The city has been awarded hosting rights for a stage of the Ultimate Tennis Showdown (UTS), a shortened, fast-paced form of the sport with time limits and players encouraged to show their personality.
China's top men's player Zhang Zhizhen has been confirmed for the event, along with the world's No 9 and 10, in Russia's Andrey Rublev and Alex de Minaur of Australia. There will be a total of US$1.1 million in prize money, with Rublev chasing further success in the city to add to his triumph in last year's Bank of China Hong Kong Tennis Open.
Michael Cheng Ming-git, president of the Hong Kong, China Tennis Association (HKCTA), welcomed the announcement, made on Saturday at the second UTS event of the year, in Nimes, in the south of France.

'UTS Hong Kong marks UTS' first-ever event in Asia, and the only Asian stop in the 2025 tour,' Cheng said.

Olympic fencing winner Cheung Ka-long to face ex-world champ in Hong Kong exhibition bout

Two-time Olympic winner Cheung Ka-long will face off against former world champion Enzo Lefort of France in the city in a fortnight, the organisers announced on Tuesday. Advertisement To celebrate the co-hosting of the National Games, which runs in Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macau from November 9 to 21, a local charity organisation is staging a fencing exhibition at the Hong Kong Palace Museum later this month. The August 26 event, organised by the GDCD Association, will pit left-hander Cheung against Lefort – a three-time world champion and a Tokyo Olympics men's foil team gold medallist – in a rematch of their quarter-final tie at the Paris Olympic Games last year. Hongkonger Cheung won 15-14 on the way to clinching his second straight Olympic gold medal, having done so at the Tokyo Games in 2021. The exhibition will mark the first time the Palace Museum in West Kowloon will host a fencing event, and a senior official of the local association admitted he was 'sceptical' about the possibility at the start. China's Zhong Man, the 2008 Olympics sabre champion, will face Hong Kong's Antonio Lam. Photo: AFP 'The Games at the Grand Palais in Paris last summer proved fencing events could be held anywhere,' said Antonio Lam Hin-chung, acting general secretary of the Fencing Association of Hong Kong, China. 'There was doubt initially, but we found that it was feasible to stage an event [at the museum].'

World Games: Hong Kong's Tomato Ho denied squash bronze, Cheung poised for wushu final

Hong Kong's Tomato Ho Tze-lok was unable to give the city its fifth medal at the World Games in Chengdu on Tuesday, as she was defeated in the women's squash bronze medal match. Ho, who had gone so close to earning a place in the gold medal match in her narrow semi-final loss on Monday, could not lift herself again at the Hi-Tech Zone Sports Centre and was well beaten by Spain's Marta Dominguez. Dominguez took a tightly contested first game 12-10, before dominating the second, which she won 11-5. Ho did not lead at any point in the 37-minute match, and looked despondent as the match slipped away. She lost the third game 11-2, sealing a 3-0 victory for her opponent. Tomato Ho took a blow to the head in her bronze final. Brazilian recruit backs Kowloon City plan to develop Hong Kong football talent

Kowloon City have signed only a handful of experienced players this summer, all on the proviso that they help develop the club's young talent. Advertisement The club's vice-chairman Andrew Mak Yung-pan has said that the club's overarching priority is to provide a clear professional pathway for promising young players. And one of the senior recruits, Luizinho, said he was fully behind an agreement that he said would be mutually beneficial. The 29-year-old Brazilian, who joined from BC Rangers, said: 'It is very important to pass on anything I can to try to help the young players, but they also help us. They bring energy every day, which keeps you motivated and makes you push even more. Luizinho (right) said his new club could challenge for silverware with their young squad. Photo: Jonathan Wong 'Training together, they get more experience, and step-by-step we will grow as a team. I liked the club's plan. You saw last season that they had a good team, the players were united like a family, and I wanted to come to help.' Kowloon signed nine players aged 21 or younger.
