Alabama announces probable starters for 2025 Jax College Baseball Classic

Yahoo21-02-2025

Set to travel for the first time this year, the Alabama Crimson Tide baseball team announced the projected starting pitchers for their three games this weekend in the 2025 Jax College Baseball Classic on Thursday afternoon.
According to the Crimson Tide's social media account, Alabama will be starting the same three pitchers from their season opening series last weekend at home against Bradley, headlined by left-hander Zane Adams going Friday night. Adams will start against Coastal Carolina, while right-hander Riley Quick will get the ball against NC State on Saturday, as well as right-hander Bobby Alcock on Sunday against Ohio State.
This past weekend, Adams opened the 2025 season by picking up the win against Bradley by allowing three runs over four innings. Quick and Alcock also impressed by combining for one unearned run across 6.1 innings Saturday and Sunday, while also racking up four and three strikeouts, respectively, as well as each picking up a win.
Alabama's weekend in Jacksonville will begin Friday night against Coastal Carolina, with the game set to begin at 6 p.m. ET.

Rockets reportedly remain optimistic that Steven Adams wants to return

Rockets reportedly remain optimistic that Steven Adams wants to return 'The Rockets are operating under the assumption (Steven) Adams wants to return, and will continue to speak with his representation about a possible extension,' The Athletic's Kelly Iko reports. In early May, Rockets general manager Rafael Stone said 'every indication' he has is that veteran center Steven Adams wants to return to Houston. Now 31 years old, Adams just finished out the final season of his previous contract, though the Rockets have Bird rights to help sign him to a new deal. Over a month later, and with the June 30 opening of the NBA's free agency negotiations about three weeks away, the Rockets reportedly remain optimistic that Adams' position hasn't changed. Per Kelly Iko of The Athletic: The Rockets are operating under the assumption Adams wants to return — and will continue to speak with his representation about a possible extension, team sources said. It's difficult to project what Adams' market value might be. On the one hand, his traditional statistics in the regular season were rather pedestrian. In an average of 13.7 minutes over 58 games, Adams averaged 3.9 points (54.5% FG) and 5.6 rebounds for the Rockets. Both minutes and appearances were limited in his first season back after undergoing knee surgery in late 2023. But even with the relatively low minutes totals, Adams' impact-based statistics were consistently excellent. And in the playoffs, with the Rockets having gradually built up Adams' health and stamina over the regular season, Houston turned the big man loose. In seven first-round games against the Golden State Warriors, Adams averaged 5.7 points (60.0% FG), 6.6 rebounds, and 1.1 blocks in 22.1 minutes per game. Should Adams want a job as a full-time starting center in the NBA, the Rockets probably can't offer that, since they have an All-Star in Alperen Sengun ahead of Adams on the depth chart. But it's unclear if such an offer will be available when considering Adams' age, injury history, and minutes totals from the 2024-25 regular season. Furthermore, even if that type of bid is made, Adams might prefer to stay in a situation where his body can be more easily load managed. With more than a decade of NBA wear-and-tear, the presence of Sengun can prevent Adams from being overly extended. Furthermore, the ability of Sengun and Adams to play together in 'double big' lineups means that even if Adams is the backup center in name, he has a path to potentially playing more minutes — especially in higher-leverage games and in the playoffs — than most backup centers. That type of arrangement could be appealing to a veteran entering his age-32 season. So, too, could Houston's status as the team with the fourth-best record (52-30) in the NBA. Even if a team was willing and able to offer Adams both a starting role and a significant salary increase, it might not be appealing for Adams to go to a losing team at this stage of his career. Adams made $12.6 million this season, and the NBA's non-taxpayer mid-level exception (NT-MLE) this offseason is expected to be in the range of a $14.1-million starting salary. Many teams have access to the NT-MLE, so a contract in that general annual vicinity would seem realistic. And from Houston's perspective, it's unlikely they would ask or expect Adams to take a paycut after an elite playoff performance. The primary questions would seem to be: If the offers are financially comparable, does Adams want to stay in Houston? Does any team with significant space beneath the 2025-26 salary cap (there aren't many) potentially bid above the NT-MLE on Adams? If so, would Houston be willing to use its Bird rights to go even higher and match? Is there any medical red flag on Adams, regarding his surgically repaired knee, that might make Houston less likely to offer the same contract length as another team? There are enough questions that an Adams return can't be viewed as inevitable. But, all indications thus far are positive, and the Bird rights available to Stone and the Rockets will allow Houston to be as financially competitive as it wants. In his article, Iko writes that getting Adams back is arguably the top offseason priority for Stone and the Rockets. However, he cautions that it is not inevitable. 'Because of his two-way production, particularly his elite offensive rebounding, the possibility of Adams being lured away by a playoff team exists,' Iko writes. 'Adams would be a natural fit for teams such as San Antonio, New York, Indiana, and both Los Angeles organizations (Lakers and Clippers).' Those teams are generally not expected to have salary cap room, so there wouldn't seem to be a financial incentive for Adams to leave Houston for one of them. It simply depends on what he wants from a basketball perspective. Teams can officially engage in negotiations with their own free agents when the 2025 NBA Finals conclude, which should be within the next one to two weeks. That could be the window for the Rockets to ideally reach an agreement with Adams that could prevent him from hitting the open market on June 30. Should Adams explore leaving in free agency, signing Milwaukee Bucks center Brook Lopez could become a backup plan for the Rockets, Iko reports. However, the preference seems to be staying the course and avoiding that scenario altogether. More: Report: If Steven Adams leaves in free agency, Rockets eyeing Brook Lopez as backup plan

Connect the terms Find the hidden link between sports terms T2 - Tennessee 0, Arkansas 0 No score yet early in the hotly-anticipated matchup between defending national champion Tennessee and powerhouse SEC rival Arkansas. Both starters, the Volunteers' Marcus Phillips and the Razorbacks' Zach Root, handled business in the first inning. B7 - Auburn 1, Coastal Carolina 1 Coastal Carolina has broken through! Walker Mitchell's RBI single plates Sebastian Alexander and we're tied late with the Chanticleers a win away from the Men's College World Series. Imagn Images LSU and West Virginia both have seven hits. LSU leads 16-5 in the top of the seventh, thanks in large part to the 12 free bases (seven walks and five HBPs) issued by the Mountaineers' pitching staff. Ten of those 12 runners have scored. Courtesy of Tennessee Athletics The defending champion Vols vs. the tournament favorite Razorbacks (or they should be anyway). They're up next at 5 p.m. ET on ESPN. What a matchup. T7 - LSU 16, West Virginia 5 LSU has its second grand slam of the day, this one from Josh Pearson, and this game is officially out of hand. It looked for a minute like the Mountaineers were going to try to mount a rally. The Tigers, however, put an end to that. B5 - Auburn 1, Coastal Carolina Down a game in the series after losing in extra innings last night, the Tigers are clinging to a one-run lead. Clinging indeed. The Chanticleers loaded the bases with no outs in the fifth but couldn't get any runners home. Cade Fisher got a strikeout, a popout on the infield and another strikeout to end the inning, and the Tigers still lead. Courtesy of Arkansas Athletics This is one of the most hyped Super Regionals matchups since the tournament introduced this format in 1999. Tennessee is the No. 14 overall seed but is clearly one of the most talented teams in the nation. The Vols have been undone this year by poor defense at times and the inability to find the right pitching combination in Game 3s of their weekend series — they lost the third game in six of their final seven SEC series. Arkansas' roster is elite, with great starting pitching, tons of options in the bullpen and an offense that led the SEC in runs scored (by 41!) in league games. We won't get the Liam Doyle vs. Zach Root pitching matchup in Game 1 since the Vols are giving their ace an extra day of rest, but No. 2 starter Marcus Phillips is very capable of slowing down the Hogs offense. One prediction I feel good about: There will be some fireworks at some point in this series. Another prediction: Arkansas in 3 Imagn Images The Blue Devils take down Murray State 7-4 in Game 1 of their series. The Blue Devils will clinch a trip to Omaha for the College World Series with a win on Sunday. That game is scheduled for noon. Imagn Images B8 - Duke 7, Murray State 4 Murray State has outhit Duke 8-to-5 and has had a runner on base in all but one inning but trails Duke 7-4 in the bottom of the eighth. The Racers have left nine men on base. B5 - LSU 7, West Virginia 1 The Tigers have used the long ball to take control of this one after trailing early. Steven Milam's grand slam has Alex Box Stadium ROCKING. Drama in Chapel Hill. Arizona forces a Game 3 by defeating North Carolina 10-8 in Game 2 of the Chapel Hill Regional. The Wildcats surged ahead with four runs in the bottom of the seventh and then held on when ace reliever Tony Pluta — who threw a career-high 52 pitches — worked around a leadoff single in the top of the ninth to retire the next three Tar Heels. Imagn Images We're going to have at least two Game 3s tomorrow. Arizona's comeback is complete as it holds off North Carolina 10-8. The two teams will play Game 3 tomorrow with the game time yet to be determined. What a turnaround from yesterday's 10-8 whitewash. Louisville and Miami are also headed for a Game 3. T5 - LSU 3, West Virginia 1 The Tigers finally get their offense going with a three-run home run by Derek Curiel. LSU's offense has been spotty all season, but the Tigers needed that one to get some life into their stadium. B6 - Duke 6, Murray State 2 Kyle Johnson does it again with a double in the sixth to score another run. Johnson has two doubles and a home run in three at-bats, and he has driven in five runs. What a day for a player who is only in the lineup because of a suspension. He really has stepped up today for Duke. Imagn Images B7 - Arizona 10, North Carolina 8 The Wildcats have answered the Tar Heels' four runs in the top of the seventh with four of their own in the bottom of the seventh, and the Wildcats are six outs from a Game 3 tomorrow. Will the Heels respond again? This game is bonkers. Imagn Images B7 - North Carolina 8, Arizona 8 And the Wildcats have shown that fight again as they've scored two runs in the seventh to tie the game up again. Have to mention again how impressed I am with the Wildcats' fight in Game 2 after being destroyed in Game 1. Coastal Carolina and Auburn are up next at 3 p.m. ET on ESPN2. The Chanticleers will book their trip to Omaha with a win after beating the Tigers in extra innings in Game 1 after a nearly two-hour weather delay. Imagn Images B7 - North Carolina 8, Arizona 6 The Tar Heels are nine outs from Omaha, and now they have the lead again after scoring four runs in the top of the seventh inning. Arizona will have to show some more fight (which they've shown all day) to get this series to a Game 3. B4 - Duke 4, Murray State 2 Kyle Johnson, again! The pitcher/outfielder smacked a two-run double with two outs in the bottom of the fourth to give Duke a 4-2 lead over Murray State. Johnson has Duke's only two hits and all four RBIs.

Connect the terms Find the hidden link between sports terms B1 - Oregon State 1, Florida State 0 The Beavers need one more win to head to Omaha for the College World Series, and they have gotten off to a good start to get that done. Oregon State scored a run in the top of the first inning on a single by Wilson Weber. That's not a good sign for the Seminoles. They need to respond immediately. Oregon State won in dramatic, comeback, walk-off fashion in Game 1, and if they win today, it's headed to Omaha. Game 2 is next at 9 p.m. ET on ESPN2 B4 - UCLA 3, UTSA 2 UTSA jumped out on top of this game with a pair of single runs in the first and second innings, but the host Bruins have responded with three straight runs to take the lead. UCLA got two runs in the third and added a third in the fourth to grad the lead. Sunday will feature at least two Game 3, and the game times/TV for those matchups have been set: Arizona at North Carolina, Noon (ESPN2) Miami at Louisville, Noon (ESPN) Imagn Images This wasn't a must-win for Arkansas ... but it was very, very important for the Razorbacks to win the opener of the Fayetteville Super Regional (beating Tennessee 4-3). Tennessee will have ace Liam Doyle on the mound tomorrow — giving the Vols the advantage in Game 2 — but the Hogs would figure to have the edge if this series gets to a third game. Tennessee lost Game 3 in six of its final seven SEC series. Former Tennessee football coach Lane Kiffin ... UTSA pulled off one of the many big upsets last week, beating No. 2 Texas twice, and they'll have to win on the road again against the Bruins. They're up at 7 p.m. ET on ESPNU. T6 - Arkansas 3, Tennessee 2 This game is giving us exactly what we were looking and hoping for. These are two talented and dynamic teams, and they're showing that off here in Game 1. Arkansas matches Tennessee's two-run home run with one of its own: from Ryder Helfrick. Arkansas ace Zach Root finally has yielded his first hit of the game to Tennessee — and he trails in the top of the fifth. Dean Curley's shot to left-center field on a 3-2 breaking ball followed up an error by Arkansas first baseman Reese Robinett to give the Vols a base runner. It's 2-1 Tennessee in a game that has seen Arkansas foiled on several scoring opportunities. UCLA is back in the national spotlight after missing the NCAA Tournament the previous two seasons. John Savage's team shared the Big Ten title with Oregon and cruised through the Los Angeles Regional last week with relative ease. The Bruins host the upstart UTSA Roadrunners, who waltzed into Disch-Falk Stadium last weekend and beat Texas, the No. 2 overall seed, twice. This is a balanced team that led the AAC in most of the key offensive statistics and ranked third in ERA. The player to watch in this series is UCLA shortstop Roch Cholowsky, who is hitting .370 with 23 home runs and 72 RBIs. Cholowsky was also a three-star quarterback recruit coming out of Hamilton High in Chandler, Ariz. This pick is part a belief in UTSA and part an unwillingness to pick all favorites: UTSA in 3 Imagn Images Tennessee is flirting with disaster but trails Arkansas by just one run, 1-0, through four innings. The Razorbacks have had eight baserunners (six hits, one walk, one hit by pitch) but have hit into two double plays, and they scored their only run on a wild pitch. Coastal Carolina, which leads the nation with 53 wins, has earned the first spot into Omaha for the College World Series. The Chanticleers swept Auburn, winning 4-1 today, to head back to Omaha. Remember, this program won it all in 2016, so don't ever doubt Coastal Carolina, which was wildly underseeded for this tournament. Imagn Images Tony Vitello is a bit late for his in-game interview with the ESPN crew in the top of the fourth. When it wraps up he says: 'Sorry for the delay. I have a small bladder.' Imagn Images The LSU Tigers beat West Virginia 16-9 in the first game of their series. Game 2 will be played at 6 p.m. on Sunday and will be broadcast by ESPN2. The Tigers and Mountaineers combined for seven home runs today, including five by LSU. Imagn Images B8 - Coastal Carolina 3, Auburn 1 Coastal is three outs away from clinching the first berth in this year's College World Series. The Chanticleers scored three in the seventh to take the lead, and they're batting now in the eighth, trying to pad their lead. Then, they'll look to shut the door on the Tigers and their season in the ninth. Arkansas' Cam Kozeal with terrific instincts and hustle to steal the first run of the game against Tennessee, on a Marcus Phillips pitch that just got away from catcher Stone Lawless. By the time Lawless gathered the ball and started turning back toward home, Kozeal was sliding. That's as close as Vanderbilt will get to bragging rights on Tennessee this weekend (Kozeal was a Commodores freshman last season). B7 - Coastal Carolina 2, Auburn 1 The Chanticleers keep their inning going and have the lead with an unearned run on an error. The Tigers are going back to the bullpen to try to limit the damage. T2 - Tennessee 0, Arkansas 0 No score yet early in the hotly-anticipated matchup between defending national champion Tennessee and powerhouse SEC rival Arkansas.
