Kyle Manzardo's second career 2-homer game powers Guardians to a win over Rockies
Manzardo hit a two-run shot off Rockies starter Tanner Gordon (2-3) in the third inning and a solo homer against Jimmy Herget in the sixth. His other two-homer game occurred last Sept. 1 against Pittsburgh.
Gabriel Arias added a two-run single and José Ramírez and Bo Naylor scored two runs apiece for the Guardians, who are 3 1/2 games out of the final American League wild-card spot with Thursday's trade deadline looming.
Logan Allen (7-9) worked seven innings and allowed two runs on homers by Jordan Beck and Michael Toglia. The left-hander threw a career-high 113 pitches and matched his longest outing, winning for the second time in his last seven decisions.
TIGERS 12, DIAMONDBACKS 2
DETROIT (AP) — Riley Greene hit one of Detroit's three homers in a six-run fifth inning, and the Tigers went on to beat Arizona.
Greene had three hits, scored three times and drove in three runs. Wenceel Pérez had three hits, stole two bases and scored four times.
The Tigers have won three straight after losing 12 of 13. Arizona has lost six of seven.
The game was tied at 2 before the Tigers scored nine runs in the fifth and sixth innings.
After Brandon Pfaadt (10-7) retired the leadoff hitter in the fifth, Gleyber Torres put the Tigers ahead 3-2 with a homer to right. Kerry Carpenter singled and Greene hit his 26th homer to make it 5-2.
YANKEES 7, RAYS 5
NEW YORK (AP) — Cody Bellinger hit a three-run homer, Anthony Volpe also went deep and New York erased an early deficit a victory over Tampa.
Max Fried recovered from a rough start and threw a career-high 111 pitches in 6 2/3 innings. Volpe delivered a tiebreaking single in the fourth and launched a 452-foot homer to center field in the eighth, the longest of his career.
He also committed two throwing errors at shortstop, the second one on a play that should have ended the game. That gave Tampa Bay another chance before Devin Williams whiffed All-Star Jonathan Aranda with runners at second and third for the final out.
New York pulled within four games of first-place Toronto in the AL East after falling 6 1/2 back last weekend.
Fried (12-4) allowed four runs — two earned — and four hits while surpassing his previous career high of 110 pitches for Atlanta at Philadelphia in September 2022.
DODGERS 5, REDS 4
CINCINNATI (AP) — Will Smith had an RBI double in the ninth inning as Los Angeles rallied for a over Cincinnati.
Shohei Ohtani struck out four times in a major league game for the sixth time, but it was the first time it happened in his first four at-bats. The reigning NL MVP also had a nine-game hitting streak snapped.
The Dodgers got three hits from Freddie Freeman, including a game-tying RBI single in the seventh inning, and Tommy Edman had a two-run homer in the first inning.
Former Cincinnati closer Alexis Díaz (1-0), who was dealt to the Dodgers on May 29, pitched 1 1/3 scoreless innings.
Jake Fraley and Noelvi Marte homered for the Reds, who have dropped their last two games after winning four straight. Fraley had a two-run shot to right in the fourth inning tie it at 2-all and Marte followed two batters later with a drive to right to give Cincinnati the lead.
Michael Conforto drew a walk off Emilio Pagán (2-3) to lead off the ninth. James Outman came on as a pinch-runner and scored when Smith lined a double off the left-field wall with two outs.
Alex Vesia retired the Reds in order in the ninth for his fourth save.
PHILLIES 6, WHITE SOX 3
CHICAGO (AP) — Kyle Schwarber hit a two-run homer, Jesús Luzardo pitched seven sparkling innings and Philadelphia beat Chicago.
Brandon Marsh also hit a two-run drive for Philadelphia, which bounced back nicely after dropping the series opener on Monday night. Schwarber, Marsh and Trea Turner each had two hits.
Luzardo (9-5) allowed two hits, struck out four and walked one.
The White Sox scored three times in the ninth against Daniel Robert. Colson Montgomery had a run-scoring groundout, and Lenyn Sosa connected for a two-run homer.

BALTIMORE (AP) — Adley Rutschman doubled home the tiebreaking run in the bottom of the eighth inning, and Baltimore completed a doubleheader sweep of Toronto.
With Gunnar Henderson on second and one out, Rutschman lifted a drive to right off Jeff Hoffman (6-4) that Nathan Lukes tried to catch against the big wall in right field at Camden Yards. Lukes reached for the ball and initially seemed unsure of where it ended up, only to find it down at his feet.
Andrew Kittredge (2-2) won in relief, and Corbin Martin worked out of a ninth-inning jam for his first career save. The last-place Orioles have dealt away several relievers recently — including Seranthony Domínguez, who was traded to Toronto between games of this doubleheader and pitched a scoreless seventh in the nightcap.
The Blue Jays had men on second and third against Martin with one out, but Lukes struck out looking and Bo Bichette went down swinging.
Baltimore won the opener 16-4.

NEW DELHI (AP) — After discarding hoax applications from Xavi and Pep Guardiola, the All India Football Federation hired Khalid Jamil as the new head coach of the national team on Friday. The AIFF admitted last week that proposed candidacies received from former Barcelona coach Xavi and Manchester City manager Guardiola, which had been disclosed to domestic media two days earlier, were not genuine. Instead, Jamil, one of more than 170 real applicants to coach India, is the first domestic coach to take the position for 13 years and succeeds Manolo Marquez after the Spaniard departed in July after 11 months and just one win. Jamil has won India's top league prize as a player, in 2005, and also as head coach of Aizawl FC in 2017. The 49-year-old took over Indian Super League club Jamshedpur in 2023, taking it to the final of the 2025 Super Cup. The AIFF said in a statement that committee members Shabbir Ali and Armando Colaco had pushed for a local candidate from a three-man shortlist — that also contained Stephen Constantine, the British coach with two previous spells in charge of India, as well as Slovenia's Stefan Tarkovic — in a bid to give Indian coaching a boost. Jamil's major task is to recover from a poor start in qualification for the 2027 Asian Cup, which saw India, ranked No. 133 in the world, collect just one point from the opening two games in its quest to make a third successive appearance at the quadrennial tournament. BULAWAYO, Zimbabwe (AP) — Zimbabwe is facing a big defeat in its first test against New Zealand in almost nine years. New Zealand dismantled the home team's top-order for the second time as Zimbabwe slumped to 114-6 at lunch on Day 3 – still needing 44 runs to avoid an innings defeat. Sean Williams (49) and captain Craig Ervine (22) showed some resilience Friday and combined in a half-century stand before both left-handers perished late in the first session. Williams was brilliantly snapped by wicketkeeper Tom Blundell down the leg side off captain Mitchell Santner's delivery that slanted into the batter. Fast bowler Matt Henry, who grabbed a six-wicket haul in Zimbabwe's below-par first innings score of 149, impressed again with 2-44. He beat the batters with wobble seam and was finally rewarded when he found the edge of Ervine's bat in the penultimate over of the first session and pushed the home team to the brink of defeat. Padres make waves at trade deadline again, unafraid to deal away one of baseball's top prospects
For the second time in four years, A.J. Preller turned the San Diego Padres into the biggest stars of baseball's trade deadline. In 2022, the San Diego general manager snagged slugger Juan Soto, sending James Wood, MacKenzie Gore, CJ Abrams and three others to Washington in an eight-player blockbuster. Then on Thursday, the aggressive Preller pulled off a slightly less seismic version of that deal, trading top prospect Leo De Vries to the Athletics and bringing back closer Mason Miller. Prospects that highly touted are rarely dealt anymore. De Vries, a shortstop, is ranked No. 3 overall by MLB Pipeline. Last year at the deadline, none of Baseball America's top 100 prospects were traded. By the time this year's deadline passed, Preller had traded 14 players and acquired eight. Left-handers JP Sears and Nestor Cortes, first baseman Ryan O'Hearn and outfielder Ramón Laureano were among those the Padres landed in addition to Miller, an All-Star last season who is under team control through 2029. Here's a division-by-division look at this year's deadline: AL East TORONTO leads the division by 3 1/2 games, but the Blue Jays have dropped four of five. They took a gamble, albeit one with some upside, in acquiring 2020 AL Cy Young Award winner Shane Bieber, who has made several rehab starts as he works toward a return from Tommy John surgery. The second-place YANKEES added All-Star relievers David Bednar and Camilo Doval to their bullpen and acquired some more power in third baseman Ryan McMahon. BOSTON's deadline was less inspiring, unless oft-injured right-hander Dustin May can get hot down the stretch. BALTIMORE has shown it can build a strong farm system of position players, but poor pitching has the Orioles in last place this year. They did add some interesting minor league arms over the past week while selling off more than a half-dozen players. TAMPA BAY is 3 1/2 games out of a playoff spot and added reliever Griffin Jax and starting pitcher Adrian Houser, but the Rays also traded away a dependable starter in Zack Littell. Just assume the unorthodox Rays know what they're doing and move on. AL Central KANSAS CITY is a half-game behind CLEVELAND in the standings, and both have about a 13% chance of making the postseason according to FanGraphs. But they went in opposite directions at the deadline. The Royals largely stayed the course, making some under-the-radar additions like outfielder Mike Yastrzemski and left-hander Bailey Falter, while the Guardians — who are three games out of a playoff spot — dealt away Bieber and reliever Paul Sewald. Of course, that's nothing compared to the way MINNESOTA tore apart its roster, trading Jax, infielder Carlos Correa, reliever Jhoan Durán and more than a half-dozen others. DETROIT didn't have a terribly sexy deadline but added starters Charlie Morton and Chris Paddack along with a few bullpen arms. The WHITE SOX held onto outfielder Luis Robert Jr. He has club options for the next two years, so perhaps we haven't heard the last about his potential trade value. AL West SEATTLE threw down the gauntlet Wednesday night by acquiring slugging third baseman Eugenio Suárez. Then HOUSTON answered Thursday by bringing Correa back to the team that drafted him. The difference between these two moves is that Correa is under contract through at least 2028, while Suárez can become a free agent this offseason. But the Mariners can worry about that later. TEXAS, which is five games behind the first-place Astros but just a game behind Seattle for the final wild card, added Merrill Kelly to its rotation. He may have been the best starting pitcher dealt — but pitching hasn't been the problem for the Rangers this year. The ANGELS are the worst team in the American League that didn't make a clear move toward selling. And they didn't do anything likely to move the needle much as they try to make up ground. The ATHLETICS are finally making news for reasons other than their nomadic existence. Add De Vries to an organization that already has two of the game's top rookies in the majors, and the future looks a little brighter. NL East The METS lead PHILADELPHIA by a half-game atop this division, and both teams went big on bullpen help. New York went for quantity with Gregory Soto, Tyler Rogers and Ryan Helsley, while the Phillies made one huge move in adding Duran. MIAMI held onto Sandy Alcantara. Perhaps his value will improve by the offseason — right now he has a 6.36 ERA in his first season back from Tommy John surgery. WASHINGTON sold in fairly predictable fashion, but ATLANTA — currently 16 games under .500 — curiously held onto Raisel Iglesias despite no shortage of teams looking for late-inning relievers. NL Central MILWAUKEE and the CUBS boast the game's two best records, and they appear reasonably satisfied with what they have. Both added some bullpen help. CINCINNATI was more aggressive, acquiring Littell from the Rays and Gold Glove third baseman Ke'Bryan Hayes from PITTSBURGH. Trading Hayes within the division was a gamble by the Pirates, given that he's under team control through 2030, but he has an OPS well under .600 for the second straight year. Pittsburgh is under pressure to improve while Paul Skenes is young and cheap. ST. LOUIS looked like a buyer a month ago, but the Cardinals have lost 17 of 25 and are now a .500 team. NL West SAN DIEGO's flurry of moves didn't draw a particularly brazen response from the DODGERS, who were actually on the prospect-receiving end of the deal that sent May to Boston. SAN FRANCISCO certainly looked like a buyer when it acquired Rafael Devers earlier this season, but now the fading Giants are under .500 and will hope the haul of prospects they received — particularly from the Mets and Yankees for Rogers and Doval — pan out. ARIZONA had two of the best trade chips on the market in Suárez and Kelly and cashed in both. COLORADO's assets were less enticing, but the Rockies did unload McMahon and his contract. ___ AP MLB:
