IPL 2025: Will Rohit Sharma overcome poor knockout run to take Mumbai Indians one step closer to sixth title?
As
Mumbai Indians
(
MI
) takes on
Gujarat Titans
(GT) in a crucial eliminator clash, a plenty of eyeballs will be on 'Mumbai Cha Raja' (Mumbai's King)
Rohit Sharma
, who will have to play a crucial role with the bat and as a senior leader to take his team one step closer to their sixth IPL title.
MI will be aiming to get another step closer to their record-breaking sixth IPL title as they take on GT at Mullanpur on Friday, with the winner getting to join Punjab Kings (PBKS) in the Qualifier two for a shot at the final against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB).
So far in the season,
Rohit
has had a mixed outing, scoring 329 runs in 13 innings at an average of 27.41, with a strike rate of 147.53. He has scored three half-centuries in the tournament, with the best score of 76*. He is the team's second-highest run-getter behind Ryan Rickelton (388 runs in 14 matches with three fifties) and Suryakumar Yadav (640 runs in 14 innings with five fifties).
However, Rohit's knockout record in the IPL for Deccan Chargers and MI does not inspire a lot of confidence. In 21 outings, he has made just 316 runs at a poor average of 15.80 and a strike rate of 108.96. He has scored two half-centuries, with the best score of 68. Both of his fifties have come in IPL finals, in 2015 against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and in 2020 against Delhi Capitals (DC) in winning efforts.
In his last 10 knockout appearances in the IPL, Rohit has made 207 runs at an average of 20.70, with two half-centuries.
Live Events
Also, Rohit is just 43 runs away from becoming the second batter after RCB's Virat Kohli (8,618 runs) to reach 7,000 IPL runs. Currently in 270 matches and 265 innings, he has made 6,957 runs at an average of 29.60, with a strike rate of 131.83. He has made two centuries and 46 fifties. His best score is 109*.
Will the 'Hitman' overcome this poor knockout run and take his team one step closer to the title?

IPL 2025
A banker by profession , a sportsman by heart, one who eats, sleeps and breathes cricket. Mantra for life - Play each ball on merits & keep the scoreboard moving. The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 season, which concluded on June 3, with Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) clinching their maiden title against Punjab Kings (PBKS), was a showcase of emerging talent. Among the standout performers were uncapped Indian players who made significant impacts, proving their potential to be future stars. In this article, I have picked my uncapped XII, backed by key statistics from the season to highlight why they form an exciting combination. Top order: Explosive young guns 1. Vaibhav Suryavanshi (Rajasthan Royals) At just 14 years old, Vaibhav Suryavanshi became the youngest player to make waves in IPL history. Playing for Rajasthan Royals, his explosive batting was a revelation. In 7 innings, Vaibhav scored 252 runs at an average of 36.00 and a staggering strike rate of 206.50, including a century (101 off 38 balls) against Gujarat Titans and a fifty (57 off 33). His fearless approach, highlighted by a strike rate of more than 200 (highest in IPL 2025 for players facing at least 50 balls), made him a standout opener. Despite a duck against Mumbai Indians, his ability to dominate attacks marked him as a prodigy. 2. Priyansh Arya (Punjab Kings) Priyansh Arya, another dynamic opener, from Punjab Kings, was a run-machine at the top. Playing his first-ever IPL, he amassed 475 runs at a strike rate of 179.24 in 17 innings, including a sensational century off 39 balls. His consistency and ability to accelerate made him a key figure in PBKS campaign, challenging some of the top batters for the Orange Cap. Arya's aggressive stroke play and composure under pressure earned him a spot in this squad, forming a formidable opening pair with Suryavanshi. 3. Ayush Mhatre (Chennai Super Kings) Ayush Mhatre, signed as a mid-season replacement for the injured Ruturaj Gaikwad, emerged as a gem for Chennai Super Kings. Batting at the top, Mhatre impressed with his technique and flair, providing much needed firepower to CSK's batting in the powerplay. He scored 240 runs in 7 innings at an outstanding strike rate of 188.97. Middle order: Stability and firepower 4. Prabhsimran Singh – Wicketkeeper (Punjab Kings) Prabhsimran Singh, the wicketkeeper-batter for Punjab Kings, brought dynamism to the side along with his opening partner Priyansh. Known for his aggressive batting, he amassed 549 runs at a strike rate of 160.52 in 17 innings. As a big-hitting keeper-batter he is a vital cog in this line-up, doubling as the team's gloveman. 5. Nehal Wadhera (Punjab Kings) Nehal Wadhera, acquired by Punjab Kings for ₹4.20 crore, is a reliable middle-order batter. His ability to stabilize innings while accelerating when needed makes him a perfect foil at no.5 for the big-hitters above and below him. Wadhera's versatility and clutch performances enabled him to score 369 runs in 15 innings at strike rate of 145.84. 6. Shashank Singh – Captain (Punjab Kings) Shashank Singh continued to be a revelation for Punjab Kings, delivering match-winning knocks under pressure. His all-round batting prowess, combining power and finesse, made him a key middle-order player. He scored 350 runs at a strike rate of 153.50 with 3 fifties which highlights his impact as a finisher and a dependable batter. All-rounders and bowlers: The game-changers 7. Naman Dhir (Mumbai Indians) Naman Dhir, Mumbai Indians' uncapped all-rounder, added depth to the line-up with his batting and occasional bowling. His aggressive approach and ability to contribute in multiple facets made him an asset. He scored 252 runs in 12 innings at a strike rate of 182.60 which makes him an ideal number seven, offering flexibility as a finisher or stabilizer, if required. 8. Vipraj Nigam (Delhi Capitals) Vipraj Nigam, a bowling all-rounder for Delhi Capitals, impressed with both bat and ball. His ability to contribute in crunch situations earned him recognition as a breakout star. He picked up 11 wickets at an economy rate of 9.12 with his leg-spin while contributing 142 runs in 8 innings at a strike rate of 179.74 lower down the order. The bowling arsenal 9. Digvesh Rathi (Lucknow Super Giants) Digvesh Rathi, the leg-spinner for Lucknow Super Giants, was a standout bowler, claiming 14 wickets in 13 matches at an average of 30.64 and an economy rate of 8.25. His signature celebrations became a fan favourite, but his ability to outfox batters with clever variations was his true strength. Rathi's inclusion as the lead spinner in this XI underscores his impact as one of the best uncapped bowlers in IPL 2025. 10. Anshul Kamboj (Chennai Super Kings) Anshul Kamboj, CSK's right-arm pacer, had a decent campaign, taking 8 wickets in 8 matches at an average of 21.50, with a best of 3-13. His ability to bowl at different stages of the game made him a versatile resource. Kamboj's pace and accuracy earn him a spot in this squad. 11. Yash Dayal (Royal Challengers Bengaluru) Yash Dayal, RCB's left-arm pacer, played a pivotal role in their title-winning campaign. He picked up 13 wickets at an average of 36.15, contributing to RCB's success in crucial matches. His ability to bowl tight lines and take wickets in the middle overs made him a reliable option. Dayal's experience and skill make him the spearhead of this bowling attack. Impact substitute: Ashwani Kumar (Mumbai Indians) Ashwani Kumar, Mumbai Indians' left-arm pacer, was a revelation with the ball. In 7 matches, he took 11 wickets at an average of 21.09 with a best of 4-24 on debut. His ability to swing the ball and deliver in high-pressure situations made him a key component of MI's bowling attack. His inclusion as an impact sub adds depth to the bowling unit, ready to replace a batter or bowler as needed. Why this XII stands out This uncapped XII combines youthful exuberance with match-winning potential. The top order, led by Suryavanshi, Arya, and Mhatre, provides explosive starts, while Prabhsimran, Wadhera, and Shashank offer stability and firepower in the middle. Dhir and Nigam add all-round depth, and the bowling attack—featuring Rathi's spin, Dayal's swing, Kamboj's versatility, and Kumar's pace —is well-rounded. With a blend of high strike rates, wicket-taking ability, and clutch performances, this team could rival any IPL side. This uncapped squad encapsulates the spirit of the tournament, showcasing talent that could soon dominate Indian cricket. As these players continue to grow, their IPL 2025 performances will be remembered as the launchpad for their careers. Rohit Sharma Reveals Father's Reaction On Test Retirement: 'He Was A Little...'
Last Updated: Rohit Sharma revealed his father was a 'little disappointed' with his Test retirement. Senior India batter Rohit Sharma has revealed that his father, Gurunath, was happy but also 'a little disappointed' when he announced his Test retirement last month. Rohit explained that Gurunath has always appreciated red-ball cricket more than ODIs and T20s, and the longest format has always made him more excited — a love that has only gotten stronger seeing his son go up the ranks to the highest level of the sport. Rohit called off his Test career in the first week of May via an announcement on his Instagram story. Only hours before his decision was made public, reports came through claiming that the BCCI selectors had decided to remove him from Test captaincy ahead of the upcoming five-match series against England in the summer. 'My father has seen me playing a lot of cricket with red ball, obviously," Rohit said at the launch of Cheteshwar Pujara's wife Puja Pujara's book 'The Diary of a Cricketer's Wife' in Mumbai. 'So he appreciates red ball cricket a lot. And then, obviously, he was a little disappointed when I announced my retirement. But was happy as well at the same time. But, yeah, that's my father. And he has obviously played a huge role in wherever I am today. Without their help, it never would have been possible," he added. Rohit revealed that his father was even happier with his cameos in Test cricket than his world-record 264 in an ODI against Sri Lanka in November 2014. 'My father worked in a transport company. Like I said, what my mom did, my father was very much involved in sacrificing things so that we could have our life. But my father always, since day one, has been a fan of Test cricket. He doesn't like this new-age cricket. I still remember that day I scored 264 in the ODI. He was like, okay, well played. Well done. There was no excitement from him. It's important to go out there and all that. But even if I used to get good 30s or 40s or 50s or 60s, in Test cricket used to talk to me about it in detail. So that's the kind of love he had for the game," he added. Rohit retired with 4301 runs from 67 Tests. His family was present — and in tears — when a stand named after him at the Wankhede Stadium was unveiled in a grand ceremony on May 17. First Published: June 06, 2025, 13:11 IST

Ex-India Star Picks Out Where India Should Utilise Jasprit Bumrah In England
Former cricketer turned commentator Aakash Chopra weighed in on the limited utilisation of pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah during India's five high-stakes Tests in England, scheduled to begin on June 20 at Headingley. During the announcement of India's squad for the upcoming Test tour of England, chief selector Ajit Agarkar confirmed Bumrah was advised not to contest in consecutive Tests as part of his workload management. The precaution around Bumrah's usage stems from a stress reaction in the back during the fifth Test against Australia in Sydney in January. He missed India's victory campaign in the Champions Trophy and returned to action for the Mumbai Indians in the recently concluded Indian Premier League (IPL). On Wednesday, head coach Gautam Gambhir confirmed that they have yet to take a call on which Tests India will field Bumrah in the playing XI. For Aakash, it will be "tempting" to use Bumrah in "tougher" conditions, especially at "trickier" Birmingham and The Oval (second and fifth Tests), where India would need its "experienced" bowlers to deliver. "It'll be tempting to play him in tougher conditions--because in difficult situations, you want your best players. You'd want Kohli in a crunch chase; similarly, you want Bumrah in bowler-friendly conditions. The Oval and Birmingham will be trickier. The pitches are flatter, and you'll need very experienced bowlers. The call will come down to how Bumrah's body is responding. But if it were up to me, I'd play him where the conditions are toughest--because that's where he gives you the biggest edge," he said on JioHotstar. India will line up without its batting bigwigs, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, who announced their retirement from Test cricket last month. With India short on experience and lining up with a young Shubman Gill as captain, Aaksh feels the expectations around the young team will make the upcoming challenge in England "harder." "Expectations will make the challenge harder. But with a new team, there's some cushioning. People believe this is a team of youngsters, and with that comes a longer rope. If you expect them to win every time, you're not being realistic. The pressure is still there--but it's different from the pressure an experienced team faces, where the only expectation is to win," he added. India squad for five Tests in England: Shubman Gill (C), Rishabh Pant (VC & WK), Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul, Sai Sudharsan, Abhimanyu Easwaran, Karun Nair, Nitish Reddy, Ravindra Jadeja, Dhruv Jurel (WK), Washington Sundar, Shardul Thakur, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohd. Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, Akash Deep, Arshdeep Singh, Kuldeep Yadav. Listen to the latest songs, only on
