Sam Surridge ties Messi for MLS goals lead as Nashville blanks Toronto
Sam Surridge scored his MLS lead-tying 18th goal to push Nashville SC near the top of the Eastern Conference standings with a 1-0 victory over visiting Toronto FC on Saturday night.
Surridge's first-half tally pulled him even with Lionel Messi, who scored his 17th and 18th goals earlier Saturday in Miami's 5-1 home win over the New York Red Bulls.
The win ensured Nashville (14-5-5, 47 points) will finish the weekend no worse than second in the East, and first if Cincinnati fails to win its match at Real Salt Lake later Saturday.
Nashville won their second straight and sixth out of seven, and have lost just once in their last 18 in all competitions dating back to April 26.
Goalkeeper Sean Johnson made four saves to keep Toronto (5-12-6, 21 points) in the match, while Joe Willis kept his ninth clean sheet while not having to make a single stop.
The Reds were shut out for the first time in six games, scoring in the last three despite the departure of Italian attacking stars Federico Bernardeschi and Lorenzo Insigne at the beginning of July.
Two of Johnson's best stops came against 2022 MLS MVP Hany Mukhtar.
The first of those came in the 28th minute when the German attacker unleashed a left-footed shot from the edge of the penalty box that appeared bound for the bottom right corner.
Unfortunately for Johnson, the rebound of his fine sprawling stop rolled only as far as the feet of Surridge, who finished before the keeper could regain his footing to attempt a second save.
Toronto thought they had a precious chance to level the score when referee Sergii Boiko ruled Walker Zimmerman had hauled down Deandre Kerr in the penalty area in the 60th minute.
Boiko was summoned to the replay monitor, and after a review, it was ruled the foul had occurred fractionally outside the box, resulting in a direct free kick.
Johnson had another exceptional one-on-one save on Mukhtar in the 79th minute. On the other end, Toronto got into a few promising positions late but failed to make Willis stop any of their seven total shots.

The Toronto Blue Jays are the best team in baseball with a 63-43 record heading into Monday night's game in Baltimore against the Orioles. According to that gives Toronto a 97.3 per cent chance of making the post-season and an 8.6 per cent shot at winning the World Series. Major League Baseball's trade deadline is Thursday at 6 p.m. ET and, with the Blue Jays in a great position to win the American League East, they are expected to be buyers as they try to gear up for a deep post-season run. Here are five things to consider heading into the deadline. Some of the best teams in Blue Jays' history took shape at (or in one case, slightly after) the trade deadline. Mookie Wilson (1989), David Cone (1992), Rickey Henderson (1993), Edwin Encarnacion (2009) and David Price (2015) all had various degrees of success in Toronto after joining the team via trade midseason. Toronto's bullpen has been a strength all season, with a collective 3.66 ERA, seventh best in MLB. The Blue Jays' relievers have a 29-14 win-loss record through Sunday's 10-4 loss to the Tigers in Detroit. Still, bullpen depth is a must-have for any long post-season run and there are still some gaps, like Chad Green. The veteran right-hander has been used sparingly this season as he has struggled to a 4.85 ERA. Potential targets: Pete Fairbanks, the closer for the Tampa Bay Rays the past three seasons, has a 2.84 ERA and 17 saves over 38 innings and has a reasonable US$3.67-million contract this season with a club option for 2026. Felix Bautista has 19 saves and a 2.60 ERA for the Baltimore Orioles this year but as he's on a two-year deal worth US$2-million, he'd get the Blue Jays a lot of bang for their buck. Switch-hitting slugger Anthony Santander, along with Scherzer, was one of the Blue Jays' biggest off-season acquisitions when he signed a five-year, US$92.5-million contract on Jan. 20. He's been a disappointment, however, with a .179 batting average, six home runs and 18 RBIs over 50 games before Toronto put him on the injured list on May 30 with left shoulder inflammation. He was then transferred to the 60-day IL on July 4. When he will return and what he can contribute are two unknowns, so another reliable bat could be an asset. Possible targets: St. Louis Cardinals slugger Nolan Arenado could be available but he comes with a hefty price tag: He has two years and US$42-million remaining on his contract beyond this season, earning US$27-million in 2026 and US$15-million in 2027. Arizona Diamondbacks power hitter Eugenio Suarez would also add some pop to Toronto's lineup — he already has 36 home runs this year — and will become a free agent this winter. Any trade the Blue Jays make will likely involve one of their prospects. Toronto general manager Ross Atkins has spent the past couple of years restocking the organization's minor-league system, but it will still be a fine line to walk trying to win now but also save for the future. Shortstop Arjun Nimmala is considered the top prospect in the Blue Jays' organization, currently playing for the single-A Vancouver Canadians. It's unlikely that the 19-year-old would be traded as he will be Bo Bichette's replacement if the former all-star gets traded or decides to sign elsewhere when his contract expires this off-season. According to MLB, Toronto's next highest-ranked prospects are all pitchers: right-hander Trey Yesavage (AA), lefty Ricky Tiedemann (AAA), southpaw Johnny King (A) and righty Khal Stephen (AA).

Guardians' Emmanuel Clase on paid leave in betting probe

The three-time All-Star right-hander's leave runs through Aug. 31, MLB said in a statement on Monday. The Guardians issued a statement acknowledging that they had been notified of the move. 'We have been informed that no additional players or Club personnel are expected to be impacted. The Guardians are not permitted to comment further at this time and will respect the league's confidential investigative process as we continue to fully cooperate,' the team statement read. Clase, 27, is 5-3 with a 3.23 ERA and 24 saves in an MLB-leading 41 appearances this season. He led the American League in saves and made the All-Star team in each of the three previous campaigns, including a career-high 47 saves in 2024. Clase is 21-26 with 182 saves and a 1.88 ERA in 366 career games (one start) with the Texas Rangers (2019) and the Guardians (2021-25). Clase is the second Guardians pitcher to get caught up in the MLB investigation. Right-hander Luis Ortiz was placed on similar leave on July 3, which was later extended through Aug. 31. According to reports, Ortiz's investigation focuses on in-game prop bets involving two pitches that garnered higher activity than usual. One was tossed in a June 15 game against the Seattle Mariners, and another on June 27 versus the St. Louis Cardinals. Ortiz, 26, is 4-9 with a 4.36 ERA in 16 starts this season. The native of the Dominican Republic was acquired from the Pittsburgh Pirates as part of a three-team trade that included the Toronto Blue Jays on Dec. 10.

LAFC adds M Mathieu Choiniere on loan from Swiss club
(Photo credit: David Kirouac-Imagn Images) Los Angeles FC acquired midfielder Mathieu Choiniere on loan from GC Zurich of the Swiss Super League in a loan that runs through the 2025 calendar year. Choiniere, 26, has plenty of familiarity with MLS as a Canada native who came up through CF Montreal's youth system. In 119 appearances (89 starts) with CF Montreal from 2018-24, the two-time MLS All-Star scored 11 goals with 10 assists. In 17 games (eight starts) in Switzerland, he scored one goal. Choiniere also has 17 appearances with Canada's national team, including three in this summer's CONCACAF Gold Cup. 'Mathieu is a proven performer in our league whose experience, intelligence, and versatility in midfield will be a tremendous asset to our group,' LAFC general manager John Thorrington said in a release. 'We're thrilled to welcome him to LAFC as we strengthen our roster in pursuit of more trophies.'
