Expansion opening coincides with Excel's 25th anniversary year
LONDON: Excel London – part of ADNEC Group, a Modon company – has successfully hosted the inaugural event in its new state-of-the-art expansion – making it the largest fully integrated conference and exhibition centre in Europe.
The weekend's season finale of the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship marked the opening of the new 25,000sqm purpose-built space, built by McLaren Construction, expanding the venue's existing world-class facilities by a further 25% – totalling 125,000sqm (1.3m sqft).
Developed due to growing demand from the UK, Europe and North America, the expansion forms part of a wider £350 million investment programme from ADNEC Group in London's business tourism economy, and forms part of Excel's mission to become the best event destination in the world.
Offering stunning views of London's skyline, the new facilities include an expanded International Convention Centre – allowing Excel and London to compete for a some of the largest congresses in Europe – together with ultra-modern exhibition halls, conference spaces and meeting rooms.
Built to leading BREEAM sustainability standards, the expansion includes new public green spaces, an enhanced waterfront for pedestrians and cyclists and, like the entirety of Excel, uses 100% renewable energy. In addition, the construction process saved more than 11,000kg of CO2e by using Cemfree, an ultra-low carbon masonry mortar.
Humaid Matar Al Dhaheri, Chairman of Excel London and Managing Director and Group CEO of ADNEC Group, said: 'The expansion of Excel marks a pivotal moment and a strategic investment to drive growth for ADNEC Group, as well as reinforce London as a world-leading event destination.
'This expansion enhances our competitiveness to attract the largest international events, generating significant economic flows for the city, and supporting thousands of businesses and local jobs. The increased space directly translates into higher revenues and profits through improved occupancy rates and the ability to host larger and concurrent events.
'The flexible spaces allow us to accommodate new types of events, increase our annual event count, and attract leading global names in vital sectors such as technology and science. This expansion is the driver of our future growth, enabling us to better serve our clients and strengthen our role as a vital economic engine for London.'
Jeremy Rees, CEO of Excel London, added: 'This expansion is a historic moment of pride not just for Excel in its 25th anniversary year, but for the entire city of London. It is not just an increase in space, but an investment in the future and a testament to our commitment to providing a world-class environment for world-class events…fitting therefore that the spectacle of Formula E should be the first.'
He added: 'Interest and bookings for our new expansion, and Excel as a whole, are at unprecedented levels, with 10 major international congresses already confirmed for 2026 – a record for a single year – and demonstrating London as a global events destination.'
Excel, together with its new entertainment district Immerse LDN, hosts more than 400 events annually, welcoming four million visitors – a quarter of these from overseas – with these figures expected to rise over the coming years. The venue was acquired by ADNEC Group in 2008 and, thanks to their investment and vision, has grown from strength to strength ever since.

Witkoff and Putin meeting 'highly productive', Trump says

US President Donald Trump on Wednesday said the meeting between US special envoy Steve Witkoff and Russian President Vladimir Putin was "highly productive". He added that "great progress was made" and that he had updated some European allies on the details of the meeting. "Everyone agrees this War must come to a close, and we will work towards that in the days and weeks to come," he said on his Truth Social platform. But Washington still expects to impose secondary tariffs on Moscow's trading partners on Friday, a senior administration official told The National. In July, the US set a 50-day deadline for Moscow to stop hostilities, threatening to impose secondary tariffs on trading partners importing Russian fuel. Mr Witkoff's visit is viewed as a last-ditch effort to end the conflict ahead of a deadline on Friday. The administration official added that 'the Russians are eager to continue engaging with the United States'. Mr Putin's foreign affairs adviser said that the two men had a 'useful and constructive conversation' that focused on Ukraine as well as 'prospects for possible development of strategic co-operation between the US and Russia '. Mr Trump, who campaigned on ending the war that has raged since early 2022, has become increasingly frustrated with his counterpart as Moscow's forces advance in Ukraine and its bomb and missile strikes killed hundreds of civilians. Overnight on Tuesday, Russian forces hit a recreational centre in Ukraine's southern Zaporizhzhia region, killing two people and injuring 12, including two children, according to local authorities. On entering office, Mr Trump attempted a more conciliatory tone with his Russian counterpart, in contrast to his predecessor Joe Biden, who enacted punishing sanctions against Moscow over the conflict. But relations frayed following a series of meetings with Ukrainian and Russian officials that failed to bring the war to a halt.

Oil rebounds on Trump threats on Russian crude buyers

LONDON - Oil prices rebounded from the previous session's five-week low on Wednesday, as traders focused on U.S. President Donald Trump threatening India with higher tariffs over its Russian crude purchases, and a larger-than-expected U.S. crude draw. Brent crude futures gained $1.11, or 1.6%, to $68.75 a barrel by 1119 GMT, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude was up $1.12, or 1.7%, at $66.28 a barrel. Both oil contracts fell by more than $1 on Tuesday to settle at their lowest in five weeks, marking a fourth session of losses. "Prices bounced up on the potential higher tariffs on India but the market is waiting for some sort of a formal implementation as well as which elements in the market are to be affected," said Rystad analyst Janiv Shah. Trump renewed threats to impose higher import tariffs on Indian goods over the country's buying of Russian energy. India, along with China, is a major buyer of Russian oil. "Expectations appear that India may reduce its buying of Russian crude, but I can't see them doing so entirely as they have been making supernormal profits on buying cheap Russian crude," said Ashley Kelty, an analyst at Panmure Liberum. U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff arrived in Moscow on Wednesday on a last-minute mission to seek a breakthrough in the Ukraine war, two days before the expiry of a deadline set by Trump for Russia to agree to peace or face new sanctions. Rystad's Shah said that although the meeting could lead to some concessions, a planned supply increase from the OPEC+ group would offset a potential decline in Russian oil supply. The market was also finding support from a fall in U.S. crude inventories last week, analysts said, as sources citing American Petroleum Institute figures said on Tuesday that stockpiles had fallen by 4.2 million barrels. That compares with a Reuters poll estimate of a 600,000 barrels draw for the week to August 1. "For all that has been thrown the oil market's way geopolitically, Brent futures have struggled to even hold the floor at $70 a barrel for any convincing length of time," said independent analyst Gaurav Sharma. Brent is down 9.4% so far this year, which Sharma said was due to the market remaining well supplied at a time of uncertain demand. That, along with a cloudy macro-economic outlook, made the case for any lasting bullishness in crude unlikely, he added.
