10 illegals detained in July sent back to Bangladesh
A police team took them to Howrah by train and transferred custody to Border Security Force (BSF), which subsequently handed them to Bangladeshi officials at the border, sources said.
The drive to identify illegals in the city, however, led to widespread panic about Bengali-speaking migrant workers, who fled in droves.

"We did not aim to harass anyone but it was really important to deport Bangladeshis residing here illegally as they could have been a threat for our national security.
All the four holding centres are empty now as all 10 Bangladeshis have been deported," a senior police officer said.
The detention centres were notified on July 18 at four different locations. According to police, the 10 identified as Bangladeshis had several documents confirming their nationality.
Police are now conducting special meetings to reassure migrants from Assam and West Bengal working in housing societies. Residents had met police after employees like caretakers, nannies, maids, cooks and garbage collectors stopped reporting for work, fearing police action. Meetings were held in Laburnum in Sector 28, The Retreat in Sector 41, Escape in Sector 50, Vatika City in Sector 49 and Malibu Town on Sohna Road.

Sonipat Class 12 student dies by suicide; family cites respiratory illness
1 2 Rohtak: A Class 12 student from Sonipat's Patel Nagar died by suicide after allegedly ingesting a poisonous substance at home. According to the family, she was battling a long-standing respiratory ailment and was distressed by her health. She passed away around 4am on Thursday during treatment at a private hospital. The girl was found unconscious on Wednesday afternoon by her younger brother, who returned from school and alerted the parents. At the time, the father, Mukesh, a driver at IMT Kharkhoda, and the mother, an employee of Jindal University, were at work. The family rushed her to the hospital, where she was admitted but succumbed the next morning. Mukesh told police that his daughter often remained upset due to her breathing problems and, in despair, consumed poison at home. Station house officer (SHO) at Civil Lines police station, Savit Kumar, said a probe is under way. The body has been sent for post-mortem examination at the civil hospital and will be handed over to the family thereafter, the SHO said. Police said the exact cause of death will be confirmed in the autopsy report. Kumar added that initial statements from family members pointed to illness-related distress as the trigger for the child taking the extreme step. Punjab shocker: Woman's naked body found in Ropar; 3-year-old daughter missing
CHANDIGARH: A 29-year-old woman, whose naked body was found on August 12 in Kiratpur Sahib in Punjab's Ropar district, has been identified. She was from the remote tribal region of Pangi in Himachal Pradesh's Chamba district. The tribal woman, who was married in Lahaul's Madgram Village, had been missing from Kullu along with her three-year-old daughter since August 4. The family members of the victim said that the child was still missing. According to the family members, the woman had travelled to Kullu for the medical treatment of her daughter but went missing soon afterward. A family member told TOI that they suspected the kidnapping and murder of the woman. The woman spoke to her husband last time on August 4 when she informed him that she was safe and in Manali. However, after the woman's phone went switched off on August 4, her husband also reached Kullu from Lahaul and started searching for her at their relatives' houses. When he couldn't find her and the daughter, the family informed Lahaul Spiti police on August 6 and filed a complaint of kidnapping. Authorities in northern India are investigating the suspected murder of a woman from Himachal Pradesh's Lahaul region after her naked body was found along a roadside in Punjab's Ropar district. Meanwhile, family members of the victim reached Ropar on August 14, a day after they came to know of the body. A police officer said that a postmortem would be conducted after a police team from Udaipur police station in Lahaul Spiti arrives in Ropar. It may be mentioned that on August 12, passersby had discovered the body on the outskirts of Bara Pind village, near Kiratpur Sahib, near the Chandigarh–Manali highway. SAD functionary Bikram Singh Majithia to remain in judicial custody until Aug 28
1 2 Mohali: The judicial custody of senior SAD leader and former minister, Bikram Singh Majithia , was extended by 14 more days until Aug 28, as his earlier remand ended Thursday. His bail plea, pending for the seventh consecutive hearing, was deferred to Aug 18. A court in Mohali heard arguments from both sides for nearly an hour, but failed to reach a conclusion. The bail matter was earlier reserved for a verdict on Aug 14, but no decision was announced. Majithia's wife and MLA, Gunveen Kaur, was present in court during the hearing. A separate plea seeking a change of barrack for Majithia was also heard two days ago. The court reserved its decision on that application until Aug 21.
