Phillies star Bryce Harper leaves with injury in 1st inning vs Braves. How bad is injury?
PHILADELPHIA − Phillies star Bryce Harper left the game in the first inning after getting hit on the elbow by a pitch on May 27.
Harper had a count of 0-and-1 on him when Braves pitcher Spencer Strider hit him in the elbow with a 95 mph fastball. Harper immediately went down to the ground clutching his elbow and right forearm in pain.
How severe is Bryce Harper's injury?
The trainers came out to look at him, along with manager Rob Thomson. But after a few minutes, Harper left the field and went into the clubhouse to get examined.
The Phillies later announced that Harper suffered a right elbow contusion, and that X-rays were negative.
No doubt, the Phillies let out a big sigh of relief at that news. As did Harper, who had Tommy John surgery on his right elbow following the 2022 season. Harper missed the first month of the 2023 season to recover, and ultimately switched to first base after spending his career up until the surgery as an outfielder.
How did the Phillies replace Bryce Harper?
Edmundo Sosa ran for Harper and stayed in the game at third base. Alec Bohm moved from third base to first base.
Harper was among the Phillies best hitters this season. After a slow start, he's batting .267 with 8 homers and 33 RBIs along with 8 stolen bases.
It is not known if Harper will be able to return on May 28 when the Phillies play the Braves in the second game of a three-game series.

Ketel Marte and Corbin Carroll's home runs power Diamondbacks to 8-3 win over Braves

ATLANTA (AP) — Ketel Marte and Corbin Carroll each homered twice and the Arizona Diamondbacks snapped a five-game road losing streak with an 8-3 win over the Atlanta Braves on Tuesday night. Zac Gallen (4-7), who had struggled with an 8.02 ERA in his last four starts, surrendered just one earned run in seven innings. He gave up four hits, struck out four and retired the first 10 batters of the game. Marte was 3 for 3 with 3 RBIs and two walks and Corbin Carroll was 3 for 4 with four RBIs and three runs scored. Carroll now has 18 home runs on the season. Spencer Strider (0-4) surrendered three home runs while his ERA climbed to 5.68 for the season after giving up five runs on six hits in five innings. Marte hit his first home run 445 feet into the right field seats in the first inning. Carroll's second home run was a three-run shot in the ninth inning that put the game out of reach. Braves rookie catcher Drake Baldwin hit his sixth home run and threw two runners out in the seventh inning, catching Carroll stealing and picking Marte off first. Baldwin was named the NL's rookie of the month in May. The Braves have lost nine of their last 12. Key moment With two outs and two Atlanta runners on in the eighth inning and Arizona leading 5-3, Diamondbacks center fielder Alek Thomas made a running catch just in front of the wall in center to take a potential game-tying hit away from Marcell Ozuna. Key stat Strider has given up at least one home run in 11 of his last 14 starts (including playoffs), dating to the 2023 season. He has surrendered five in 19 innings this season. Up next Diamondbacks RHP Merrill Kelly (5-2, 3.78 ERA) will face reigning NL Cy Young winner Chris Sale (3-3, 3.06) in the second game of the three-game set on Wednesday. ___ AP MLB:

Phillies' Bryce Harper, wearing elbow guard, homers in first AB after HBP, missing 5 games

TORONTO — Bryce Harper hopes he'll have the elbow guard he wants in a few weeks. He has never felt comfortable hitting with one; maybe it dates back to that bulky brace he wore for months after returning from Tommy John surgery. He has commissioned his friends at Absolutely Ridiculous to make a proper guard. Advertisement But he might never hit again without the makeshift guard he wore Tuesday night when he crushed a home run on the third pitch he saw in his return to the Phillies' lineup. Harper saw a hanging 0-2 splitter from Toronto Blue Jays righty Bowden Francis and drove it into the visiting bullpen at Rogers Centre. His blast followed a two-run Trea Turner homer and was only a small part of a six-run Phillies first inning. Elbow Guard Bryce 😤 Bryce Harper homers in first game since last Tuesday. — MLB (@MLB) June 3, 2025 It was a decent initial boost after a lost weekend without Harper as the Phillies were swept by the Milwaukee Brewers. He was plunked on the right elbow by a 95-mph Spencer Strider fastball a week ago and missed the next five games. He was not wearing an elbow guard. Now, he is. 'He's ready to go,' Phillies manager Rob Thomson said before Tuesday's game. 'There's still some swelling in there, but it's not sore — to my knowledge anyway. So he's ready to go.' All it took was three pitches for Harper to prove his manager right. (Photo of Bryce Harper on May 24: Dennis Lee / Imagn Images)
