PM Anwar calls for expedited Warisan KL project
He said although the project focuses on revitalising Kuala Lumpur and promoting modern nation-building, it must not sideline the people, heritage and cultural values.
'We want this programme expedited because we aim to position Malaysia within a modern and technologically advanced framework, but one that remains deeply rooted in our heritage, culture and values- bringing comfort and benefits to the wider public.
'This heritage effort must ensure public comfort, green spaces, safety, scenic open fields, and access for walking and cycling. This is our vision of a modern, new city - not for any particular class, but to serve the needs of all,' he said at the launch held at Menara 1, Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL), today.
Also present were Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Federal Territories) Datuk Seri Dr Zaliha Mustafa, Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar and Kuala Lumpur Mayor Datuk Seri Dr Maimunah Mohd Sharif.
The Prime Minister said development should not be focused solely on attracting tourists and the elite, while the needs of the majority are overlooked.
He said there is no issue with promoting seven-star hotels or grand restaurants, it is equally important not to marginalise the 80 per cent of Malaysians who rely on street stalls, warung food, and small eateries.
'We are not against efforts to attract tourists and the upper class, but development must not revolve around that alone.That is why I have emphasised to DBKL that small establishments, including stalls and warungs that are clean and comply with strict regulations, must be upgraded and dignified, as 75 to 80 per cent of the people rely on them,' he said.
Warisan KL is a strategic initiative aimed at transforming Kuala Lumpur's historic core into a vibrant cultural and creative zone, guided by the Kuala Lumpur Local Plan 2040 and built on a culture-based approach to urban development.
Through 10 flagship pilot projects, Warisan KL aspires to position Kuala Lumpur as a globally recognised creative city that is inclusive, connected and reflective of Malaysia's identity.
The project spans five main core zones, each with distinct features and functions, supported by surrounding buffer zones encompassing iconic landmarks and urban spaces that strengthen the identity of the city's historic centre.
It adopts a culture-led urban regeneration model to recreate the city as a dynamic creative and cultural destination aligned with the inclusive, progressive, and sustainable vision of Malaysia MADANI.
The project also brings together key strategic partners, including DBKL, Think City, Khazanah, government-linked companies, investment arms, and players in the arts and culture scene - united in their commitment to shaping Kuala Lumpur as a city for all and a true reflection of the nation's identity.
Among the key projects are the Dataran Merdeka Heritage Area, Carcosa Seri Negara, Merdeka 118, the Masjid Jamek Enclave, the Tun Abdul Razak Memorial and the Kuala Lumpur Railway Station.

Anwar launches Malaysia's first multimodal AI model

(Bernama pic) KUALA LUMPUR : Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim says Malaysia's digital transformation has taken a major leap today with the launch of Ilmu 1.0, the country's first multimodal AI model. Ilmu – short for Intelek Luhur Malaysia Untukmu – can process and generate text, voice and images, and is tailored to Malay, English and local dialects. Anwar said Ilmu 1.0, which was developed by YTL AI Labs in partnership with Universiti Malaya, aligned with Putrajaya's ambition to become an AI-driven economy. 'Our vision is not just to harness AI to catch up with the rest of the world, but to lead in some areas, protect our values, and give meaning to the principles of equity and justice,' said Anwar at the Asean AI Summit here. He also stressed the need to bridge the digital divide, especially among rural and marginalised communities. A multimodal AI model is an artificial intelligence system designed to understand and process information from multiple types of data – such as text, images, audio, and video – simultaneously. This approach allows multimodal AI models to perform complex tasks more effectively, such as generating image captions, answering questions about a video, or engaging in more natural human-computer interactions. YTL said Ilmu 1.0 performs on par with top global models like GPT-4o and Llama 3.1, and leads in Malay language understanding and real-world task solving. It is hosted on YTL's local AI cloud, ensuring data residency and enterprise-grade security. YTL Power managing director Yeoh Seok Hong said the model reflected Malaysia's cultural and intellectual heritage, calling it a 'national capability' for inclusive innovation. Digital minister Gobind Singh Deo described Ilmu as a 'groundbreaking' initiative that supports Malaysia's push for ethical, locally relevant AI development. YTL AI Labs also launched the Ilmu AI Accelerator Programme with the Malaysian Digital Economy Corporation, offering RM5 million for startups and developers to build AI tools using Ilmu. Ilmu 1.0 is now available via YTL's cloud platform, with consumer access through ILMUchat rolling out on Malaysia Day on Sept 16. YTL has committed over RM20 billion to build the national AI ecosystem, including green data centres and sovereign models. Early partners include Astro, Media Prima, Ryt Bank, Carsome and Swipey. Inquest into Zara Qairina's death must be expedited as questions mount, says MP
KUALA LUMPUR: The government has been urged to hold an inquest into the death of Zara Qairina Mahathir, an opposition MP told the Dewan Rakyat. Afnan Hamimi Taib Azamudden (PN-Alor Star) said the inquest was necessary to identify those responsible, as the cause of her death and the identity of the perpetrators remained unanswered nearly a month after the incident. "Zara is not only the child of her parents, but the child of all Malaysians who want justice for her still unanswered death," he said during his debate on the 13th Malaysia Plan in the Dewan Rakyat. Afnan also proposed the appointment of full-time hostel wardens who are not schoolteachers, safety audits at schools with a high incidence of bullying, installation of CCTV cameras, the drafting of anti-bullying legislation, and the immediate formation of a special cabinet committee on bullying. The fifth measure, he said, was to create an online complaint platform that could be accessed by schools, police, and other relevant agencies. "What exactly happened? "Who are the perpetrators being protected?" he asked, adding that the issue had undermined public trust in schools, which should instead inspire confidence. He said that national development and economic progress would be meaningless if moral values among those responsible for carrying out such plans continued to deteriorate. Yesterday, the Inspector-General of Police Secretariat's Corporate Communications Unit confirmed that a task force comprising federal police CID personnel has taken over the investigation into Zara's death. Zara, a Form One student of a secondary school in Papar, Sabah, was reported to have fallen from the third floor of a dormitory. She was found unconscious in a drain on July 16 and later died while receiving treatment at Queen Elizabeth I Hospital (HQE) in Kota Kinabalu. On July 31, Sabah police chief Datuk Jauteh Dikun said that the possibility of bullying as a factor had not been ruled out. On Saturday, Zara's grave was exhumed in preparation for a post-mortem. On Sunday, the post-mortem was conducted at HQE, lasting about eight hours from 11am to 7.30pm.
