3 kids, 3 adults and one fart-filled sequel: My honest review of 'The Bad Guys 2'

Hello, Yahoo readers. I'm Suzy Byrne, and I've been covering entertainment in this space for over a decade.
I'll be the first to tell you I'm no hardcore cinema buff. Since I had a child, though, I've made it a point to see as many kid-friendly movies as possible. Maybe it's because I'm a big kid ✔ and love a cheerful ending ✔. But also, as a busy working parent, getting two hours to turn off my phone, put up my feet and eat whatever I want while my child is fully entertained is the definition of movie magic.
So that's what this is — one entertainment reporter + her 10-year-old child + friends seeing family-friendly fare and replying all to you about the experience. Welcome to Kids' Movie Club.

Three adults, three kids and one crowd-pleasing movie: talk about the perfect recipe for a summer evening with family and friends.
The Aaron Blabey graphic novel series, on which the animated franchise is based, is a page-turning fave with the kids I took to see the sequel, and the first movie was a howl of a good time, even for the adults.
The sharp-dressed, smooth-talking charmer Mr. Wolf (voiced by Sam Rockwell) gets much of the credit, along with his core crew of sticky-fingered animal friends. We wanted to see if the Bad Guys really could go good — or what their version of 'good' even is.
I wondered aloud if that evil hamster from the first film, released in 2022, would be back as we took our seats. 'Um, Suzy — it's a guinea pig,' my friend's daughter corrected me before schooling me, the clueless adult, about the difference between all the rodents kids demand to bring home after a single visit to Petco. 'Sorry, that's what I mean,' I replied, remembering very well Professor Marmalade's signature guinea pig chubby cheeks — and sociopathic personality.
The Pierre Perifel and JP Sans-directed sequel — rated PG and running 1 hour, 44 minutes — has a menagerie of new characters and a plot that's a little all over the place, but we walked out feeling good about it, like we pulled off our own heist, stealing a few hours from our hectic lives for some solid entertainment.
The plot 🎬
The movie begins with how Wolf and crew — also including escapologist Snake (Marc Maron), the master of disguise Shark (Craig Robinson), the muscle Piranha (Anthony Ramos) and hacker extraordinaire Tarantula (Awkwafina) — came together years earlier, during a heist targeting an obnoxious billionaire in Cairo, and the origin of Wolf's sweet ride, which they speed off in. It jumps five years to when, freshly sprung from the big house, Wolf is driving a beater, which Shark has to push up hills, and none of the ex-cons can find jobs.
Maybe Wolf shouldn't have applied at the bank he robbed three times, but … desperate times!
The plot bounced a bit too much — they're at a Mexican wrestling tournament, crashing a wedding to steal a watch from a billionaire, stealing a rocket and going to space and, oh, it's suddenly raining gold — and there are a bunch of new characters to get to know. With the last film's chief villain, Marmalade (Richard Ayoade), in jail for much of this, the new nasties are the Bad Girls.
Led by Kitty Kat (Danielle Brooks), the girl group copycats the style of the Bad Guys, making the world think the crew has gone bad again. They then strong-arm them into participating in a heist robbing a rare metal, MacGuffinite, to ultimately steal the world's gold. Kitty Kat uses blackmail as leverage, telling Wolf that she will expose his love interest Governor Diane Foxington's (Zazie Beetz) criminal past as the Crimson Paw if he doesn't comply. The Bad Guys get the last laugh.
The commissioner (Alex Borstein) is back doing her same bumbling, stumbling and yet endearing thing. She's uncertain whether she can trust the Bad Guys, but they build a bond.
There's also romance of the interspecies variety. 'Snakey-cakes' gets charmed by a raven Susan/Doom (Natasha Lyonne), before learning she's part of Kitty's gang — and still can't quit her after. After going round for round, Wolf and Diane get out of the friend zone.
Parts that had the kids talking 👧🏻👧🏻👦🏻
The kids, ranging in age from 8 to 10, were locked in — so much so that I didn't order my daughter anything, even popcorn, and I didn't get pestered about it.
The kid crew laughed over Piranha's gas. Seriously, get that guy to a gastroenterologist. He farted room-clearing green puffs throughout the film, with a flatulence finale in a space suit that nearly suffocated his friend.
Keeping with the lowbrow likes: They also laughed when Piranha was told to 'stop farting, you maniac,' and was called a 'mango with teeth.' There were also giggles over someone almost having a 'pee pee accident.'
After the credits rolled, the kids wondered why there were so many human characters in the movie when the book has all animals as characters. They also talked about Blabey's spin-off book series, Cat On The Run, which takes place in the same universe as The Bad Guys and how it's OK, but not at the same level. With The Bad Guys series seemingly done after 20 books, the news that Blabey is launching two new book series is welcome.
The Bad Guys mood continued when we got home. My daughter streamed The Bad Guys: Haunted Heist on Netflix, which we missed when it came out in 2024, and is now rereading the books.
Parts that had the adults talking 👩🏻🙎🏻♂️🙎🏻♂️
The first installment of The Bad Guys had nods to Quentin Tarantino — with its opening diner scene straight out of Pulp Fiction — and the sequel felt just as inspired by classic (and not-so-classic) cinema. As I watched with my husband and our friend, I found myself mentally tallying all the movies and shows it seemed to reference.
For starters, it just generally had the vibes of Ocean's Eleven and The Fast and the Furious, but with cartoon animals instead of George Clooney. There's a Silence of the Lambs-inspired scene between the incarcerated Marmalade and Diane, and the Bad Guys' new jobs — super agents for an intergalactic league — seemed very Men in Black.
I leaned over to my husband during the movie, when the Bad Guys' getaway car was saved by a giant crane with a magnet, to utter a line from Breaking Bad: 'Yeah, bitch. Magnets!' Wolf sipped from a 'I see guilty people' mug (The Sixth Sense), and one character yelling, 'You lied to me!' made me think of Throw Momma from the Train. The woozy bride took me straight back to Sixteen Candles. Even MacGuffinite traces back to a Hitchcock reference.
I've since read that Brooks said she drew inspiration for Kitty Kat from Christoph Waltz's character in Inglourious Basterds, so the Tarantino love in The Bad Guys lives on.
We also talked about Lyonne killing it. She's not just busy with Poker Face, but is in Fantastic Four: The First Steps and has voice roles in this and Smurfs this summer.
I also spent a lot of time during the film thinking about how movie seats should be heated. They do it in cars … why not in theaters? I've since looked it up and discovered that's a thing for people who have home screening rooms. I guess I need fancier friends.
Appropriateness 🚽
The movie has good messages — how redemption, if it can be achieved, can change someone's entire path. Then there's the importance — and necessity — of friendship. It also had a rather complex theme for a kids' flick: The challenges faced by those reentering society after incarceration.
In addition to fart jokes and name-calling, there's stealing, explosions, fight scenes, kidnappings, people getting knocked out by tranquilizer guns and sedated. There are no permanent injuries in most cases, very Looney Tunes, but there's a lot going on for little watchers. There are also a couple of smooches.
Stay for the credits? 🎞️
Yes — there's a mid-credit scene involving Marmalade. We learn that he's been working with Kitty Kat and the girl gang all along — and, oh, he's an alien. His gold car turns into a spaceship and off he goes — likely to cause more trouble in The Bad Guys 3 if it's greenlighted, which we imagine it will be.

Wicked: For Good got the kids singing. They knew every word to the titular song in the trailer, having performed it at their school concert, and the countdown is on for November. Our littlest movie friend was excited by the Casper trailer ahead of the film's rerelease in October for its 30th anniversary.
They also played the trailer for The SpongeBob Movie: Search for Squarepants, which I'm already dreading. But with it coming out right before Christmas, timed to school break, I'll need to fill the time somehow. A sponge living in a pineapple with a snail it will be.

Joining him for the evening was an unexpected guest: jewelry designer Kendra Scott. The new couple made their red carpet debut, happily flashing grins as they posed for photographers. Brown donned a black suit and wide-brimmed black hat for the event, while his new girlfriend, 51, opted for a silver gown. Brown also took to Instagram to hard launch their relationship as the evening got underway. 'Hit the @amas red carpet with the best date by my side,' Brown wrote in the post, which also featured photos of the duo on the carpet. 'Ready to soak it all in and have some fun tonight!' Who is Zac Brown's fiancée, Kendra Scott? Scott began exploring the world of fashion in 2002, when she started designing jewelry at home and selling it at local boutiques. (Before that business endeavor, she sold comfortable hats for women going through chemotherapy as part of her first business, the Hat Box). Her company has since expanded into a billion-dollar jewelry brand with more than 100 retail stores and a strong online presence. Though Scott stepped down as CEO of her company in 2021, she currently still serves as both chief creative officer and executive chairwoman. The fashion designer has three sons from her first two marriages, and she got married again in early 2022 to Thomas Evans. Information about their split has not been made public. A look at Zac Brown and Kendra Scott's relationship Though the two being linked may have come as a surprise to many, Brown and Scott had been together for several months before hitting the red carpet, according to People. A source told the magazine that they were set up by a mutual friend and have become inseparable. In fact, the new couple was photographed together at the wedding of country artist Jamey Johnson on May 20. Brown was just one of many notable musicians to attend the ceremony, which was held at the Graystone Quarry in Tennessee. In June, Scott shared photos of her and her beau spending time together, from restaurants to a concert. She captioned the post, "Whenever I'm with you, I ain't worried about it. @zacbrown," as a reference to the Zac Brown Band song "I Ain't Worried About It." Though Scott may not be a country musician, it seems she and Brown still have plenty in common. The same source revealed to People that their roles as parents and love of philanthropy is part of their mutual attraction. Brown has not only been heavily involved with the nonprofit Hope for the Warriors over the years, but also founded Camp Southern Ground, as well. This residential camp provides aid to veterans when it isn't serving as a camp for kids during the summer. Meanwhile, Scott has the Kendra Scott Foundation, which runs programs that supply multilingual books to elementary schools and gives pediatric patients a chance to customize jewelry at no cost. What happened with Zac Brown and Kelly Yazdi? This new romance is the first for Brown since his split with actress Kelly Yazdi in December 2023. After just four months of marriage, the pair announced they were in the process of a divorce. Though they insisted things had ended amicably, it didn't take long for many fans to start to question what really led to the end of the relationship. In May 2024, Brown filed a temporary restraining order against Yazdi that demanded she remove an Instagram post that tarnished his public image and violated a previously signed confidentiality agreement. She has continued to speak out on social media with updates after the incident. Yazdi has yet to comment publicly, however, on her ex-husband's new relationship. Jackie Kennedy Was ‘Concerned' Over John F. Kennedy Jr.'s Romance With Daryl Hannah, Friends Reveal
John F. Kennedy Jr.'s family and friends opened up about his complicated five-year romance with Daryl Hannah in the new CNN documentary American Prince. 'His mom did have concerns with Daryl Hannah, the movie star,' Kennedy biographer Dr. Joseph Ponterotto revealed in the episode airing Saturday, August 9. 'It was once said, to love John, you need the approval of his mom first.' John Jr. and Hannah, now 64, reportedly originally met on vacation in Saint Martin in the early 1980s, with the two going on to have a highly publicized and often tumultuous relationship starting in 1988. Carole Radziwill — who was married to John Jr.'s first cousin Anthony Radziwill — opened up about the Kennedy family heir's 'pretty long relationship' with the Kill Bill actress in the first installment of CNN's three-part docuseries American Prince. The George Magazine editor started casually seeing future wife Carolyn Bessette during one of several breakups with the Splash actress in the early 1990s, yet he tried to save his relationship with Hannah prior to a life-changing event. Jackie Kennedy Hired a 'Spy' in the President's Office for Details About 'Suspicious Calls' to JFK 'He said that Daryl decided to move back to New York. … She was living in L.A. or something and that he felt like he owed it to her to see if it could work [now] that they were both living on the same coast,' Carole, 61, recalled. She went on, 'I'm sure he loved Daryl. They stayed together for a couple of years until his mother got sick.' Jackie was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma in December 1993, and while her prognosis initially seemed positive, the cancer spread to her spinal cord, brain and liver by the following March. The former first lady died in May 1994, around the same time as John Jr.'s first cousin Anthony had a recurrence of testicular cancer that eventually claimed his life. Amid a frenzy of media coverage, John Jr. briefly cut things off with Bessette to avoid having to hard-launch a new relationship in the wake of Jackie's death. 'This is John's life. His mom dies, he's mourning his mom but he's afraid that if the people know that he's broken up with Daryl Hannah, the media is going to focus on that, not on his mom's life,' John Jr.'s close friend Steve Gillon explained in American Prince. 'So, he went through the pretense of still being together [with Daryl] … just so everybody could see them together. That's the kind of calculation that John has to make that most of us don't have to make.' Once the media coverage settled down, Carole recalled that John Jr. felt freer to be his authentic self in public without worrying about disappointing his family. 'John and Jackie, they were really close,' Carole recalled. 'He was heartbroken, and it was a very hard time for him, but there was almost, I would say, an emancipation [after Jackie's death]. I think, for the first time, he felt free to do what he wanted to do in a way that he wouldn't have when his mom was alive. A lot of good came out of that.' How JFK Jr. and Carolyn Bessette Worked on Marriage, Planned for Kids Before Tragic Death John Jr. broke things off with Hannah for good in the mid-1990s before marrying Bessette in Cumberland Island, Georgia, in September 1996. Tragically, John Jr., Carolyn and her sister Lauren Bessette were killed in a plane crash near Martha's Vineyard in July 1999. Every Woman The Late John F. Kennedy Ever Loved
When John F. Kennedy first became president in 1961, people fell in love with his natural charisma, rugged handsomeness and overall trustworthy demeanor. Now, over 70 years after his tragic assassination, the father of two is still making headlines, but not for his lasting legacy in politics, but instead for his romantic relationships. From alleged affairs with people like actress Marilyn Monroe to his 10-year marriage with Jackie Kennedy Onassis, America simply cannot get enough of his life outside of the Oval Office. This is why we've decided to take you inside JFK's personal life and find out what really happened behind closed doors—including what exactly Jackie did and didn't know. Scroll on for more. A look at John F. Kennedy's relationships John, born in 1917, was the first Roman Catholic to be elected president. He served for two years before he was fatally shot and killed in Dallas, Texas, in 1963, leaving behind his wife, Jackie, and their two kids. And while their family and relationship might have seemed picture perfect on the outside, there were several different hurdles that the Kennedys faced, including a stillborn birth, a miscarriage, affairs and more—all of which were heavily publicized and discussed in the media. However, not everything discussed was true, and as of publication, the relationships below are the ones that historians believe to be accurate. Jackie Kennedy Onassis (1953 to 1963) John and Jackie—whose last name was Bouvier at the time—met in 1952 when he was a senator and she was a reporter. They fell in love, got engaged and married a year later. Flash forward to 1955 when the couple suffered a tragic miscarriage, which was then followed a year later by their daughter Arabella being stillborn. John wasn't even present forthe birth as he was on a yacht at the time, and Jackie was reportedly so mad she almost divorced him, but her sister Lee Radziwill talked her out of it. Following that, Jackie and John welcomed three children together–Caroline Kennedy, John F. Kennedy Jr. and Patrick Bouvier Kennedy—the latter of whom died after just two days in 1963. "After the death of Patrick, the other agents and I noticed a distinctly closer relationship, openly expressed, between the president and Mrs. Kennedy," Jackie's secret service agent, Clint Hill, wrote in his 2012 memoir, Mrs. Kennedy and Me. 'Prior to this, they were much more restrained and less willing to express their close, loving relationship while out in public. The loss of Patrick seemed to be the catalyst to change all that." The couple remained together until John's death in 1963. Following that, Jackie married a man named Aristotle Onassis in 1968, with whom she remained until her death in 1994. She was 64 at the time, and died from cancer. "Jackie Kennedy Onassis was a model of courage and dignity for all Americans and all the world," former President Bill Clinton said in a statement at the time. "More than any other woman of her time, she captivated our nation and the world with her intelligence, her elegance and her grace. Even in the face of an impossible tragedy, she carried the grief of her family and our entire nation with a calm power that somehow reassured all of us who mourned." John, Jackie, Arabella and Patrick are all buried next to each other at Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia and historians now believe that Jackie did know about her husband's affairs. Joan Lundberg (1956 to 1960) Joan Lundberg was a flight attendant who met John in 1956 and then became close to him after the death of Arabella left him feeling isolated from the rest of his family. She became pregnant in 1958; however, John mailed her some money to terminate the pregnancy. Their relationship ended in 1960 after he was elected president. 'The trauma of his [John] death was devastating on many levels," her son Zachary Hitchcock. said, per People. 'She lost a friend, a companion— the mere mention of John F. Kennedy would bring her tears. There was a lot of love and a lot of sadness and a lot of loss. 'The relationship encompassed friendship, romance, intellect—she adored him. They had an adventure together. It's funny how this girl from Racine, my mom, made an impact. She always spoke of him with fondness and affection. She loved, respected and missed him dearly." Lundberg died in 1983 from cirrhosis of the liver. She was 49. Judith Exner (1960s) Judith Exner and John dated for two and a half years before officially ending things in 1962. They met after she served as a middleman for JFK and Frank Sinatra's mobster friend Sam Giancana. She then went on to claim that John got her pregnant and insisted she have an abortion. 'For the past 25 years, I have been terrified to tell the truth about my relationship with Jack Kennedy. In fact, I've gone to great lengths to keep the truth from ever coming out, which is probably the only reason I'm alive today,' Exner told People in a late 1980s interview. 'With the exception of Sinatra, all the key figures involved in my story have been murdered.' Exner then died in 1999 at age 65 from breast cancer, and to this day, people still wonder if her and John's mob ties are what led to his murder. Mary Pinchot Meyer (1961) Mary Pinchot Meyer was the sister-in-law of Washington Post executive editor Ben Bradlee, who was believed to have had an affair with John at some point in 1961. "Why don't you leave suburbia for once — come and see me — either here — or at the Cape next week or in Boston the 19th," John reportedly wrote in a letter to Meyer, which was sold at auction in 2016. "I know it is unwise, irrational and that you may hate it — on the other hand, you may not—and I will love it. 'You say that it is good for me not to get what I want. After all of these years, you should give me a more loving answer than that. Why don't you just say yes?" Meyer was shot and killed in October 1964 and several people believe that the Kennedy family orchestrated her death to keep the affair from coming out and destroying their legacy. Mimi Alford (1962) Mimi Alford was a White House intern in 1962, and in her 2012 memoir Once Upon a Secret: My Affair With John F. Kennedy and Its Aftermath, she detailed that she and the president had an 18-month-long affair that ended after he shared that he wasn't willing to end his marriage. At the beginning of it all she was 19 and he was 44. 'It may be hard to accept that a chaste teenage girl can end up in bed with the President of the United States on her fourth day in the White House,' Alford wrote. 'Living with a secret had stunted me emotionally, and I realize now that my letters were only tentative steps at understanding. Taking complete control would demand intense self-reflection, and not just beginning and ending with my time at the White House. 'This book represents a private story, but one that happens to have a public face. And I do not want the public face of this story—the one where I will be remembered solely as a presidential plaything—to define me.' Alford is still alive and lives in New York City. She is 82 years old. Marilyn Monroe (1962) John's affair with Monroe (The Seven Year Itch and Gentlemen Prefer Blondes) is one of the most talked-about relationships throughout all of history. It started when she gave him a rather seductive performance of 'Happy Birthday' in May 1962. After that, the rumors began to spiral, and when Monroe died in August of that year, people began to wonder if John and his brother Robert 'Bobby' F. Kennedy had anything to do with it. "It was pretty clear that Marilyn had sexual relations with both Bobby and Jack," biographer James Spada said, per People. He also claimed that Monroe met John in 1954 and when he grew tired of her, he passed her on to his brother Robert in the spring of 1962. There are also reports that Monroe and Robert were heard screaming at each other on the night of her death, but those were never proven. 'The Kennedy's could not risk this coming out, because it could have brought down the President,' Spada said in that same People article. 'But the cover-up that was designed to prevent anyone from finding out that Marilyn was involved intimately with the Kennedy family has been misinterpreted as a cover-up of their having murdered her.'
