Barring several contract extensions, the Denver Broncos' impressive defensive line rotation could look very different in 2026.
It's no surprise that Denver used a third-round pick to select Sai'vion Jones in this year's NFL draft because three of the team's defensive linemen are scheduled to become free agents in 2026. The Broncos would probably like to bring them all back, but the salary cap might make that impractical.
Denver's two starting defensive ends -- Zach Allen and John Franklin-Myers -- are both set to hit free agency in 2026, as is key rotational lineman Malcolm Roach.
Allen is probably the team's first priority for a contract extension, but if he gets $25 million per season, it might be hard to also bring back JFM. Roach could be easier to retain because his market rate is lower.
If the Broncos end up letting JFM walk next year, Jones could be an ideal candidate to replace him in the starting lineup. And if Denver somehow manages to bring everyone back, defensive coordinator Vance Joseph will be overjoyed to retain an extremely deep rotation. Across 75 available regular season bouts, Westbrook averaged 13.3 points on a .449/.323/.661 slash line, 6.1 assists, 4.9 rebounds and 1.4 swipes. In reduced playing time, those numbers shrank a bit during the postseason. He averaged 11.7 points on inefficient shooting splits of .391/.317/.700, along with 3.7 rebounds, 2.6 assists (against 2.3 turnovers), and 0.9 steals. The biggest issues with Westbrook are his inclination to hold the ball for too long (especially on a team with elite creators like three-time MVP center Nikola Jokic and guard Jamal Murray), his inconsistent off-ball effort, his poor jump-shooting, and his disengaged defense. He may have some value as an eighth man, especially in the regular season, but giving him significant playoff minutes at this stage is risky. The Nuggets are understandably desperate to help Jokic win his second title with the franchise after two disappointing second round playoff exits. A division that has been dominated by one team, the AFC West, may be the most competitive division in the NFL this season. The Kansas City Chiefs have won the AFC West since 2016 and dominated the division for the last decade. This seems like it will possibly come to an end, as all the other teams have finally made pushes to be able to contend. Advertisement The Los Angeles Chargers made it to the playoffs last season and have looked like they are moving in the right direction with their second-year head coach, Jim Harbaugh. They also have had one of the most talented QBs in the league in Justin Herbert, and they have worked the past few seasons to get him weapons like Ladd McConkey, Omarion Hampton, Mike Williams, and Tre Harris. With a full year under Harbaugh down, this seems like the best Chargers team since Philip Rivers was the quarterback. They have also done a good job of beefing up Herbert's protection and solidifying the defense. The Chiefs are 8-2 against the Chargers in their last ten games, but the Chargers are in a great position to start to turn that around. What will most likely be the worst team in the division may be better than people think. The Las Vegas Raiders have been making a lot of moves this offseason that already have them looking twice as good as last year on paper. They brought in Super Bowl-winning head coach Pete Carroll, and he has brought in a lot of talent. The Raiders traded for Geno Smith, whom Carroll coached in Seattle. They also drafted star running back Ashton Jeanty and wide receiver Jack Bech in the draft. This is to go along with Jakobi Meyers, who may be the most underrated receiver in the NFL, and Brock Bowers, who was one of the best offensive rookies in the league last year. Advertisement Defensively, they still have Maxx Crosby and Christian Wilkins, and they brought in players like safety Jeremy Chinn and Devin White during the offseason. The Raiders, who are normally immediately counted out of the division, have a new life with their new head coach, quarterback, and playmakers. The Chargers and Raiders have a good chance of being able to compete with the Chiefs, but the team that has the best chance of being a threat to the Chiefs in the AFC West is the team that came in third last year. They went into the offseason needing some weapons and some playmakers on the defensive side of the ball, and that is exactly what they did. Offensively, the Broncos drafted RJ Harvey to be the team's new starting running back, drafted Pat Bryant, and signed Trent Sherfield Sr. to give Nix some receiving help. They also brought in Evan Engram to give Nix and Payton the tight end production that they were missing last season. Defensively, the Broncos spent their first-round pick on bringing in Jahdae Barron, they signed Dre Greenlaw and Talanoa Hufanga, they re-signed DJ Jones, and they drafted Sai'vion Jones. These new additions, paired with playmakers they already have like Pat Surtain, Zach Allen, and Brandon Jones, are going to make an already good Broncos defense great. The Broncos went 3-3 in their division last season, splitting with the Chiefs and beating the Raiders twice. This season, they need to continue to give the Chiefs problems, dominate the Raiders, and they need to bounce back from getting swept by the Chargers last season. This is easier said than done, but with the young talent and the direction the Broncos seem to be moving, they should be predicted to be at least the second-best team in their division. The Washington Commanders, who surprisingly made it to the NFC Championship last year, seem to be having some troubles before the year even starts. Star wide receiver Terry McLaurin has stated that he is unhappy about not yet receiving an extension, and he has yet to attend Commanders' minicamp. He was a big part of the team's success last year, but Washington seems to have some doubts about giving the 29-year-old receiver another extension. Advertisement The Commanders already got Deebo Samuel for almost nothing, and with a deep receiver room already, Washington could look to move off of him for some help on the other side of the ball. The Commanders drafted Jaylin Lane from Virginia Tech, signed Michael Gallup and K.J. Osborn, and they have a lot of faith in Luke McCaffrey going into his second year. The Denver Broncos need a star wide receiver for Bo Nix to throw to, and if the Commanders can not work out a deal with McLaurin, then he would be the perfect fit in Denver. McLaurin can make plays down the field, he has elite adjustment ability to make athletic catches, and is a reliable target. The trade would be Courtland Sutton, Alex Singleton, and John Franklin-Myers for Terry McLaurin and a fifth-round pick. The Commanders would get defensive line help and linebacker help while also getting a 1,000-yard receiver to replace McLaurin. Sutton could be a useful number two behind Samuel, and he would also be the only tall jump ball receiver that the team has been missing. The Commanders giving up McLaurin is not ideal, but getting that kind of return would make it worth it. They would get two defensive starters and a really good wide receiver. The Commanders let up 55 points in the NFC Championship to the Philadelphia Eagles last season and need as many defensive talents as they can. Alex Singleton was really good in his first two years in Denver, but he only played in three games last season, and the Broncos proved they can still have an elite defense without him. Singleton is 31 years old, coming off a torn ACL, so now is the perfect time to give him up. Advertisement Franklin-Myers was another productive player for Denver, but he was not good enough to be untouchable in a trade for McLaurin, and it would give Broncos rookie Sai'vion Jones to get thrown in the fire his rookie season. This could give Jones early experience and let the Broncos see if he shows any signs of being a star in this league. Sutton would get replaced by McLaurin, who is the same age but overall just a better receiver. McLaurin has been a 1,000-yard receiver in five of his six seasons; the only season where he did not reach this mark was his rookie year, where he had 919 yards in 14 games. McLaurin has been extremely consistent throughout his career and had one of his best seasons ever last year. He had 82 catches for 1,096 yards and 13 touchdowns, and 14 catches for 227 yards and three touchdowns in the playoffs. He could be vital to the growth of Bo Nix and be the playmaker the Broncos are missing. The Broncos recently signed J.K. Dobbins, drafted RJ Harvey, and signed Evan Engram during the offseason. The only offensive skill position they are missing a game changer at is wide receiver. The Commanders still have time to offer McLaurin an extension that both sides can agree on, but with his frustration growing, the two sides could end up in a stalemate. In that case, the Broncos need to make a deal for McLaurin as soon as possible.
