Scientists decode DNA of man who lived around 5,000 years ago; mixed ancestry reveals early Africa-Asia link

For the first time, scientists have fully decoded the DNA of an ancient Egyptian man who lived around 4,500 to 4,800 years ago. The man was present during the time of the first pyramids.
The man's remains were found in a clay pot in a village south of Cairo. DNA tests showed that 80% of his ancestry was North African while 20% came from West Asia and Mesopotamia, CNN reported.
This proves there were cultural links between ancient Egypt and the Fertile Crescent region (which includes modern Iraq, Iran and Jordan). Until now, such connections were only guessed through archaeological finds.
The ancient man was about 5 feet tall and aged between 44 and 64, very old for that time. DNA showed he had dark skin, brown eyes and brown hair.
His bones revealed a life of hard work, with signs of arthritis, osteoporosis and long hours spent leaning forward. He used to carry heavy things. His pelvic bones showed damage from sitting on hard surfaces for years.
Experts believe he may have been a potter, using one of Egypt's earliest pottery wheels. However, his rich-style burial was surprising as potters were usually not buried with such honour.
The man's body was not mummified as it wasn't common practice then. This helped preserve his DNA, which was taken from one of his teeth.
The man was buried in a clay pot inside a rock tomb. Researchers say Egypt's stable climate also helped keep the DNA safe for thousands of years.
'His higher-class burial is not expected for a potter, who would not normally receive such treatment. Perhaps he was exceptionally skilled or successful to advance his social status,' CNN quoted study coauthor Joel Irish as saying.
Long before the invention of pottery or writing, farming and domesticated animals spread through the Fertile Crescent and Egypt around 6000 BC. This shift marked the move from hunting and gathering to settled life.
Now, scientists are asking if human migration also played a role. Studying ancient DNA from Egypt, Africa and the Fertile Crescent may help answer where people lived and when.
According to researcher Dr. Linus Girdland-Flink, each person's DNA is a unique part of human history.
'While we will never be able to sequence everyone's genome, my hope is that we can gather enough diverse samples from around the world to accurately reconstruct the key events in human history that have shaped who we are today,' CNN quoted Girdland-Flink as saying.

With a reddish-brown Martian feel, the 24.67 kg meteorite is expected to attract intense bidding in New York. Measuring 15 inches wide, the meteorite dwarfs the previous largest Martian specimen by 70 percent. The NWA 16788 was discovered in Niger and is assumed to have travelled 140 million miles to reach Earth. As opposed to meteorites that erode over centuries, it has minimal weathering, a point highlighted by meteoriticists. Bengaluru: The largest piece of Mars on Earth is going up for auction Wednesday in New York. The bid amount for this meteorite collision remnant is set to open at USD 1.6 million, according to Sotheby's auction house. It was in the 1980s that the scientists first started to confirm meteorites from Mars with the help of isotopic analysis—a technique used to understand the age, origin, and chemical composition of a sample. Since then, the demand for authentic pieces has grown. The global craze for astronomical artefacts reportedly surged in the 2010s, with meteorite prices climbing to record figures. In 2013, Chelyabinsk meteorite fragments were sold, with one small piece reaching a price of around $7,000 back then. In 2022, a Costa Rican meteorite was sold for $35,000. In the UK in 2021, 15 gm of Winchcombe meteorite fetched $3,500. In this case, the meteorite is expected to fetch $4 million. The Martian rock is part of Sotheby's Geek Week 2025, featuring more than a hundred lots, including fossils and gem minerals. A juvenile dinosaur skeleton is also set for the bid. The Ceratosaurus was discovered in 1996 at Wyoming's Bone Cabin Quarry, a dinosaur fossil site. The event opens a market for rare scientific and natural history artifacts. CNN reported that some palaeontologists are not happy with the auction. The rock should not be hoarded by a private collector, but it deserves a museum for science and the public, according to Steve Brusatte, a palaeontologist at the University of Edinburgh. Beyond the scientific value, NWA 16788 represents a tangible piece of another planet. In the case of institutions, it's an opportunity to understand the clues about geology. The Martian meteorite is a rare specimen, as only 400 out of 77,000 documented meteorites on Earth originate from Mars, according to Sotheby's auction house. A fragment of this meteorite was analysed in a specialised laboratory, confirming its Martian origin by matching its chemical composition to samples collected during the 1976 Viking space probe mission. The meteorite is assumed to have formed from slowly cooled Martian magma and contains minerals like pyroxene and olivine, giving it a unique texture. The glassy surface as seen is probably due to the intense heat during atmospheric entry. The rock was previously displayed at the Italian Space Agency, Rome, but the meteorite owner remains confidential as the auction house did not reveal the name. The exact arrival date on Earth is still unknown. That said, tests suggest it landed in recent years, according to the New York auction house. Scientists believe two meteorites found in the Sahara Desert in 2023 may have come from Mercury, the closest planet to the Sun. If confirmed, these would be the first meteorites ever found from Mercury. Mercury is hard to study because it is very close to the Sun. Only two spacecraft, Mariner 10 and MESSENGER, have visited it so far. A third, BepiColombo, will reach there in 2026. From Mars and the Moon, over 1,100 meteorites have reached Earth. However, Mercury has never been confirmed as a source. Researchers now think Mercury, despite its size, might be able to send rock fragments into Space during asteroid impacts. Planets like Venus, although closer to Earth, may not be able to do the same due to their strong gravity and thick atmosphere. If proven true, these new meteorites could help scientists better understand Mercury's surface. 'Based on the amount of lunar and Martian meteorites, we should have around 10 Mercury meteorites, according to dynamical modelling,' CNN quoted researcher Ben Rider-Stokes. 'However, Mercury is a lot closer to the sun, so anything that's ejected off Mercury also has to escape the sun's gravity to get to us. It is dynamically possible, just a lot harder. No one has confidently identified a meteorite from Mercury as of yet,' he added. If confirmed to be from Mercury, meteorites NWA 15915 and KG 022 could help scientists learn more about the planet. However, there are doubts as the rocks seem 500 million years older than Mercury's surface. Rider-Stokes, anyway, believes this mismatch may be due to wrong estimates. Until samples are brought from Mercury or a visit to the planet, proving their origin remains very difficult. In 2012, a meteorite named NWA 7325, found in Morocco, was thought to be from Mercury. It excited scientists. Nevertheless, later tests showed it had too much chrome, which didn't match Mercury's known surface. Another group of meteorites, called aubrites, found earlier in France, were also believed to be from Mercury's inner layer. However, their chemical makeup didn't match Mercury's surface. These new meteorites found in the Sahara may, however, truly be from Mercury. These rocks have minerals like olivine and pyroxene, which match findings from NASA's MESSENGER spacecraft. The samples also showed no iron, which fits scientists' understanding of Mercury's surface.
