Mukhriz hopes to have Muda, Urimai in urban-focused opposition bloc

Pejuang president Mukhriz Mahathir hinted that the goal is to split the non-Malay vote to allow for Malay voters to be the kingmakers in urban and semi-urban seats. PETALING JAYA : Pejuang president Mukhriz Mahathir has shed more light on the proposed two-pronged coalition approach aimed at helping to address Perikatan Nasional's lack of non-Malay support. Mukhriz said PN chairman Muhyiddin Yassin had called for Pejuang and other 'small parties' to form a 'loose' opposition coalition that would focus on contesting 50 to 60 seats in urban and suburban areas, Utusan Malaysia reported. 'The parties in this coalition would be a mixture. I'm hoping, for example, for the likes of Muda, the Malaysian Advancement Party led by P Waytha Moorthy, Parti Sosialis Malaysia, P Ramasamy's Urimai, and many other small parties that have a role to play,' he said. The former Kedah menteri besar said the idea was for this coalition to canvas for non-Malay support, while PN helped deliver Malay votes since they still form a significant portion of voters in urban and suburban seats. He hinted that the goal was to split the non-Malay vote to allow for Malay voters to be the kingmakers. 'In rural areas, if the Malays who are the majority are divided, then the minorities would be the kingmakers. So why not use the same formula in urban areas?' he said. Ramasamy had said PN's non-Malay components were 'too mild and conservative' to articulate the broader concerns of the community, while the coalition continues to struggle in the west coast and southern states which have non-Malay majorities. The two-pronged coalition proposal aims to counter any stigma surrounding PAS among non-Malays, acknowledging the coalition's limited traction within the community. Political analysts had poured cold water on the proposal, however, saying any non-Malay bloc aligned with PN was likely to fail as long as PN maintained its Malay-Muslim dominance. 'Grievances with Rama? We must compromise' Asked whether the Malay community's unease with Waytha and Ramasamy would hinder Malay support for their parties, Mukhriz said: 'We must compromise.' He said such compromise was what paved the way for Barisan Nasional's 61-year reign to come to an end, citing ther short-lived reconciliation between his father, Dr Mahathir Mohamad, and Anwar Ibrahim. 'So we may have differences, but we can consider our differences as far less significant compared with the greater problem of allowing the Madani government to remain in power. 'When I was the Kedah menteri besar, and Ramasamy was Penang deputy chief minister, I fought with him many times … from the issue of Sungai Batu to Hindu temples, and so on. 'But now, we sit at the same table for discussions because we recognise that we have no choice but to find common ground so that we can move forward as one. 'If we remain divided, other people will benefit. So we must compromise.'

Pejuang leader moots white paper for bullying in schools

Pejuang has called for a white paper to be tabled to address nationwide bullying cases in schools, and urged various stakeholders to participate in drafting the document within the next three months. In calling for the document, which he dubbed 'Buli Musuh Negara' (bullies, the enemies of the nation), party spokesperson Rafique Rashid Ali stated that it should incorporate insights from parents, teachers, and parent-teacher association (PTA) committee members from educational institutions nationwide.

Police to scrutinise opposition rally speeches

KUALA LUMPUR: Police will scrutinise the speeches delivered by opposition leaders during the rally at Dataran Merdeka earlier this evening. Acting Kuala Lumpur police chief Datuk Mohamed Usuf Jan Mohamad said action would be taken if any of the speeches touched on issues related to race, religion, and royalty (3R). He said police would also examine the speeches for any elements of sedition. "If we find elements of sedition or anything related to the 3R issues, action will be taken. "As I've emphasised before, the right to peaceful assembly exists, but we also have laws and acts in place. "If the event goes beyond those limits, action will certainly follow," he said after the rally ended at Dataran Merdeka today. He added that police would conduct a more detailed study of the rally before deciding whether to call in the organisers for advice and improvements should they plan any future gatherings. "Whether it's action or discussion, we will decide later. "What's important is that no untoward incidents occurred," he said. Among political leaders who spoke at the rally were former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad; Bersatu president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin; Pejuang president Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir; Gerakan president Datuk Dr Dominic Lau; and several other opposition party and non-governmental organisation (NGO) leaders.

Mukhriz says Pejuang open to new Opposition alliance, may consider electoral pact with Perikatan in GE16

SHAH ALAM, July 20 — Parti Pejuang Tanahair has reportedly expressed openness to the formation of an Opposition alliance, following the meeting chaired by Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin. Its president Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir also said yesterday that Pejuang may consider an electoral pact with Perikatan Nasional (PN) to avoid clashes and overlapping seats in the 16th general election (GE16). 'For example, Pejuang withdrew from defending four seats — Jitra and Anak Bukit in Kedah, and Jeram and Batang Kali in Selangor — which ultimately led to victories for PN. 'At the time, we handed over those seats entirely to PN and campaigned for them to ensure they won. And it worked,' he was quoted saying by Utusan Malaysia. Pejuang previously formed its pact Gerakan Tanah Air (GTA) with Parti Bumiputera Perkasa Malaysia (Putra), Berjasa, and National Indian Muslim Alliance Party for the 15th general election. Mukhriz said Pejuang welcomes a dialogue with any group and has been consistent in raising issues affecting the public. He also said the party has always leaned closer to PN and participated in its programmes without feeling out of place. Despite that, Mukhriz said any potential cooperation with PN or other parties would depend on current political developments. 'If there is alignment in our positions, then cooperation is possible. The idea of joining PN as a coalition member is still open for discussion,' he said. 'In our meeting yesterday, no final decision was made on the form of collaboration that could be established,' he added, referring to the one called by Muhyiddin. Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia president Muhyiddin had on Friday said he held a meeting with leaders of several opposition parties to discuss forming a coalition focused on national interests. Muhyiddin said the proposed coalition aims to provide a united opposition front and reinforce the check and balance function in and out of Parliament. PN component parties Gerakan and Malaysian Indian People's Party were present — but not PAS. Other parties represented included Socialist Party of Malaysia (PSM), Malaysian United Democratic Alliance (Muda), Parti Bumiputera Perkasa Malaysia (Putra), People's Progressive Party, Berjasa, United for the Rights of Malaysians Party (Urimai), and Malaysian Advancement Party.

Umno leader calls for probe into AGC's weaknesses over Najib decision

Umno Supreme Council member Puad Zarkashi said the decision to discharge Najib Razak was an embarrassment to the Attorney-General's Chambers. PETALING JAYA : Umno Supreme Council member Puad Zarkashi has called for the Attorney-General's Chambers' shortcomings to be investigated, following the granting of a conditional discharge to Najib Razak over charges of money laundering. Puad said the High Court's decision yesterday was an embarrassment to the AGC, coming after Najib's trial was postponed for six years. He said the case was overseen by three attorneys-general, and asked: 'Where is the AGC's credibility?' He also questioned why the AGC had gone ahead with pressing charges against Najib if the prosecution was not prepared. However, he dismissed a call by former PKR deputy president Rafizi Ramli for the prosecution to confirm that charges would be refiled against Najib as soon as possible. 'The issue here isn't about refiling charges, but the reasons the discharge was granted,' Puad said. 'The (AGC's) weaknesses should be looked into.' Earlier this evening, Pejuang called for a special committee to be set up to review high-profile cases, especially those involving politicians facing criminal charges who are granted a conditional discharge. The party's information chief, Rafique Rashid Ali, said the panel should determine if there are any questionable elements affecting the integrity of the high-profile cases. The High Court, granting Najib a discharge not amounting to an acquittal on Friday, said there had been a plethora of postponements since the case was brought against Najib in 2019, indicating that the prosecution was not ready. The AGC later stated that the need to secure documents required as evidence left it with no other option but to agree to the discharge.
