Umno leader calls for probe into AGC's weaknesses over Najib decision
PETALING JAYA : Umno Supreme Council member Puad Zarkashi has called for the Attorney-General's Chambers' shortcomings to be investigated, following the granting of a conditional discharge to Najib Razak over charges of money laundering.
Puad said the High Court's decision yesterday was an embarrassment to the AGC, coming after Najib's trial was postponed for six years. He said the case was overseen by three attorneys-general, and asked: 'Where is the AGC's credibility?'
He also questioned why the AGC had gone ahead with pressing charges against Najib if the prosecution was not prepared. However, he dismissed a call by former PKR deputy president Rafizi Ramli for the prosecution to confirm that charges would be refiled against Najib as soon as possible.
'The issue here isn't about refiling charges, but the reasons the discharge was granted,' Puad said. 'The (AGC's) weaknesses should be looked into.'
Earlier this evening, Pejuang called for a special committee to be set up to review high-profile cases, especially those involving politicians facing criminal charges who are granted a conditional discharge. The party's information chief, Rafique Rashid Ali, said the panel should determine if there are any questionable elements affecting the integrity of the high-profile cases.
The High Court, granting Najib a discharge not amounting to an acquittal on Friday, said there had been a plethora of postponements since the case was brought against Najib in 2019, indicating that the prosecution was not ready.
The AGC later stated that the need to secure documents required as evidence left it with no other option but to agree to the discharge.

Zara Qairina case: Five teens arrive at KK court face bullying charge
The vehicle carrying the five teenagers arriving at the courthouse grounds around 8.25am, escorted by police vehicles. KOTA KINABALU: Five teenagers to be charged for bullying Zara Qairina have arrived at the Kota Kinabalu Court. They arrived in a heavily-tinted police van at around 8.30am and were quietly escorted into the Children's Court. Watching briefs for the case, including Zara's mother's lawyers as well as defence counsels subsequently arrived starting 9am. Welfare officials were also seen arriving. The court security was stricter this time, where only relevant personnel were allowed into the premise. Court proceedings are believed to have started. Previously, the Attorney General's Chambers (AGC) said that the prosecution of five minors in Zara Qairina Mahathir's case was made under Section 507C(1) of the Penal Code because it is related to bullying only and not causing the death of the 13-year-old girl. The AGC explained that the decision to charge the five teenagers under Section 507C(1) was based on a thorough review of the investigation papers. "Therefore, the AGC reiterates that the charge under Section 507C(1) of the Penal Code in this case is grounded on evidence and facts obtained from the completed investigation," the statement read on Tuesday (Aug 19). Zara Qairina died at Queen Elizabeth I Hospital in Kota Kinabalu on July 17, after being found unconscious in a drain near the school dormitory on the morning of July 16 in Papar. Umno Youth chief Akmal to face court charge over Facebook post allegedly disturbing public order
Akmal leads Umno Youth during a protest in Kepala Batas over the upside-down Jalur Gemilang issue. — Photo from Facebook/Pemuda Umno KUALA LUMPUR (Aug 20): The Attorney General's Chambers (AGC) said yesterday that it would charge Umno Youth chief Datuk Dr Akmal Saleh over a Facebook post on his account, along with two other individuals. In a statement, the AGC said the decision followed an examination of investigation papers submitted by the police. 'Based on the testimony and evidence obtained, this department has decided to bring charges under Section 505(b) of the Penal Code against Datuk Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh, Muhammad Hilman Idham and Siti Hajar Aflah Sharuddin,' it said. 'The statements made by these individuals were found to have disturbed public order or constituted improper use of network facilities or network services.' The AGC said all charges will be filed at the Magistrates' Court with the relevant local jurisdiction soon. It added that the statements in question were found to have disturbed public order or constituted improper use of network facilities or services. Section 505(b) handles those causing fear or alarm to the public, and to induce them to commit an offence against public order. If convicted, a person can be punished with a prison term up to two years, a fine, or both. Hilman is the Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia Youth chief, with his charge is believed to be over a video of him speaking at a July 29 protest in which he allegedly claimed the arrest of some Bersatu members was politically motivated. It is unsure which Facebook post is responsible for Dr Akmal's charge. Meanwhile, Chandrasegaran Subramaniam will be charged under Section 233(1)(a) of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1988. Last week, Dr Akmal said he was called by the federal police to give his statement over the protest he led on the display of Jalur Gemilang in Kepala Batas, Penang. The AGC had previously warned Malaysians against vigilantism in cases involving the improper display of the Jalur Gemilang, amid furore over the Umno Youth protest. Dr Akmal has since posted on Facebook that he is abroad performing umrah, or the Muslim minor pilgrimage to Mecca, and will return early to face the charge at the Magistrates' Court in Bukit Mertajam on Friday. lead Muhamad Akmal Salleh
