, and policymakers can connect, exchange, and build long-term strategies," concludes Rodolphe Lameyse, CEO of Vinexposium." And following our DNA, w e do business with taste, heart and soul," he adds. This strategic momentum continues in 2026, as Vinexpo Asia returns to Hong Kong from 26 to 28 May, at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Center (HKCEC). Alternating between Singapore and Hong Kong, the event ensures a consistent presence across two distinct ecosystems, ASEAN and Greater China — each with its own dynamics and opportunities. Kospi reclaims 2,700 intraday amid preelection momentum

South Korean stocks held firm Monday as anticipation of Tuesday's presidential election helped extend recent gains, with the benchmark Kospi reclaiming the 2,700 level during intraday trading on the final session before a new administration takes office. The Kospi opened strong at 2,709.92, nearly 10 points above Friday's close, and climbed to an early high of 2,719.87 within the first 20 minutes. The index remained above 2,700 through the morning before paring gains to end slightly higher at 2,698.97. While slightly weaker than last week's momentum, Monday's performance marked a continuation of the recent rally. The Kospi had broken above 2,700 last Wednesday for the first time in nine months, after months of trading between 2,400 and the mid-2,600s and stalling near 2,600 in May. Institutional investors weighed on the market, emerging as net sellers of roughly 241.5 billion won ($175.8 million). Foreign investors flipped the Kospi into positive territory late in the session, ramping up purchases to end as the day's biggest buyers with a net 125.1 billion won. Retail investors also helped support the index, adding 99 billion won in net purchases. The secondary Kosdaq showed a contrasting trend, climbing around 0.8 percent to close at 740.29. Unlike the Kospi, retail investors turned net sellers, offloading roughly 120 billion won, while foreign and institutional investors stepped in as net buyers, purchasing 111.7 billion won and 14.3 billion won, respectively. 'With the Kospi awaiting the outcome of Tuesday's presidential election, the market is heading into the holiday without a clear directional catalyst,' said Lee Jae-won, analyst at Shinhan Securities. Sector performance was mixed, with no clear trend across industries. Chipmakers such as Samsung Electronics and SK hynix posted modest gains, while Hyundai Heavy Industries and Hanwha Aerospace also stood out among heavyweight advancers. In contrast, financial stocks, which had rallied last week, surrendered part of their recent gains. Meanwhile, the Korean won weakened about 0.7 percent to trade near 1,374 won per US dollar as of 4 p.m. Monday.

Embattled food tycoon posts videos of store owners, as he tries to power through disputes

Paik Jong-won's company launches 'support committee' set to provide aid for store owners hurt by recent controversies Facing numerous controversies over quality control at his food company, food franchise entrepreneur Paik Jong-won recently put store owners in his culinary empire at the forefront by posting their videos and vowing to give them more input on company policies. Paik's official YouTube channel on Friday posted multiple short videos of store owners of Paik's franchises, introducing their respective restaurants. The videos did not carry any messages or appear to have alternate motives on surface, but was contrast sharply with the rest of the videos on the channel that heavily feature Paik himself. The videos were widely interpreted as an attempt to restore faith in Paik and his company TheBorn Korea, which recently faced an array of controversies and police investigations for issues ranging from alleged false advertisements to hygiene issues wtih ingredients. As of Sunday, police are investigating 14 cases related to Paik. Paik, whose booming business is largely attributed to his fame as TV celebrity, vowed on May 6 to cease all TV appearances to focus on changes within his company. He also stressed that the store owners under his franchises have been suffering from the recent situation, vowing for his company to spend 30 billion-won ($21.67 million) in subsidizing them. The plan included a company-subsidized sale across franchise stores affiliated with TheBorn Korea. Paik himself told reporters that he will pursue stern legal actions against attempts to distort his image, which he said can be traced to a few people online. The recent videos of the store owners on YouTube had their comment sections closed, with a warning that slander and groundless speculation against them could be subject to punishment. TheBorn Korea, at which Paik is the CEO, said Sunday it is pushing ahead with the plan to launch a committee that will function as communication channel between the company leadership, outside experts, and representatives of store owners. The committee will be where each party will be able to discuss the plans for Paik's franchise stores. According to the company, it has been hosting regular meetings between Paik and store owners since Paik announced the large-scale subsidy plan. The operation of the committee will be fully funded by Paik personally.
