Is Coolie's Hindi release a mere formality? Rajinikanth's gangster drama may struggle to get screens
Rajinikanth is gearing up for the release of Coolie, one of the biggest films of the year. It has been dubbed in Hindi as Coolie The Powerhouse. This version will be released alongside the original Tamil one on August 14. Coolie is expected to take a big start in Tamil.. It may, however, struggle to make an impact in Hindi as it is releasing alongside Hrithik Roshan's War 2. Coolie may struggle to get screens in Hindi, says trade analyst Coolie, starring Rajinikanth, is unlikely to open big at the Hindi box office on August 14. In fact, it may struggle to secure enough screens. Rohit Jaiswal, a trade analyst, told Indiatimes that the film is likely to get only 15% of the screens in Hindi as it faces a mighty opponent in War 2. Moreover, Saiyaara and Mahavatar Narsimha too will be playing in select theatres when it releases. 'As it stands, Coolie is a formality release in Hindi. However, if Pen Marudhar (the distributors) step up in the week that remains and shows its might, the situation could be different,' added Rohit. Aamir Khan plays a key role in Coolie. His association with the film is expected to help it attract the Hindi audience. However, this may not happen. Rohit had earlier told Indiatimes that a single star alone can't elevate a film as its fate depends on the content. Vettaiyan, Rajinikanth's previous release, too was a dud in Hindi even though it featured the legendary Amitabh Bachchan in a key role. Similarly, Kaala (2018) too did not find any takers in Hindi. In fact, 2.0 is the only Rajinikanth film in recent years that opened well in Hindi and emerged as a success. It grossed Rs 188 crore in its full run in the market. What's Coolie about? Coolie is a gangster drama directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj. It centres on a former kingpin who has a score to settle with some old foes. The film also explores the shady world of gold smuggling. The trailer suggests that it features hero elevation sequences, punch dialogues, and catchy songs. The cast is headlined by Rajinikanth, Aamir Khan, Upendra, Nagarjuna, Sathyaraj, and Shruti Haasan. It will hit the screens on August 14 alongside Hrithik Roshan and Jr NTR's War 2, which is directed by Ayan Mukerji.
