Trade! Eagles get a cornerback from Raiders. What it means for Kelee Ringo, Adoree Jackson
PHILADELPHIA − The Eagles are adding to their depth at cornerback by trading with the Las Vegas Raiders for Jakorian Bennett. Bennett was the Raiders' fourth-round pick in 2023. He started 7 games last season and 11 in his career. The Eagles are giving up defensive tackle Thomas Booker, who figured to be in the rotation behind the three primary tackles in Jalen Carter, Jordan Davis and Moro Ojomo. The NFL Network was first to report the trade. Can Jakorian Bennett win cornerback job? For the Eagles, it adds competition to the cornerback position opposite of Quinyon Mitchell. The two main competitors for that spot are Kelee Ringo, in his third season, and veteran Adoree Jackson, signed to a one-year deal after losing his starting job with the Giants last season. Bennett was taken one pick before Ringo in the 2023 draft's fourth round, at No. 104 overall. Bennett played collegiately at Hutchinson Community College and Maryland. Bennett, at 5-foot-11, 195 pounds, is considered undersized for an outside cornerback. But he started 7 of the Raiders' first 11 games last season before undergoing shoulder surgery and missing the rest of the season. Celebrate the Eagles' Super Bowl win with our new book Still, getting Bennett is a possible sign that the Eagles aren't sold on either Ringo or Jackson as the starter, or even Eli Ricks. On Aug. 4, Eagles defensive coordinator Vic Fangio was asked if he has seen any separation between Ringo and Jackson. They have split first-team reps pretty evenly during training cmap. "It's close," Fangio said. "I think both of them are having a good camp, but it's close and been happy with both of them, and we'll see." Evidently, the Eagles want to see more. Thomas Booker trade gives Ty Robinson chance At defensive tackle, Booker played in all 17 games last season with 1 sack as a reserve. He was a fifth-round pick of the Houston Texans in 2022. But the Eagles evidently found him expendable after seeing fourth-round pick Ty Robinson have an impressive start to training camp. Robinson has already deflected two passes in training camp, and has done well against the second unit of offensive linemen. The Eagles also like Gabe Hall, a practice-squad player last season. Why Eagles' Saquon Barkley turned down Donald Trump's special invitation
PHILADELPHIA − Citing a busy schedule, Eagles running back Saquon Barkley said that he turned down a chance to serve on President Donald Trump's council on sports, fitness and nutrition. This after Barkley golfed with the President and flew on his private plane before the Eagles' visit to the White House on April 28 to celebrate the team's Super Bowl victory. But on Aug. 4, Barkley said he was flattered to be asked, but that he was going to be "super busy" with the NFL season rapidly approaching, and thus couldn't serve. "A couple months ago, it was brought to my team about the council," Barkley said after practice. "So I'm not really too familiar with it. I felt like I am going to be super busy, so me and my family thought it would probably be of best interest to not accept that. "I was definitely a little shocked when my name was mentioned. I'm assuming it's something great, so I appreciate it but was a little shocked when my name was mentioned." Celebrate the Eagles' Super Bowl win with our new book Trump issued an executive order on July 31st establishing the council, which is tasked with advising the president and recommending actions on a number of fronts. That includes challenges and school-based programs that reward excellence in physical education; fitness goals for American youth, with the aim of fostering a new generation of healthy, active citizens; and strategies for reestablishing the Presidential Fitness Test. Trump's executive order said up to 30 members will serve on the council. Some of those named, in addition to Barkley, were 49ers star Nick Bosa, Dolphins QB Tua Tagovailoa, Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker, Pro Football Hall of Famer Lawrence Taylor and LIV golfer Bryson DeChambeau. Others include retired golfers Jack Nicklaus and Gary Player, former Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo, hockey legend Wayne Gretzky and NFL commissioner Roger Goodell. Covering Eagles from training camp to the Super Bowl, and the meaning of a chair and vomit
By the time you read this, the Eagles will already will have sweltered through their first 10 days of training camp. At that point, we'll have a better idea of which rookie players are standing out, which veterans are in danger of losing jobs, and whether Saquon Barkley can duplicate his incredible 2,000-yard rushing season from 2024. And of course, we'll have some sort of idea as to whether the Eagles will have a chance to repeat as Super Bowl champions. How to order our Eagles book: 'Flying High' championship book is perfect gift for Eagles-loving fans I often get asked what it's like covering a Super Bowl team. It's exhilarating, of course, reporting on an event watched by more than 100 million people. And being in the locker room for the Eagles' celebrations, both to end the 2017 and 2024 seasons, along with the parades, are something I'll never forget. But for me, training camp is always the most interesting part of covering the Eagles. Yes, it's hot, sometimes brutally so. The competition is always fierce. There are 90 players on the roster when training camp starts. By the end of August, that number is whittled down to 53 players, with another 16 making up the practice squad. The best part about it is that by NFL rule, every training camp practice has to be open to the media in its entirety. Once training camp ends, and all the way through the regular season and playoffs, we get to see only the first 15 minutes or so of practice. That consists basically of stretching, warm-ups and a few individual drills. And with only a few hundred fans, generally season-ticket holders, allowed in, I feel like we have an exclusive view into what's going on with the team. There have been some memorable moments, such as right guard Mekhi Becton vomiting on the sidelines last August, practically 10 feet in front of me (yes, it was gross). There's always a bunch of trash-talking, and a few instances of pushing and shoving, especially when the Eagles have a joint practice with another team. This happened two years ago when Jason Kelce fought with Indianapolis Colts linebacker Zaire Franklin because he didn't like how Franklin took some "cheap shots" at Eagles running back Kenny Gainwell. Some of these examples can be a harbinger of what can happen during the regular season. OK, maybe not Becton vomiting. But one of the bigger trash-talkers last summer was an otherwise quiet rookie in 2024 first-round draft pick Quinyon Mitchell, a cornerback. Often, wide receivers A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith would test Mitchell by matching up with him. Mitchell quickly proved that he was ready for the NFL, with a few choice words to the star receivers, such as the one time he told Brown that his "route was trash." Sure enough, Mitchell became a key component to the Eagles' Super Bowl run. In 2020, the Eagles surprisingly drafted quarterback Jalen Hurts in the second round when they were less than a year removed from making QB Carson Wentz the highest-paid player in the NFL at that time. Yet wide receiver DeSean Jackson, then toward the end of his career, said he was already lobbying for Hurts to start over Wentz. As it turned out, Jackson's words were prophetic. Wentz had a terrible season, as did the Eagles. Wentz was benched in favor of Hurts for the final 4½ games. Wentz was traded after the season, and Hurts ended up becoming the Eagles' franchise quarterback. Other times, training camp observations foretold troubling times. The most obvious case came in 2015, when high-priced free agent running back DeMarco Murray was among a few other veterans sitting out of practice in order to rest. Eagles safety Malcolm Jenkins, a veteran leader who would never dream of missing a day of camp when he wasn't injured, was clearly upset that Murray was sitting out. So Jenkins famously brought a folding chair out to the sidelines where Murray and the others were watching practice, asking each player if they wanted to sit down so they could be more comfortable. Murray, of course, was a bust, and the Eagles fell apart that season. Needless to say, no one had to bring out a chair last summer for Barkley. What will happen this season? Sure, the Eagles are expected to be among the favorites to get back to the Super Bowl. And what happens in training camp could set the tone for another run. Phillies announce lineup for Wednesday game vs. Cubs. Can Jesus Luzardo turn it around?
PHILADELPHIA − The Phillies are hoping that Jesus Luzardo can turn it around after two dreadful starts in which the lefthander gave up 20 earned runs in his last two starts, spanning 5 2/3 innings. But Luzardo will have to do it against a tough Chicago Cubs lineup that battered the Phillies on June 10 in a 8-4 Phillies loss. It was the Phillies' 10th loss in 12 games. Advertisement During those two starts, Luzardo's ERA went from 2.15 to 4.46. Phillies star Bryce Harper leaves with injury in 1st inning vs Braves. How bad is injury?
PHILADELPHIA − Phillies star Bryce Harper left the game in the first inning after getting hit on the elbow by a pitch on May 27. Harper had a count of 0-and-1 on him when Braves pitcher Spencer Strider hit him in the elbow with a 95-mph fastball. Harper immediately went down to the ground clutching his elbow and right forearm in pain. How severe is Bryce Harper's injury? The trainers came out to look at him, along with manager Rob Thomson. But after a few minutes, Harper left the field and went into the clubhouse to get examined. Advertisement The Phillies later announced that Harper suffered a right elbow contusion, and that X-rays were negative. No doubt, the Phillies let out a big sigh of relief at that news. As did Harper, who had Tommy John surgery on his right elbow following the 2022 season. Harper missed the first month of the 2023 season to recover, and ultimately switched to first base after spending his career up until the surgery as an outfielder. How did the Phillies replace Bryce Harper? Edmundo Sosa ran for Harper and stayed in the game at third base. Alec Bohm moved from third base to first base. Thomson said after the Phillies' 2-0 victory that Harper would be re-evaluated before the next game against Atlanta. Harper was not available for comment after the game. "He's certainly in a lot of pain," Thomson said. "Whenever one of your top hitters, or best hitter, gets hits like that, there's always some concern. But he's a tough guy ...
