Mikel Arteta ruthlessly mocked as Arsenal manager's word for 'friendly' comes to light

Daily Mirror3 days ago
Mikel Arteta has internally made it clear that he does not believe in the concept of friendlies and has used a different word with his Arsenal players during pre-season
Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta has been ridiculed after it emerged that he doesn't buy into the concept of a 'friendly' and instead told his players that their pre-season outings were 'tests'.

The Spaniard doesn't like the term attached to non-competitive matches as he looks to finally end the Gunners' wait for a Premier League title. Arsenal have been over in Asia playing several of their domestic rivals as they look to get match ready.

In recent days they were beaten by AC Milan on penalties, saw off Newcastle 3-2, before later losing to rivals Tottenham on Thursday. Arteta has internally made it clear that he doesn't believe in the friendly concept, as per the Athletic, but that has seen him mocked by fans.

One fan said on social media: "Then Arsenal failed their first and last tests." Another claimed: "Does this mean arsenal failed their test against Tottenham??" Along the same theme was: "Well they lost a test against Spurs".
Arsenal will begin their season with a stern test away at Manchester United. The Red Devils have impressed in pre-season and the Gunners will be under pressure to showcase their title credentials when they head to Old Trafford in a fortnight.
Arteta has presided over three successive seasons where Arsenal have finished second, but he's confident that his side have benefited from their three matches in Asia. He said: "Yes, for the three of them and today in particular it showed different demands, different understanding of things that we have to do.
"I'm very pleased with what I've seen in most of the things that we've done but we missed something you know in certain moments, that preciseness, that moment that unlocks the result and the moment to turn the result away and win the match but in terms of attitude, the desire, level of organisation in the team, it was great and we have to continue to elevate a little bit all the individual aspects."
Arteta has continued to employ unorthodox methods. Last pre-season, during a team dinner, the Spaniard hired professional pickpockets to go around the tables taking things from the players. After dinner was finished, Arteta asked the team to empty their pockets, when several individuals clocked they were missing their valuables. It was then that the Arsenal boss underlined the need to be alert at all times.
The 43-year-old has, again, invested heavily in his squad as he looks to end a trophy drought that dates back to his FA Cup triumph in 2020. The former Manchester City assistant claimed his squad lacked depth recently, but he's since seen Viktor Gyokeres arrive from Sporting Lisbon.

Aston Villa send warning message to Premier League rivals by demolishing European giants – but suffer huge injury scare

ASTON VILLA suffered a huge injury blow with just ten days to go until the start of the season. Unai Emery's side sent a warning to the rest of the Premier League by demolishing European giants Roma 4-0 in a friendly last night. 4 4 4 A strong Villa XI had a three-goal lead at half-time after strikes from Emi Buendía, Jacob Ramsey and Ollie Watkins. Donyell Malen continued his fine pre-season form by adding a fourth late on. Emery made nine changes at half-time in what seemed to be the perfect night for Villa in Walsall. But disaster struck just after the break when Morgan Rogers was forced off injured. The England star managed only three minutes before going down in pain. Reports suggest that Rogers was clutching his left ankle. He tried to run it off after treatment but could not and was subbed off for 18-year-old Jamaldeen Jimoh-Aloba. It left Villa fans worried, with one saying: "Please be just a knock." Another added: "Really hoping the injury to Rogers isn't serious as he is irreplaceable for us." Rogers was a key man for the club last term, scoring 14 goals and adding 16 assists in 54 games as they narrowly missed out on Champions League qualification by goal difference. Villa face Marseille on Saturday and Villarreal on Sunday ahead of their Prem opener against Newcastle on August 16. 4

Son Heung-min admits Los Angeles FC were NOT his first choice club after emotional Tottenham departure - as he reveals what changed his mind

Son Heung-min openly admitted Los Angeles FC were not his first choice destination after deciding to bring his 10-year chapter at Tottenham to an emotional close. The 33-year-old was officially unveiled by his new side on Wednesday after completing a move worth over £20million - a record fee paid by an MLS club. It was no secret that he was on his way this summer, and he was spotted in the stands during LAFC's 2-1 win against Tigres the day before the announcement. Speaking at his introductory press conference in Los Angeles, South Korean legend Son revealed he had to be persuaded to make the move to the United States, before a conversation led to him 'changing his heart' and signing an initial two-year deal. 'They've been absolutely working so hard to get me here to join LAFC,' Son said. 'If I'm honest, it was not my first choice but John [Thorrington, LAFC general manager] was the first call when the season finished and John changed my mind. 'He changed my heart. 'I'm so happy to see all the Korean fans, I was at the game and I saw you supporting like crazy and I wanted to run on the pitch and show my performance. 'I'm here to win and I will perform. 'I will definitely show you something exciting in… are we calling it football or soccer? I will definitely show you some exciting football, and we will have success.' Son went on to describe the impact his decision to leave Spurs took, recalling feeling 'very empty' after walking away from the club for which he scored 173 goals. 'I felt like I gave it all, but I felt like I needed a new challenge and I chose LAFC,' he added. 'I'm old, but I still have good physicality and I still have good quality.' Earlier, a teary Son had issued a heartfelt message to Tottenham supporters. 'How to find the right words for this? I don't know. I have been thinking for days. It's impossible. But here I go,' Son wrote. Son broke into tears when he announced his decision to leave Spurs 'It's time for me to say goodbye to Tottenham. My home for the past decade. When I arrived in 2015, I didn't speak English, I didn't know London, but you welcomed me with open arms, believed in me, and stood by me through every high and low. 'I was just a boy from Korea with big dreams who was supposed to have no chance. And now, 10 years later, North London is in my heart forever. 'I've made friends for life here, had the honour of becoming a godfather here, and had the privilege of captaining our special club here. I've poured my heart and soul into this club, which makes this the hardest decision ever. 'I thought if I was ever going to leave, it would have to be on my terms, on the best terms, when our mission had been accomplished together. 'With pride and honour.' Son will reunite with former Spurs team-mate Hugo Lloris at LAFC. The Los Angeles side topped the Western Conference last season, but lost to Seattle Sounders in the playoffs before LA Galaxy won the MLS Cup.

Thursday's briefing: Son completes MLS move and Man Utd close in on Sesko

Manchester United believe they are closing in on a deal for RB Leipzig's Benjamin Sesko, which looks like dealing another blow to Newcastle as the uncertainty over their star striker Alexander Isak continues. Troubled Sheffield Wednesday are up for sale on the eve of the new Sky Bet Championship. Son: LAFC switch 'not my first choice' A new era begins in Black & Gold. — LAFC (@LAFC) August 6, 2025 Son Heung-min admitted Los Angeles FC were not his first choice destination after he ended a 10-year stay at Tottenham, but insisted they had 'changed his heart' on a record Major League Soccer transfer. The 33-year-old on Wednesday completed a move worth in excess of £20million – the highest transfer fee paid by an MLS club – after it was revealed on Saturday he would be leaving Spurs following 173 goals in 454 appearances and months after he captained the club to Europa League glory. At an introductory press conference in Los Angeles, the South Korea international admitted he had to be persuaded of the merits of moving to the United States before signing an initial two-year deal. 'They've been absolutely working so hard to get me here to join LAFC,' Son said. 'If I'm honest, it was not my first choice but John (Thorrington, LAFC general manager) was the first call when the season finished and John changed my mind, he changed my heart.' United confident on Sesko deal Manchester United believe Benjamin Sesko favours them over a move to Newcastle (Andrew Milligan/PA) Manchester United believe Benjamin Sesko favours a move to Old Trafford over Newcastle as they look to strike a deal with RB Leipzig for the Slovenia forward. The 22-year-old striker has been the subject of a tug of a war as the Premier League sides attempt to bolster their attacks ahead of the new season. Newcastle made the first move and their second bid for the striker was worth a reported 82.5million euros (£71.9m) plus add-ons. United have followed with a lower offer of 75m euros (£65.4m), plus a potential 10m euros (£8.7m) in add-ons, but PA understands United believe Sesko favours them. The Slovenia international, who scored 21 goals in 45 appearances in all competitions last term, has long been on the Red Devils' radar, stretching back to when he moved from Domzale to RB Salzburg in 2019, and they have made him their priority in the search for a new striker. Isak trains alone as uncertainty continues Alexander Isak arrived to train alone after his Newcastle team-mates had gone home on Wednesday (Owen Humphreys/PA) As Newcastle face the prospect of disappointment in their pursuit of Sesko, the future of their current star striker Alexander Isak is no clearer, with the Sweden international only reporting for training on Wednesday after the rest of Eddie Howe's squad had gone home. Isak, 25, did not join Newcastle's pre-season trip to Singapore and South Korea, and had recently been training at former club Real Sociedad as Liverpool saw a bid worth £110million rejected by the Magpies. Howe's players were back in training on Wednesday after two days off with their families invited to join them later in the day, but PA understands Isak, who reported back to their Benton base on Monday, was told not to come in until after they left. The £63million frontman has been a huge hit since his arrival from Sociedad during the summer of 2022 and played a key role last season as they ended their 70-year wait for a major domestic trophy with the Carabao Cup and qualified for the Champions League for the second time in three seasons. EFL in talks with Chansiri over Wednesday sale Sheffield Wednesday are up for sale on the eve of the new season (Cody Froggatt/PA) The English Football League is in 'advanced discussions' with Sheffield Wednesday owner Dejphon Chansiri over the sale of the troubled club on the eve of the new season. The crisis-hit Owls are under various EFL-imposed embargoes for financial breaches and failed to pay salaries on time for the third consecutive month in July, with players refusing to play in a behind-closed-doors friendly against Burnley last Saturday. While the players have said they will play in Sunday's opening Sky Bet Championship fixture at Leicester, the EFL is now working with Chansiri to find new ownership. 'The League wants to see a strong, stable and competitive Sheffield Wednesday, and for that to happen we are clear that the current owner needs either to fund the club to meet its obligations or make good on his commitment to sell to a well-funded party, for fair market value – ending the current uncertainty and impasse,' the governing body said. What's on today? Several clubs are in action in the qualifying round of the Europa Conference League, with Hibs away to Partizan and Dundee United travelling to Rapid Vienna. Linfield are away to Vikingur and Larne host Santa Clara. In League One, Port Vale host Cardiff.
