Cops arrest 2 men over ‘flogging' of PM effigy at rally
PETALING JAYA : Police have arrested two men, aged 21 and 47, for allegedly 'flogging' an effigy resembling Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim during the Turun Anwar rally last Saturday.
Inspector-General of Police Khalid Ismail said the suspects are being investigated for sedition.
They are also being probed for improper use of network facilities, and for using indecent, threatening, abusive or insulting words or behaviour that could lead to a breach of the peace
Khalid said police seized devices that were used to upload their video, which had gone viral.
'We will apply for the two men to be remanded,' he added in a statement.
Earlier today, acting Kuala Lumpur police chief Usuf Jan Mohamad said police had launched an investigation into the incident, which allegedly took place near Masjid Negara.
Police said that some 18,000 protesters took part in Saturday's rally calling for Anwar to step down over the rising cost of living, among others.
The rally-goers had gathered at various locations in the capital before marching to Dataran Merdeka.

(AP pic) PETALING JAYA : Malaysia is currently reviewing a United Nations joint declaration to urge Hamas to disarm and relinquish its governance over Gaza, says government spokesman Fahmi Fadzil. Fahmi said the Cabinet had been briefed by foreign minister Mohamad Hasan on the matter following a recent UN high-level conference coordinated by Saudi Arabia and France, Bernama reported. 'Our permanent representative to the UN was asked to review and sign a joint declaration, but the government decided that more time is needed to study it. 'At this point, Malaysia's stance on Palestine has not changed. Our stance is clear. Palestine has the right to exist as a state. On Wednesday, Canada became the third G7 developed nation to announce recognition of Palestine as an independent state as part of a negotiated two-state solution. Britain and France have also announced they would recognise Palestine in September at the UN General Assembly. Fahmi said that Wisma Putra has been given time to review the declaration in full, and the Cabinet has also requested Mohamad to brief the Dewan Rakyat early next week to provide further clarity on the matter. 'That will likely take place between Monday and Wednesday. I believe the minister will provide a more detailed explanation then, but the government's stance remains unchanged,' he said. The UN joint declaration, urging Hamas to disarm and relinquish its governance over Gaza, was signed by 17 countries, including Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, the United Kingdom, France, and Canada. The joint declaration, issued after a UN high-level conference, condemned the Hamas attack on Israel in October 2023, and called for the immediate release of all remaining hostages. It also urged Hamas to hand over its weapons to the Palestinian authority as part of a two-state solution framework.

Cross-border trade to thrive after high-level consultation
IT took bilateral summitry at the highest level to revive cross-border free-trade arrangement at the Tebedu-Entikong border crossing between Sarawak and West Kalimantan in Indonesia. This deal was one of the highlights of the 13th Malaysia-Indonesia Annual Consultation meeting between Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto in Jakarta this week. Also present were Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Openg and Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Mohd Noor. Sarawak had long sought to revive the free flow of goods since Indonesia unilaterally stopped it in 2016. Sarawak set up an inland port early in 2010 because it seemed to make good economic sense to transport goods from Kuching Port to West Kalimantan via the Tebedu inland port rather than all the way from Java. At its height in 2013, some RM700 million in goods were reported to be traded this way. Numerous Sarawak missions to Indonesia seeking to reinstate the free-trade arrangement since then had been fruitless. It, of course, hardly needs stressing that free trade benefits all who engage in it. It also makes geographic sense for transshipment of goods to and from West Kalimantan via Tebedu and Kuching. Naturally, it also needs to be acknowledged that West Kalimantan has similar aspirations to become a trade transshipment hub with the commissioning of a new deep sea port near Pontianak, the provincial capital. The new port will also be well-served by land adjoining it, which has been earmarked for the development of industries. It so happened that a trade delegation from Sarawak led by Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan was in West Kalimantan and East Kalimantan, also this week. The main mission was, of course, to deepen the economic relationship not just with West Kalimantan bordering Sarawak but in East Kalimantan where the new Indonesian capital of Nusantara is being developed. Sarawak has already identified several joint-ventures in developing dams in Kalimantan and even major real estate developer Ibraco Bhd was scouting about for possible projects in Balikpapan, the major city adjoining Nusantara. Awang Tengah was reportedly also reviewing localities for setting up a Sarawak trade and tourism office in Pontianak. This comes on the heels of the revival of air connectivity between Kuching and Pontianak next month. There has been much clamour both in Sarawak and West Kalimantan for flights between the two cities to resume after they were stopped during the Covid-19 pandemic. People-to-people exchanges have come back strongly since as witnessed by the daily long queues at the Tebedu-Entikong main border crossing as well as other secondary border posts. All these positive developments must be sustained through regular high-level official exchanges, especially in showing to the Indonesian side that free trade and the free flow of people across our common border is not a zero-sum proposition benefiting only one side. What happened in Jakarta this week also shows that Sarawak and Sabah can and do benefit substantially from close state-federal ties and working in tandem to take the fullest advantage from similarly close Malaysia-Indonesia bilateral ties.

Kedah PH deputy chairman Asmirul Anuar Aris said the state chapter will not stop its members from taking part in the gathering, which is being organised by a coalition of NGOs supportive of the unity government. 'PH is not involved in the rally despite receiving an invitation. However, members and supporters of PH parties are free to attend as part of exercising democratic rights,' Asmirul, who also chairs Kedah Amanah, told FMT. 'I've been informed that the rally is being organised by NGOs who intend to present 10 demands to the state government. 'These reportedly include matters related to entrepreneurship, land taxes, agriculture, and sports.' Promotional items for the rally have gone viral on TikTok, with claims that it is being organised by the Sekretariat Suara Anak Kedah, and widely shared by supporters of the unity government. The rally is expected to take place in front of the Kedah menteri besar's office at Wisma Darul Aman. Kedah police chief Adzli Abu Shah said the organisers have yet to submit any formal notification for the gathering. He said he had only learned about the event through social media and is still waiting for official details from the organisers.
