Man killed after crashing into tree near Blackiston: Police
Troopers were called to Sudlers Row near Blackiston Church Road about 3 a.m. for reports of the wreck. There, they found the man dead.
Police determined the man, who will be identified once family is notified, was speeding in his Honda Civic. He didn't stop at at a stop sign and his car went off the road and hit a tree. Police said he was also not wearing his seatbelt.

New NYPD bodycam video shows the moment a fearless pair of cops jumps into the water off the Rockaways – on the tail of an alleged Queens car thief who made the plunge to avoid arrest. The tense footage shows suspect Matthew Swafford, 24, walking along a dock and plunging into the East Rockaway inlet Thursday afternoon – despite demands from a female officer to 'Stop there!' The determined cop begins removing her gear from her department belt as her male colleague radios for help from the department's Harbor Unit. Seconds later, the female officer jumps into the water after Swafford – only for him to flail his arms and push her under the water, according to the footage and a criminal complaint. 4 With cops moments away from placing alleged car thief Matthew Swafford in cuffs last week, he plunges into the East Rockaway Inlet, authorities said. NYPD The male cop soon joins his colleague in the water, and both bring the suspect to shore. Swafford, who has a slew of prior arrests – including involving a slew of stolen vehicles – was immediately led away in cuffs. 'We went through all of this for a stolen car?' the female officer chided Swafford, according to a criminal complaint. He replied, 'Yeah, I know, it was stupid,' according to the court docs. 4 A determined NYPD cop removes her gear from her belt and jumps into the water after the suspect. NYPD The officers, assigned to the 101 Precinct's Public Safety Team, had been responding at the time to Beach 8th Street and Seagirt Avenue on reports of a stolen vehicle that had been recovered, authorities said. Members of the Rockaway Nassau Safety Patrol informed the officers that they'd found a black 2025 Honda sedan, which was stolen June 28, police said. The cops launched their search for the suspect, which ultimately took the unexpected turn into the inlet, authorities said. 'A suspected car thief tried to make his escape by diving into the water,' the NYPD posted on X alongside the video. 'He didn't count on our dedicated @NYPD101Pct officers following him without hesitation, putting duty before danger. 4 The accused car thief puts up a fight, but the fearless cops manage to bring him to shore. NYPD 'Their quick action ended the chase safely, bringing him onto shore, and into custody.' Swafford was arraigned Friday on charges of criminal possession of stolen property, attempted forgery of a vehicle identification, unauthorized use of a vehicle, obstructing governmental administration and resisting arrest, prosecutors said. He was ordered held on $15,000 cash bail or $45,000 bond by Judge Glenda Hernandez. Swafford's most recent prior arrest occurred June 29, when cops caught him with two other stolen vehicles – a 2018 Kawasaki motorcycle and a 2017 Honda Civic, according to that criminal complaint. In that case, bail was set at $4,000 cash and $12,000 bond. 4 Swafford has several prior arrests — his most recent in June when police found him with two other stolen vehicles, court docs say. NYPD Swafford was previously busted April 22 in possession of three other stolen vehicles – a Honda sedan, a Honda minivan and a BMW sedan, according to that court filing. He was ordered held on $20,000 cash bail or $40,000 bond in that case. It was not immediately clear how or when he ended up posting bail, but he is due back in court for both cases Aug. 21. He will reappear in court in connection to last week's bust Oct. 22. Swafford's rap sheet also includes a 2020 bust for first-degree robbery and separate 2017 arrests for assault on a police officer and misdemeanor assault, sources said.

Juvenile survives after car rolls 320 feet down side of Colorado mountain
A juvenile survived a crash in southwestern Colorado where a car went off the highway and rolled approximately 320 feet down the side of a mountain. The crash happened just after 8 a.m. Tuesday, according to the Colorado State Patrol. Troopers said they responded to the deadly crash on Highway 550 near mile marker 88, located south of Ouray on Red Mountain Pass. According to investigators, the crash involved one vehicle, a silver Honda Civic that traveled off the shoulder of the roadway and rolled approximately 320 feet down the side of the mountain before it came to a stop upside-down in the river. Two adults were deceased on the scene, according to troopers, and one female juvenile passenger was trapped inside the vehicle. Emergency responders said they were able to rescue the juvenile at 11:27 a.m. and she was rushed to the hospital. During the accident investigation and cleanup, the southbound lane of Highway 550 remained closed. There was no timeframe given for the road to reopen. The Colorado State Patrol is asking anyone who witnessed this crash and has not yet spoken to investigators to contact Colorado State Patrol Dispatch at 970-249-4392.

Men accused of staging phony car crashes for insurance payouts: Queens DA
Editor's note: The video above aired in a previous newscast. QUEENS, N.Y. (PIX11) – Two Brooklyn men are accused of deliberately causing three car collisions, including a Belt Parkway crash that was caught on camera, and then seeking insurance payouts. Prosecutors alleged that 53-year-old Jaime Huiracocha allegedly planned the crashes and lured people to participate with the promises of cash payouts, while 34-year-old Victor Murillo was accused of driving the car used in the collisions. More Local News Huiracocha allegedly met with a group inside an East New York medical clinic and instructed them on how to stage a car crash on Oct. 16, 2024, according to prosecutors. Prosecutors alleged that the participants were then told to send photos of the collision to a woman. The group then met up near the Belt Parkway, with a silver Honda Civic and a red Kia Sport in tow, according to prosecutors. Prosecutors alleged that the participants were told by Huiracocha what vehicles to sit in and the drivers were given headphones to communicate with one another. Murillo was asked to drive the Honda Civic, according to prosecutors. Prosecutors alleged that the other participants were given a black plastic tarp and told to cover the back window after the crash so Murillo could swap seats with a passenger without being seen. All of the cars then got on the Belt Parkway around 11 a.m. and the group allegedly picked out Asphia Natasha's vehicle for the staged collision, according to prosecutors. What they didn't know, prosecutors alleged, was that Natasha's vehicle had both front and rear dashboard cameras. The Honda Civic would then cut in front of Natasha, forcing her to stop short, according to prosecutors. Prosecutors said the Honda then backed up into Natasha's car. Passengers in the Honda then held up the plastic tarp on the back window and Murillo and someone else in the car allegedly swapped seats, according to prosecutors. Prosecutors alleged that four people got out of the Honda, including a woman who exited the driver's seat and a man who identified himself as Maikel Martinez. Martinez claimed that the woman was his wife, according to prosecutors. Prosecutors alleged that the Kia, which was following Natasha's car, pulled up to the crash. Murillo is accused of getting out of the Honda and into the Kia, which then fled the scene, according to prosecutors. Prosecutors alleged that Huiracocha and Murillo staged two other crashes that happened before the Belt Parkway collision on Oct. 3 and Aug. 24. Allstate Insurance Company said it paid out more than $82,000 for injury claims relating to those two crashes, and that it received a claim for damages to the Honda for the Oct. 16 collision. Huiracocha and Murillo were arraigned Wednesday on charges including insurance fraud, staging a motor vehicle accident, criminal mischief, conspiracy, reckless endangerment, grand larceny and attempted grand larceny.
