Mystery of missing man deepens as his Tesla Cybertruck is found abandoned at the Grand Canyon
The eerie discovery is elevating fears for the whereabouts of Thomas Gibbs, 35, who was last heard from around noon on July 22.
Gibbs was reported missing by his family on July 28, the same day rangers discovered his vehicle near the canyon's remote South Rim.
Investigators believe Gibbs may have attempted the treacherous Grandview Trail, a notoriously difficult path that descends sharply into the canyon toward Horseshoe Mesa.
The trail is described by the National Park Service (NPS) as, 'rugged, narrow and steep,' with sheer drop–offs and extreme heat – recommended only for 'experienced desert hikers'.
The search for Gibbs is unfolding as a 'megafire' rages across the Grand Canyon's North Rim, officials said.
The Dragon Bravo Fire, sparked by lightning on July 4, has scorched more than 105,000 acres, making it the largest wildfire in the U.S. so far this year.
As of August 1, it was just 9 percent contained.
The 6'1 tech entrepreneur is the founder of Gibbs Automation, a Pennsylvania–based software development firm, according to his LinkedIn page.
He had recently been working as a full–stack developer building custom web applications and database systems.
He has brown hair and eyes, no tattoos and was traveling alone.
Officials are urging anyone who was in the Grandview Trail area around July 22 – especially hikers who may have seen someone matching Gibbs' description – to call the National Park Service Tip Line at 888–653–0009.
More than 4.9 million people visited the Grand Canyon in 2024.
Since 2018, more than 1,100 people have gone missing in the Grand Canyon with at least six confirmed dead - most often from heat stroke, drowning, or deadly falls, according to TheTravel.com.
A glance at the National Park Service's cold case files shows just how easily people vanish in the vast wilderness.
In 2017, Jonghyon Won disappeared without a trace as no one even knew he planned to visit the park that day.
His abandoned car was later found near a trailhead, but no other clues ever surfaced.
In 2016, Floyd E. Roberts went missing while hiking in the canyon's backcountry. He separated from his group, intending to meet them later, but was never seen again.
In March, a family of three vanished during a wild storm after leaving the Grand Canyon for Las Vegas.
Jiyeon Lee, 23, Taehee Kim, 69, and Junghee Kim, 64, were last seen on March 13 in a rental BMW. Their last GPS ping showed them heading west on I-40 around 3:27 p.m., according to the Coconino County Sheriff's Office. They have not been found.

'I'm trying to be respectful here,' the cop said as Bruton cut him off and shouted: 'I'm not being respectful!' After his outburst, the officer let Bruton leave - but that was not the last he saw of the city manager. Bruton found the officer back at the station, where he continued to tell the cop off. Further body cam footage showed Bruton in the doorway of the police station continuing to complain and threaten the officer. 'So, when these firemen and police officers are in a hurry to get somewhere - they're speeding. I was in a hurry to get somewhere,' Bruton said, adding: 'So, let me tell you something. When I got out of the truck and told you there was a water emergency, that's when you should've ended it.' The officer responded: 'OK, not gonna end it right there. Listen to me, just because you're city manager...' Bruton responded: 'I'm not saying that. I had a water emergency, OK? I promise you. me driving 35mph up a 25mph road is not that big a deal to me when the people in Konawa don't have no water. 'I'll explain this to you and I'll explain this to Bryan. If you have a problem with that, then you might as well pack your s*** and head out the door right now.' 'Listen to me,' the officer said before Bruton shouted: 'I'm not gonna listen to you! I'm your boss! You do what I say.' 'It doesn't matter, you can't break the law like that,' the cop responded. 'People break the law! If you got a problem with it then write me a f***ing ticket and then I'll deal with you in there,' Bruton went on. The city manager then called someone to inform him he was going to fire the cop 'right now', adding that the officer 'still continued to run his mouth with me'. The video ended with Bruton storming off after the officer said 'we're done'. Bruton later told News4 he was 'ashamed' and 'embarrassed' of his actions that day. He told the outlet: 'He just caught the brunt of that from a situation that day. I didn't mean anything towards him. He does a good job and I apologized to him, and I'm making a public apology to him now. 'I'm embarrassed by it, I'm ashamed of it. My family, I put them in this and I'm ashamed that the city had to even endure it. So I'm hoping that we can get past it and I can grow from it as well.' Despite his apology, locals are livid with the way Bruton acted that day, with some calling for his resignation. 'He was only embarrassed and ashamed when it was made public we still need a new city manager,' one wrote on Facebook. Another commented: 'It's funny how he's embarrassed now that the whole world can see what an absolute jerk he is. What a pathetic excuse for a human!'

Body found in search for missing man, 40, last seen climbing into park amid murder probe
COPS have tragically discovered a body in the search for a missing man. Craig Foy, 40, was last seen near Bury Old Road in Prestwich, Manchester, on Saturday July 26. CCTV appeared to show Craig climbing into the park on the night he vanished. Now, a body has sadly been found by cops and is believed to be Craig. The force said formal identification has not yet taken place but his family had been informed. The frantic search for Craig spanned weeks and involved teams of officers scouring Heaton Park in Prestwich after CCTV footage emerged. Three people were arrested on suspicion of murder as part of the investigation. Two have been told they will face no further action and one has been released on bail, Greater Manchester Police said. Detective Chief Inspector Jill Billington, from GMP's Serious Crime Division, said: 'The investigation remains ongoing to establish the circumstances leading up to Craig's death, and to ensure that we can get the answers that his family deserve. 'We appreciate the support of the public in sharing our appeals to locate Craig and ask for his family to be given privacy, space and time to process their loss." Sean 'Diddy' Combs denied bail again ahead of sentencing
Why you can trust Sky News Sean "Diddy" Combs has been denied bail ahead of his sentencing on prostitution-related charges. Judge Arun Subramanian said the hip-hop mogul had failed to show sufficient evidence he is not a flight risk and also cited admissions of previous violence made during his trial. Combs, 55, has been in prison since his arrest in September last year. During a two-month trial, jurors heard allegations that he had coerced former girlfriends, including singer and model Cassie Ventura, into having drug-fuelled sex marathons with male sex workers, while he watched and filmed them. In July, he was found guilty of two counts of transportation for prostitution - but cleared of more serious charges of racketeering conspiracy and sex-trafficking, which carried potential life sentences. The rapper's legal team hailed this a "victory" and immediately applied for bail ahead of sentencing, citing his acquittal on the top charges. After this was denied, they submitted another application last week. Judge Subramanian has now rejected the request again. In denying the motion for bail, the judge found Combs had failed to show sufficient evidence to counter arguments he is a flight risk, writing in a court filing: "Increasing the amount of the bond or devising additional conditions doesn't change the calculus given the circumstances and heavy burden of proof that Combs bears." He also found that an argument by the music star's legal team that the squalor and danger of the Metropolitan Detention Center (MDC), where he is being held, did not warrant release. "The public outcry concerning these conditions has come from all corners," the judge wrote. "But as Combs acknowledges, MDC staff has been able to keep him safe and attend to his needs, even during an incident of threatened violence from an inmate." As well as Combs's bail application, his legal team has also filed a motion calling for him to be acquitted or given a new trial on the prostitution-related charges only. Discussions on sentencing guidelines which followed the jury's verdict suggest it is unlikely he will be jailed for this long, with an estimate of around two to five years, taking into account time already served. On Friday, Donald Trump was asked during an interview about a potential pardon for Combs following speculation about the issue. The president said it was unlikely, adding that the rapper was "very hostile" during his presidential campaign. Combs, who co-founded Bad Boy Records and launched the career of the late Notorious BIG, was for decades a huge figure in pop culture - a Grammy-winning hip-hop artist and business entrepreneur, who presided over an empire ranging from fashion to reality TV.
