But SunSport understands a new offer will be presented to Russell before next month's Belgium Grand Prix.
Russell believes that team-mate Kimi Antonelli would be the driver to make way for Verstappen in the unlikely event that the Dutchman is to leave Red Bull for Mercedes.
Ahead of Sunday's British GP at Silverstone, Russell said: 'I want to continue with Mercedes into the future. Toto has never let me down, has always given me his word.
'He's also got to do what's right for his team, which includes me and the thousands of people who work for Mercedes.

'For me it's nothing to worry about, as I don't think I'll be going anywhere, and whoever my team-mate is doesn't concern me either, so I'll just focus on the driving.
'It'll happen when the time is right. I expect in the next couple of weeks. But we'll need to wait and see.
'There hasn't been a lack of interest, let's say. But I've been focused on my side, I am loyal to Mercedes.
'The likelihood I'm not at Mercedes next year is exceptionally low.'

Crisis-hit Leicester consider shock move for recently-sacked Championship manager after axing Ruud van Nistelrooy

Danny Rohl, 36, who is set to leave troubled Sheffield Wednesday, is another option. Wilder has a good record at Championship level but his best work has always been at boyhood club United. READ MORE IN FOOTBALL He was less successful at Middlesbrough and Watford but is still attractive to any clubs chasing promotion. The Dutchman managed just four wins in 25 games, losing 18 times. And Most read in Championship BEST FREE BETS AND BETTING SIGN UP OFFERS He told SunSport: 'Most clubs are prepared for the worst now. 'They sack their manager in the morning and by the afternoon they've got someone else in charge. Emotional Leicester fans say 'delete this' as club share pics of Jamie Vardy packing his things into a cardboard box 'But it will be hard for Leicester to get someone in with a potential points deduction hanging over the club. 'Any new manager will be conscious of that and won't want to commit until they know what they're dealing with. 'The fans will be expecting an early appointment, given the length of time the board must have known Ruud was going. 'But I wouldn't be too hasty with a new appointment. 'I'd be really thorough because they MUST get this appointment right. 'They obviously went through two major managerial changes last season, and they won't want to go through that again. 'They'll want a manager who is hopefully going to be there for quite a while. So I wouldn't be rushing too much into it if I was them."

Ostapenko lifts up skirt in angry exchange with Wimbledon umpire over outfit
Jelena Ostapenko was left bemused when she faced questions about her attire while gearing up for a doubles match at Wimbledon. As Ostapenko prepared with her partner Hsieh Su-wei for their second-round encounter against Marta Kostyuk and Elena-Gabriela Ruse, chair umpire Jamie Crowson seemed to call her outfit into question during their warm-up. Upon being approached by Crowson and exchanging a few words, the Latvian player expressed frustration, throwing her hands out and even lifting her skirt to show that she was sporting green undershorts which conform to the stringent all-white dress code of Wimbledon. Wimbledon enforces a strict all-white dress code, but did change their rules ahead of the 2023 tournament to allow female players to wear dark undershorts to alleviate a potential source of anxiety when they have their periods. "We are committed to supporting the players and listening to their feedback as to how they can perform at their best," All England Club Chief Executive Sally Bolton said at the time. "I'm pleased to confirm that, following consultation with players and representatives of several stakeholder groups, the Committee of Management has taken the decision to update the white clothing rule at Wimbledon. "This means that from next year, women and girls competing at The Championships will have the option of wearing coloured undershorts if they choose. It is our hope that this rule adjustment will help players focus purely on their performance by relieving a potential source of anxiety." Ostapenko and Hsieh went on to beat Kostyuk and Ruse 5-7 6-2 6-2 and will now take on Ekaterina Alexandrova and Zhang Shuai in the third round on Sunday. Ostapenko has already been knocked out of the women's singles and mixed doubles events, losing 7-5, 2-6, 6-2 to Brit Sonay Kartal in the first round on Monday. Ostapenko was also eliminated in the second round of the mixed doubles after losing to Taylor Townsend and Evan King. The 28-year-old is a Grand Slam singles champion, having won the French Open back in 2017 when she defeated Simona Halep 4–6, 6–4, 6–3 in the final. She also reached the final four at Wimbledon in 2018, losing to eventual winner Angelique Kerber in the semi-finals.
