Newport cup rotation gives boss a welcome headache
The Championship side won Tuesday night's EFL Cup tie at Rodney Parade 1-0 thanks to Ryan Leonard's thumping finish on the hour.
Hughes tasted defeat for the first time since taking the reins but the Exiles boss was pleased with how his team performed after making eight changes to the XI that beat Crawley Town 2-1 in League Two.
"The lads who started deserved to start because of the way that they have trained continuously," he said. "They have come on in games and impacted them.
"The most telling factor for us as a group was that nothing really changed. I am disappointed to have lost but I am really pleased, some of the football in the first 30 minutes was outstanding."
Debutant goalkeeper Jordan Wright pulled off three excellent saves and Manchester United loanee Habeeb Ogunneye impressed on his first start.
Left wing-back Anthony Glennon, centre-back Cameron Evans and forward Bobby Kamwa also came into the XI for the first time this season after being regulars in the 2024-25 campaign.
"The hard part has been telling people they haven't been starting because of the way that they have gone about it," said Hughes. "They showed against Millwall the mentality and collectiveness of the group."
Newport now face the long trip to Grimsby on Saturday (15:00 BST), which is followed by a home Tuesday fixture against Salford and then another against Milton Keynes Dons.
Hughes and his management team are making it clear to the squad that rotation is necessary in a hectic start to the campaign.
"What they have to accept is that there are 46 league games, although unfortunately not another Carabao Cup game," he said.
"There will be in excess of 50 games this season and everybody will play significant amounts of football.
"That's the message to the group, we need everybody to stick together and support each other, show no disappointment if you don't start but come on to show and illustrate your ability. Everybody has done that."

Bradford cricket club unveils mural inspired by 140-year long history
A MURAL celebrating more than 100 years of a cricket club's history has been unveiled. Founded in 1905, Bowling Old Lane Cricket Club is home to a pitch once graced by legends of the sport. Many famous names have been on the Old Lane pitch, including Pakistani legend Mohammed Yousuf and former England Test opener Bill Athey. Their early 20th century superstars include all-rounder Charles Grimshaw and World War One veteran Fred Root. The club's past, present and future has been brought together in a new mural. It is welcoming in what it hopes will be a new era for the sport as the club invites more women and people from all backgrounds to play. Kammy Siddique, first XI Captain and vice chair of the club, said: 'At the start of the season we were looking at how we would celebrate our 140 years as a club. It just felt it was fitting to honour our past, our heritage, and we're on a bit of a crest of a wave in terms of our future stuff. Describing the process of gathering 140 years worth of information, he said: 'A lot of time on the internet, time spent with some of the past players and patrons from previous years. The big thing was not to lose the history and for a club that's got some older members and volunteers not to lose that. We're a community club and that includes many families and people from different backgrounds. 'Aside from cricket we do a food parcels project, we do disabilities sports, we've got womens sessions - there's loads of stuff going on that's away from just the typical men in whites playing on a Saturday. "What I've seen in my personal journey here and being a youth worker, it's a great vehicle for young people to learn discipline, learn about teams and family life, working together." Looking at the future, Kammy said: 'It's somewhere for everyone." The mural was made possible through funding from The Leap.

His country was at war for its independence when he was just a child. Years later, Teletovic, who went undrafted, shared his story about the journey before the NBA. "You don't know the situation at that time. You don't even have shoes. The basketball court is like 300 meters from my house. And all my friends and me are playing and then you hear the sirens like the grenades start falling down and just run to your house and hide. If I have to die, I die. For basketball, I will do anything," he recalled.
