Newport cup rotation gives boss a welcome headache
The Championship side won Tuesday night's EFL Cup tie at Rodney Parade 1-0 thanks to Ryan Leonard's thumping finish on the hour.
Hughes tasted defeat for the first time since taking the reins but the Exiles boss was pleased with how his team performed after making eight changes to the XI that beat Crawley Town 2-1 in League Two.
"The lads who started deserved to start because of the way that they have trained continuously," he said. "They have come on in games and impacted them.
"The most telling factor for us as a group was that nothing really changed. I am disappointed to have lost but I am really pleased, some of the football in the first 30 minutes was outstanding."
Debutant goalkeeper Jordan Wright pulled off three excellent saves and Manchester United loanee Habeeb Ogunneye impressed on his first start.
Left wing-back Anthony Glennon, centre-back Cameron Evans and forward Bobby Kamwa also came into the XI for the first time this season after being regulars in the 2024-25 campaign.
"The hard part has been telling people they haven't been starting because of the way that they have gone about it," said Hughes. "They showed against Millwall the mentality and collectiveness of the group."
Newport now face the long trip to Grimsby on Saturday (15:00 BST), which is followed by a home Tuesday fixture against Salford and then another against Milton Keynes Dons.
Hughes and his management team are making it clear to the squad that rotation is necessary in a hectic start to the campaign.
"What they have to accept is that there are 46 league games, although unfortunately not another Carabao Cup game," he said.
"There will be in excess of 50 games this season and everybody will play significant amounts of football.
"That's the message to the group, we need everybody to stick together and support each other, show no disappointment if you don't start but come on to show and illustrate your ability. Everybody has done that."

Bradford cricket club unveils mural inspired by 140-year long history
A MURAL celebrating more than 100 years of a cricket club's history has been unveiled. Founded in 1905, Bowling Old Lane Cricket Club is home to a pitch once graced by legends of the sport. Many famous names have been on the Old Lane pitch, including Pakistani legend Mohammed Yousuf and former England Test opener Bill Athey. Their early 20th century superstars include all-rounder Charles Grimshaw and World War One veteran Fred Root. The mural at Bowling Old Lane Cricket Club in Bradford honours different generations of players (Image: Newsquest) Beyond its claims to fame, generations of families have played sport at the club. The club's past, present and future has been brought together in a new mural. It is welcoming in what it hopes will be a new era for the sport as the club invites more women and people from all backgrounds to play. Kammy Siddique, first XI Captain and vice chair of the club, said: 'At the start of the season we were looking at how we would celebrate our 140 years as a club. It just felt it was fitting to honour our past, our heritage, and we're on a bit of a crest of a wave in terms of our future stuff. The mural at Bowling Old Lane Cricket Club (Image: Newsquest) "We wanted to bring that all together. Describing the process of gathering 140 years worth of information, he said: 'A lot of time on the internet, time spent with some of the past players and patrons from previous years. The big thing was not to lose the history and for a club that's got some older members and volunteers not to lose that. The mural honours different generations of players (Image: Newsquest) 'We thought we'd honour individuals and make sure they were on the wall. 'What we are is more than a cricket club. We're a community club and that includes many families and people from different backgrounds. 'Aside from cricket we do a food parcels project, we do disabilities sports, we've got womens sessions - there's loads of stuff going on that's away from just the typical men in whites playing on a Saturday. The mural is unveiled at Bowling Old Lane Cricket Club (Image: Newsquest) 'It's a part of what we do now. "What I've seen in my personal journey here and being a youth worker, it's a great vehicle for young people to learn discipline, learn about teams and family life, working together." The club has a womens team, under 18s team including some people who might never have tried cricket, an over 50s team that play at a Yorkshire level, and visually impaired team. Looking at the future, Kammy said: 'It's somewhere for everyone." The mural was made possible through funding from The Leap.

Harry Kane torn on what his favorite Bayern Munich goal has been so far
Ever since joining Bayern Munich from Tottenham Hotspur in the summer of 2023, Harry Kane has gone on to tally 85 goals and 26 assists from a total of 96 appearances across all competitions. He finally broke the club title duck last season by winning the Bundesliga title with Bayern and securing a second consecutive Torjägerkanone after finishing with 26 league goals. Despite have lost out to what was an incredibly impressive Bayer Leverkusen side under Xabi Alonso in the 2023/24 season, Kane had one of the best scoring seasons of his life, having netted 36 league goals and 44 across all competitions. Case in point, Kane has had absolutely zero difficulty transitioning from the Premier League to the Bundesliga and he has casually set scoring records in his first two seasons with the German Rekordmeister, though he's still out for Robert Lewandowski's single season Bundesliga record of 41 goals. Of the 85 goals that Kane has scored for Bayern, there have been some absolute beauties as well as match winners, momentum shifters, and goals with his right foot, left foot, and head. On the striker's Cleats Club app (via @iMiaSanMia), the England skipper answered the question of what his favorite Bayern goal is thus far that he's scored, and the striker couldn't decidec from two that stick out from the rest for him. 'I'd say it's between two. The halfway line goal against Darmstadt and my third goal against Augsburg, where Leon played it over the top and I took my touch in the air and then headed it home. Technically it was probably one of the best goals I've scored in my career. So yeah probably between these two,' Kane explained. The pair of goals are certainly worthy of being in his top 10 highlight reel, at least for his Bayern career so far, and they'll both go down in the annals of Bundesliga history. The halfway goal scored against Darmstadt in the 2023/24 season rivals David Beckham's infamous half-field strike against Wimbledon back in 1996, but Kane was, without a trace of doubt, several steps further back than Beckham was when he struck the ball. At the tie, Kane's wonder strike was one of three that he scored in Bayern's 8-0 routing of Darmstadt, who are back in the Bundesliga this season. For the goal against Augsburg from last season, Kane essentially did his best impression of the Bundesliga logo to take a touch to control the ball before calmly heading it past keeper Nediljko Labrović. What made that goal all the more special for Kane was that it completed his hat-trick on that particular evening.

"After my pulmonary embolism, no one wanted to sign me, but then LeBron called my agent" - Mirza Teletovic revealed a gentleman gesture by LeBron James
"After my pulmonary embolism, no one wanted to sign me, but then LeBron called my agent" - Mirza Teletovic revealed a gentleman gesture by LeBron James originally appeared on Basketball Network. In the summer of 2012, the Brooklyn Nets brought in the Bosnian national team player Mirza Teletovic. Arguably, the most elite player in the EuroLeague had just come off the best season of his career, averaging 21.7 points and 6.0 rebounds while shooting an incredible 43.7 percent from three-point range. Standing at 6-foot-9, Teletovic moved very well on the court for his size, and his shooting hand was one of the best in Europe at the time. As the league was slowly entering the pace and space era, Teletovic seemed like a perfect fit as a stretch four. Although he had a few solid seasons in the league, fans will mostly remember him for his altercation with LeBron James. Teletovic confronted LeBron During the 2013-14 season, in the second quarter of one regular-season game, after a hard foul by Teletovic as LeBron drove to the basket, tensions flared when Teletovic stood his ground and stared down the four-time MVP. LeBron, visibly annoyed, confronted him, but the situation was quickly defused by teammates and referees. Even though the conflict ended there, LeBron didn't hold it against him and actually made an incredible gesture toward Teletovic during perhaps the toughest moments of his life. "Few people know who King James really is. After my pulmonary embolism, when no one wanted to sign me, he called my agent and offered for me to play with him in Cleveland," Teletovic commented on the NBA Hoopster Instagram profile. Teletovic never had an easy life The trade eventually didn't happen, but LeBron showed a phenomenal gesture despite the fact that he could have held a grudge against Teletovic for the on-court roughness. Still, what happens on the court stays on the court in the heat of the battle and LeBron's gesture is an excellent example of that. On the other hand, Teletovic never had an easy life. His country was at war for its independence when he was just a child. Years later, Teletovic, who went undrafted, shared his story about the journey before the NBA. "You don't know the situation at that time. You don't even have shoes. The basketball court is like 300 meters from my house. And all my friends and me are playing and then you hear the sirens like the grenades start falling down and just run to your house and hide. If I have to die, I die. For basketball, I will do anything," he recalled. LeBron is one of the greatest ever, both on and off the court The love and dedication Teletovic had for the game, the same game that brought him joy as a child and served as an escape from the harsh reality he faced, is nothing short of remarkable. Basketball was always his top priority throughout his career, and in the end, it rewarded him with a beautiful career in which he went toe to toe with some of the best to ever lace them up. In the end, Mirza overcame all of life's obstacles and now enjoys a well-deserved retirement. As for LeBron, this gesture confirmed that he is one of the greatest ever, both on and off the story was originally reported by Basketball Network on Aug 15, 2025, where it first appeared.
