2 charged with murder following March shooting in Wilmington's Southbridge neighborhood
Two men have been charged with murder following the March 28 shooting of a 24-year-old man in Wilmington's Southbridge neighborhood. Quadre Wright, 20, and 18-year-old Amir Morris, were also charged with gun offenses, robbery and conspiracy in the fatal shooting, which killed Santee Renwick, police said on May 30. The shooting occurred in the 200 block of Bradford St. just after 2:30 p.m. That's where responding officers found Renwick critically injured. He later died at a local hospital, police said. BACKGROUND: Police ID man killed in Wilmington's Southbridge neighborhood Friday afternoon Renwick's killing came less than a day after a 42-year-old man was shot in Southbridge. Phillies star Bryce Harper leaves with injury in 1st inning vs Braves. How bad is injury?
Phillies star Bryce Harper leaves with injury in 1st inning vs Braves. How bad is injury? PHILADELPHIA − Phillies star Bryce Harper left the game in the first inning after getting hit on the elbow by a pitch on May 27. Harper had a count of 0-and-1 on him when Braves pitcher Spencer Strider hit him in the elbow with a 95 mph fastball. Harper immediately went down to the ground clutching his elbow and right forearm in pain. How severe is Bryce Harper's injury? The trainers came out to look at him, along with manager Rob Thomson. But after a few minutes, Harper left the field and went into the clubhouse to get examined. The Phillies later announced that Harper suffered a right elbow contusion, and that X-rays were negative. No doubt, the Phillies let out a big sigh of relief at that news. As did Harper, who had Tommy John surgery on his right elbow following the 2022 season. Harper missed the first month of the 2023 season to recover, and ultimately switched to first base after spending his career up until the surgery as an outfielder. How did the Phillies replace Bryce Harper? Edmundo Sosa ran for Harper and stayed in the game at third base. Alec Bohm moved from third base to first base. Harper was among the Phillies best hitters this season. After a slow start, he's batting .267 with 8 homers and 33 RBIs along with 8 stolen bases. It is not known if Harper will be able to return on May 28 when the Phillies play the Braves in the second game of a three-game series. Check back for more on this developing story. Traveling Memorial Day weekend? AAA predicts this many other travelers, too
Traveling Memorial Day weekend? You're not alone. More than 125,000 Delawareans are expected to travel 50 miles or more this holiday weekend, according to AAA. AAA considers the travel weekend to run May 22-26. While more travelers are expected on the roads, in the air and on boats this year compared with Memorial Day 2024, AAA predicts only about 1,000 more travelers from Delaware. Excluding the COVID-19 pandemic, that's the lowest year-over-year growth rate since 2016, AAA said. National numbers reflect this, too. AAA projects that 45.1 million people will travel nationally, an increase of 1.4 million travelers compared to last year. But that projection is also the lowest year-over-year growth rate in nearly a decade. AAA attributes this to rising costs of both goods and services across the country. Related: What to know about public transportation at the Delaware beaches this summer Most Delawareans who are traveling this weekend will be driving, AAA said. AAA expects nearly 90%, or about 112,000, First State drivers. Air travel is the next most common mode of transport, with about 11,000 Delawareans expected to fly. And nearly 3,100 people are expected to travel by train, bus or cruise. Drivers are expected to make up the lion's share of travelers nationally, too. AAA projects 39.4 million people will travel by car, or about 87% of travelers. While gas prices typically peak in the summer, AAA said prices this year are lower than last. Another 3.61 million people are expected to fly, while 2.08 million will travel by train, bus or cruise. Tornado confirmed in Sussex County following Friday's severe storms
The National Weather Service confirmed Saturday that a tornado hit Sussex County during a line of severe thunderstorms that moved through the region on May 16. Meteorologists from the National Weather Service office in Mount Holly, New Jersey, conducted a storm survey late Saturday morning near Bethel and Laurel. The survey confirmed that the tornado originated in Dorchester County, Maryland, and continued into Sussex County, south of Bethel. The tornado was an EF-1 with peak winds between 100 to 110 mph. The path created by the tornado was 11.4 miles, and the width of the path was 600 yards. There were no injuries or deaths associated with the twister. An EF-1 is the second-lowest level for a tornado on the Enhanced Fujita Scale, which measures tornado wind speeds based on the damage left behind. According to the National Weather Service, a tornado warning is issued when a tornado is sighted or indicated by weather radar. During the storm, the Weather Service issued a tornado warning for Seaford, Georgetown, and Millsboro that remained in effect until 7:30 p.m. More: 8 ways Delaware homeowners can cut energy costs as summer approaches Nearly all of Delaware was under a severe thunderstorm warning until 7:45 p.m. You can contact staff reporter Anitra Johnson at ajohnson@ Greg Giesen contributed to this story. Man, 48, dies after car goes into oncoming lanes and hits parked trailer near Angola
A 48-year-old Millsboro man was killed early May 16 when he crashed into a parked flatbed trailer near Angola, Delaware State Police said. The identity of the man, who was pronounced dead at the scene, is being withheld by police until his family is notified. More: Newark man who died 2 days after crash near Glasgow is identified by police The man was in a Nissan Sentra a little before 6 a.m., heading southbound on Hollymount Road north of John J. Williams Highway (Route 24), investigators said. At the same time, two commercial flatbed trailers were parked in the northbound section of the highway lanes: partially in the northbound shoulder and partially in the grass. There were orange reflective traffic cones positioned alongside the trailers. For reasons under investigation, police said the Sentra left Hollymount Road's south lane and entered the north shoulder, where it hit one of the trailers. The impact pushed the first trailer into the second trailer. Hollymount Road was closed for more than three hours while police investigated and then cleared the scene.
