KUCHING (May 18): Five representatives from the Youth Movement have been appointed as new Supreme Council Members of Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) following amendments to the party's constitution, said Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.
They newly appointed are Anderson Lah, Sufian Mohat, Martin Ngindang Richard Mullok, Afiq Fikri Brahim, and Lyokarto Sikong.
Abang Johari stated that these appointments provide opportunities for younger generations in the party's top leadership and align with efforts to groom future leaders for political and socioeconomic challenges.
'In our party, we constantly guide the young as future successors for leadership roles. We must train our leaders, especially now that we are facing many new challenges in both political and socioeconomic aspects,' he said at a press conference after chairing the Pre-DUN Meeting and the 2025 PBB Supreme Council Meeting held at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching last night.
Additionally, Abang Johari revealed that the party had recently sent a political secretary to Singapore to observe the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in elections.
'In Singapore, they do use AI, but their regulations emphasise the issue of deepfakes which can be used for slander. So, we are studying what the future might hold due to this advanced technology,' he added.
Regarding the composition of the new Supreme Council, he said the combination of veteran and young leaders is a key approach to ensuring the party's continuity and relevance.
'What we have is a combination of veteran and new faces… PBB leadership must include experienced individuals, as well as those who are digitally savvy and those who are not.
'We bring everyone together in this transition towards the future, because PBB must remain relevant at all times,' he said.
This Supreme Council Meeting is the first held following the recent PBB Convention, where several members were elected while others were newly appointed. abang johari lead PBB supreme council youth

Ensure successful execution of Mitra funding and programmes

LETTER | In August 2024, Malaysian Indian Transformation Unit (Mitra) chairperson P Prabakaran requested an increase in the allocation for the Indian community to RM300 million in Budget 2025, up from the current RM100 million. The Batu MP said the RM100 million allocated annually wasn't enough to effectively fund initiatives aimed at improving the socio-economic status of Malaysian Indians. He highlighted concerns that the amount would be inadequate to meet the diverse needs of the community and drive meaningful upliftment programs. Now given that Mitra has endorsed 45 applications totalling RM40 million, which are awaiting processing at the Prime Minister's Office, why is there a delay in their disbursement? Prabakaran had emphasised that the government needs to boost the budget to adequately support projects that are genuinely transformational for the Indian community. Why are funding initiatives for the Indian community not given higher importance? As June approaches, it is concerning that the Indian community remains unaware of the actual disbursement status of the RM100 million allocated to Mitra this year. It is crucial that these funds are approved and effectively implemented without delay to provide tangible benefits for the Indian community. Mitra opened applications for the Socioeconomic Development Grant Programme for the Malaysian Indian Community 2025 from Oct 15 to Nov 14, 2024. That was about seven months ago. Mitra should undergo a full restructuring. To fulfil her May 23 PKR election's promise to champion the Indian community, Nurul Izzah Anwar faces the critical task of fast-tracking Mitra's initiatives and programmes. She must guarantee the swift approval and implementation of the RM40 million allocated for Phase 1 of Budget 2025, as any further delays will hinder tangible progress and risk the return of unutilised funds to the Finance Ministry by the third quarter of 2025. It's been almost four months since funds amounting to RM40 million for NGOs and training organisations were approved and agreements were signed. Yet, the money remains undistributed, and there's no clear execution plan in sight. This delay hinders vital community works and training initiatives The recommendation is for community development professionals and experts to lead the organisation. This change is crucial to ensure both transparency and effective management within Mitra. DPM Fadillah: Petronas job cuts unrelated to Petros appointment as sole gas aggregator

Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof clarified this when met by reporters at the Majlis Ibadah Korban held at Masjid Darul Husni Warrahmah here today. 'No, it has nothing to do with that. It is actually due to the global situation, particularly the decline and fluctuation in oil prices,' he said. Petronas had earlier stated that its internal budgeting was based on Brent crude prices averaging between US$75 and US$80 per barrel. However, the global benchmark has since fallen and is currently hovering around US$65 per barrel. 'Even for Petronas to remain sustainable, oil prices must be above US$60 per barrel. That is why they have to re-evaluate their position,' Fadillah added. MORE TO COME fadillah yusof gas aggregator job cuts Petronas Petros

Sarawak showcases clean energy leadership at EEC 2025 in UK

Dr Hazland delivers his keynote address. KUCHING (June 6): Sarawak reaffirmed its position as Southeast Asia's clean energy leader during the Energy Export Conference (EEC) 2025 held in Aberdeen, United Kingdom yesterday. Deputy Minister for Energy and Environmental Sustainability Datuk Dr Hazland Abang Hipni unveiled a bold vision for Sarawak's energy future, said a statement issued by his office. In his keynote address, Dr Hazland emphasised that Sarawak's energy transition is anchored in strong policy commitment, sustained investment in innovation and robust regional cooperation. 'Sarawak is proud to be a pioneer in Asean when it comes to clean energy development. Our participation at EEC 2025 reflects our readiness to forge new global partnerships and export low-carbon energy solutions to the world,' he said. Dr Hazland outlined Sarawak's integrated strategy, built on four strategic hubs — renewable energy, natural gas, carbon capture and storage (CCS), and hydrogen — each designed to drive regional resilience and sustainable growth. With over 70 per cent of Sarawak's electricity already generated from hydropower, he said the state is on track to further expand its renewable energy capacity by 2030 and 2035. 'The state is also advancing regional power exports to West Kalimantan, Brunei, Sabah and soon Singapore, cementing its role as the 'Battery of ASEAN',' he added. Sarawak leads Malaysia in natural gas reserves and CCS potential and is pioneering hydrogen development with flagship projects and dedicated legislation to attract global investors, said the statement. Deputy State Secretary (Economic Planning and Development) Dato Sri Dr Muhammad Abdullah Zaidi highlighted the importance of global platforms like EEC in building resilient energy ecosystems. 'Our presence here in Aberdeen is a statement of intent. Sarawak is open for business, open for innovation, and ready to lead in clean energy exports,' he remarked. Meanwhile, Sarawak Energy Berhad shared its long-term sustainability agenda and cross-border grid integration plans, while SEDC Energy highlighted ongoing collaborations with Japanese and South Korean partners to develop hydrogen and ammonia export capabilities. These initiatives underscore Sarawak's commitment to innovation and international partnerships, said the statement. 'Supported by comprehensive policies and strategic roadmaps, Sarawak's clean energy initiatives are unlocking new investment opportunities and creating high-value jobs for a sustainable future. 'With international recognition from the World Economic Forum and upcoming events such as International Energy Week 2025 and SAREF 4.0, Sarawak is inviting global partners to join its journey toward a sustainable and inclusive energy future,' it added. clean energy Dr Hazland Abang Hipni Energy Export Conference sustainability
