Bivol vacates WBC title to pursue Beterbiev trilogy

BBC News08-04-2025

Dmitry Bivol has relinquished his WBC light-heavyweight world title after just six weeks as undisputed champion in order to pursue a third fight against Artur Beterbiev. The Russian defeated Beterbiev on 23 February to gain revenge over his fiercest rival and claim the WBA, WBC, WBO and IBF world titles.WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman confirmed Bivol had vacated the title because the 34-year-old is seeking another fight against his fellow Russian Beterbiev. The first two fights between Bivol and 40-year-old Beterbiev had been for the undisputed title. But in the wake of Bivol's victory, the WBC had ordered him to fight its top contender David Benavidez next and a purse bid was scheduled for Tuesday. American fighter Benavidez, who is unbeaten in 30 bouts, has been upgraded to world champion status.Liverpool's Callum Smith will be among those vying to fight Benavidez after he beat top contender Joshua Buatsi in February.

Chris Wilder 'set to be sacked' by Sheffield United ahead of crunch meeting

Sheffield United missed out on promotion to the Premier League after losing the Championship play-off final and could now be about to make a shock managerial change Chris Wilder is said to be on the verge of being sacked by Sheffield United just weeks after missing out on promotion to the Premier League in the Championship play-off final. Wilder, 57, was unable to guide his boyhood club back to the Premier League at the first time of asking following relegation from the top-flight in the 2023-24 campaign. After missing out on automatic promotion, the Blades were stunned by Sunderland at Wembley to leave Wilder and Co facing up to another Championship campaign. ‌ However, it has now emerged that Wilder's future is in doubt ahead of a pivotal meeting at Bramall Lane. ‌ Various reports have confirmed that Sheffield United's powerbrokers will meet to discuss Wilder's future at a recruitment meeting on Thursday. It's said that Wilder could even be sacked on the same day, despite signing a new contract with the Blades last season. The club's new American-based owners, COH Sports, are 'keen' to make a fresh appointment ahead of the 2025-26 campaign, according to The Telegraph, who expect Wilder to be shown the door. Sheffield United's new owners have wasted little time in stamping their authority on the club, implementing a new AI tool to aid their recruitment strategy. Just this week the club announced the signing of Ehije Ukaki from Botev Plovdiv. Wilder confirmed that the 20-year-old winger was signed from the Bulgarian outfit after being identified by the club's 'data driven strategy'. ‌ Join the debate! Do you think Sheffield United should sack Wilder? Let us know here He told the club's official website: "Ehije is a player who has been identified through our data driven strategy and is someone we're looking forward to developing. "He's an emerging talent, still only 20, who has enjoyed some experience of European football early in his career, so there's a base to work from." Wilder re-joined Sheffield United for a second spell in December 2023 but was unable to keep them in the Premier League. He had them in the upper echelons of the Championship for the majority of last season, though, only for the Blades to finish 3rd on 90 points behind Leeds United and Burnley.

So Paul - who beat Tyson over eight shorter two minute rounds - has spent the last six months trimming back down the the 14st 4lb cruiserweight limit. He said: "It was just too much and my body wasn't made for it and even when I got into the ring I just felt too fat. "So cruiserweight is definitely the perfect weight for me." Paul's fight with Tyson was as scrutinised due to the age gap as it was commercially successful - with over 100 MILLION watching on Netflix. And the American looked to add to the streaming home run by entering shock talks to face Canelo Alvarez, 34, on May 3 in Las Vegas. But Canelo pulled out of the deal to instead sign with Saudi boxing chief Turki Alalshikh - agreeing a four-bout contract. 5 CASINO SPECIAL - BEST CASINO BONUSES FROM £10 DEPOSITS He beat William Scull, 32, in Riyadh in May to reclaim the undisputed super-middleweight titles to defend against Terence Crawford, 37, in their September 13 super-fight. So Paul, 28, turned his attention to an exhibition bout against WBA lightweight champion Gervonta Davis, 30. Jake Paul leaks 's***-talking' private messages with Anthony Joshua goading him about being KO'd as trash talk ramps up But Davis is now set to rematch Lamont Roach, 29, in August after their controversial New York draw in March. Paul finally called upon ex-middleweight world champ Julio Cesar Chavez Jr, 39, back down at his natural and more comfortable weight. He said ahead of the June 28 DAZN PPV: "I wanted the hardest and the biggest fights, which was first Canelo then Gervonta fell through. "And then at any given point in time we're negotiating or talking with five to six fighters to see who's down and ready to fight and making a date happen. "And after Canelo and Gervonta, we were talking to multiple people and Chavez was the one to step up, that made sense for me to stay active and get a fight in June. "So really it's just the long line and I just need more time but I'm gonna get to all of these names when the stars aligned." 5 Jake Paul faces Julio Cesar Chavez Jr next Credit: Reuters
