Traveling Memorial Day weekend? AAA predicts this many other travelers, too
Traveling Memorial Day weekend? You're not alone.
More than 125,000 Delawareans are expected to travel 50 miles or more this holiday weekend, according to AAA. AAA considers the travel weekend to run May 22-26.
While more travelers are expected on the roads, in the air and on boats this year compared with Memorial Day 2024, AAA predicts only about 1,000 more travelers from Delaware. Excluding the COVID-19 pandemic, that's the lowest year-over-year growth rate since 2016, AAA said.
National numbers reflect this, too.
AAA projects that 45.1 million people will travel nationally, an increase of 1.4 million travelers compared to last year. But that projection is also the lowest year-over-year growth rate in nearly a decade.
AAA attributes this to rising costs of both goods and services across the country.

Most Delawareans who are traveling this weekend will be driving, AAA said.
AAA expects nearly 90%, or about 112,000, First State drivers.
Air travel is the next most common mode of transport, with about 11,000 Delawareans expected to fly. And nearly 3,100 people are expected to travel by train, bus or cruise.
Drivers are expected to make up the lion's share of travelers nationally, too.
AAA projects 39.4 million people will travel by car, or about 87% of travelers.
While gas prices typically peak in the summer, AAA said prices this year are lower than last.
Another 3.61 million people are expected to fly, while 2.08 million will travel by train, bus or cruise.

INRIX, a provider of transportation data, expects afternoons to be the most congested for drivers. It recommends hitting the road during the morning hours, specifically:

Before noon on May 24
Before 1 p.m. on May 25
Before 2 p.m. on May 26

United Airlines Breaks Silence After Big Newark Airport Update
On June 2, the Federal Aviation Administration revealed a construction project on one of Newark Liberty International Airport's three main runways wrapped up nearly two weeks early. "The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey has completed construction of Runway 4-Left/22-Right at Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR). This runway will only be open for departures, while FAA flight crews ensure the runway's navigational aids are tested, calibrated and safe to use for arrivals. This is standard protocol to ensure a runway is safe to use for pilots and the flying public," the FAA said in a statement. "The airport will continue to operate with a maximum arrival rate of 28 aircraft an hour until those checks are complete. After that, the airport's maximum arrival rate will be 34 aircraft an hour." The announcement comes before the summer travel schedule becomes fully booked and is welcomed news for United Airlines, which operates nearly 70% of flights from Newark Liberty International Airport. "The airport's runway construction project is now complete. That means all runways at Newark are open, and we're confident that will lead to even better on-time performance for our airline," United said in a statement on June 2. The airline touted Newark Liberty International Airport's on-time rates over the busy holiday weekend that saw record travel numbers. "During Memorial Day weekend, one of the busiest of the year, EWR beat New York LaGuardia (LGA) and John F. Kennedy International (JFK) in on‑time departures, and over the last two days of the weekend, EWR had the best on-time rates of any large airport in the country," the airline added. U.S. State Department Issues First Travel 'Warning' of June
The U.S. Department of State has issued its first travel advisory of June. May was a busy month for the U.S. Department of State. Several countries in Europe, including Belgium, Italy and Switzerland, received travel advisories. Even though Italy is considered a popular travel destination in the summer, there are serious concerns about terrorist attacks. Additionally, the U.S Department of State issued a Level 4 warning for Somalia. That means Americans should avoid traveling there at all costs. "Do not travel to Somalia due to crime, terrorism, civil unrest, health, kidnapping, piracy, and lack of availability of routine consular services," the U.S. said. "Due to security risks, U.S. government employees working in Somalia are prohibited from traveling outside the Mogadishu International Airport complex where the U.S. Embassy is located. The U.S. Embassy in Mogadishu maintains normal staffing." The latest country that has received a travel advisory resides in West Asia. On June 3, the U.S Department of State issued a Level 1 warning for Qatar. That's the lowest advisory level for safety and security risks. "The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has issued a Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) and/or a Special Federal Aviation Regulation (SFAR) for the region, including Qatar," the Department of State's travel advisory states. "This is due to risks to civil aviation from political and military tensions in the region. The notice advises U.S. operators to review current threat information and to report safety or security incidents. For more information, U.S. citizens should consult the Federal Aviation Administration." If Americans travel to Qatar in the near future, they should keep travel documents up-to-date, sign up for the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP), and read the Country Security Report for Qatar.
