CINCINNATI (AP) — Max Fried became this season's first 10-game winner, Jasson Dominguez and Trent Grisham had four hits apiece and the New York Yankees defeated the Cincinnati Reds 7-1 on Wednesday night to avoid being swept in the three-game interleague series.
Jazz Chisholm Jr. homered for the Yankees (46-34), who remained one game in front of Tampa Bay in the AL East.
Elly De La Cruz had two hits for the Reds.
Fried (10-2) went seven innings and allowed an unearned run, four hits and seven strikeouts. The left-hander is the third Yankees pitcher since 1962 to be the first in the majors to reach double-digit victories, joining CC Sabathia in 2011 and Tommy John in 1979.
Domínguez and Grisham each had two doubles. The four hits were a career high for Domínguez while it was the third time Grisham has had at least four hits in his seven-year career.
Chisholm, ejected in the ninth inning of Tuesday night's 5-4 loss in 11 innings after arguing a strike call, bounced back with a two-run, third-inning drive off Brady Singer (7-6).
Giancarlo Stanton led off the inning with a single and Chisholm sent Singer's slider 433 feet into the stands in right-center to make it 3-0. Four of Chisholm's 17 homers have come since he returned to the lineup on June 3 after missing 28 games due to a right oblique strain. Key moment
The Yankees struggled with runners in scoring position throughout the series, but broke through in the second when Grisham lined an RBI single to right with the bases loaded. They were 4 for 22 on Wednesday and 5 for 43 for the series. Key stat
Fried is 8-1 with a 0.93 ERA in 10 starts after a Yankees' loss. He has gone at least six innings in all those starts and didn't allow an earned run for the sixth time. Up next
Yankees: Return home to host Oakland in a weekend series. RHP Will Warren (4-4, 4.66 ERA) gets the call on Friday.
Reds: RHP Nick Martinez (4-8, 4.45 ERA) goes on Friday when San Diego comes in for three games. RHP Dylan Cease (3-6, 4.43) starts for the Padres.

MLB Fans Excited After Shane McClanahan's Post on Wednesday

MLB Fans Excited After Shane McClanahan's Post on Wednesday originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Tampa Bay Rays starting pitcher Shane McClanahan is looking to make his 2025 season debut for the club as they battle for first place in the AL East, trailing the New York Yankees by one game. Advertisement McClanahan has spent the first few months of this season on the injured list with an inflamed nerve in his left triceps, an issue that flared up during a spring-training outing against the Boston Red Sox and bumped him from his projected role as Tampa Bay's Opening Day starter. The setback came on the heels of his August 2023 Tommy John surgery — a procedure that sidelined him for all of 2024. Despite that setback, McClanahan has now resumed mound work, posting an Instagram story of himself pitching earlier today hinting at a step forward in his rehab process. MLB fans were excited to see the former Tampa Bay ace back on the bump. Advertisement One fan replied, "Great to see." "Just need this king ready for October," added another. "How long until he's back in the big leagues?" asked a fan. "August 1?" said another hinting at a possible return date. A fan added, "I wanted to hear how hard he was throwing." When healthy, McClanahan has terrorized big-league lineups. He earned All-Star nods in both 2022 and 2023, and before his elbow injury last summer he logged 21 starts, compiling an 11–2 record with a 3.29 ERA and 121 strikeouts over 115 innings. With the Rays clinging to a one-game deficit in the AL East, McClanahan's impending return can't come soon enough. Reds' Terry Francona Sends 3-Word Elly De La Cruz Message After Yankees Game

Reds' Terry Francona Sends 3-Word Elly De La Cruz Message After Yankees Game originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Cincinnati Reds shortstop Elly De La Cruz is currently playing in his third major league season with the team after he debuted during the 2022 season, and made an impact immediately becoming the first player in MLB history to record 100 stolen bases and 30 home runs in his first two MLB seasons.. Advertisement De La Cruz enjoyed a breakout campaign last year, making his first All-Star team and finishing eighth in NL MVP voting on the strength of his blend of power and speed energizing the team. The Reds as a whole missed the playoffs, finishing 77–85, and new manager Terry Francona—hired in the 2024 offseason—has made one thing clear: winning and a return to October baseball are the organization's top priorities. Cincinnati Reds shortstop Elly De La Cruz (44)© Sam Navarro-Imagn Images On Tuesday against the New York Yankees in the bottom half of the eleventh inning, De La Cruz misread the scoreboard assuming the Reds had already scored the game's winning run and failed to advance to third base on a single to left-center field. Advertisement After the game, Francona told the 23-year-old shortstop he was better than that, and De La Cruz apologized and reassured him the mistake wouldn't happen again. 'I believe him,' Francona said, praising the shortstop's accountability and his willingness to learn. Despite the mistake, De La Cruz has put together another strong season. In 80 games he's hit .274 with an .860 OPS, clubbing 18 home runs, driving in 55 runs and stealing 21 bases. His dynamic performance has him sitting third among NL shortstops in All-Star voting, and Francona is counting on him to remain a key part of Cincinnati's success moving forward. Celtics' Brad Stevens says Jayson Tatum progressing well, but won't return until 'fully ready'

Associated Press When Jayson Tatum ruptured his right Achilles tendon in the Celtics' conference semifinals loss the the New York Knicks, everything about Boston's immediate future changed. But what won't change is the Celtics' front office's prudence in making sure he has the space and time to make a full recovery. Boston president of basketball operations Brad Stevens said the All-Star is progressing well following surgery last month. But asked about whether the team had put a potential timeline on Tatum's return, Stevens was definitive that there would be no rushing the star's rehabilitation. 'We don't and we won't,' Stevens said Wednesday night following the first round of the NBA draft. 'We won't put a projected timeline on him for a long, long time. ... It's baby steps right now. He's actually progressed great, but I don't know what that means in regard to projected timelines. But that will be in consultation with him ... and everybody else to make sure when he hits the court he is fully ready, and fully healthy. And that will be the priority." Tatum is expected to miss most if not all of next season. It has already had implications for next season, with the team opting to trade Kristaps Porzingis and Jrue Holiday — both key contributors from the 2024 title team — in an effort to get the team's salary under the luxury tax second penalty apron. But Stevens said All-Star Jaylen Brown has already been back to the Celtics' training facility since he had minimally invasive surgery to clean up his right knee. Brown is doing some light ball handling and work around the rim, Stevens said. 'We said be ready for training camp and I think he'll probably be going full well ahead of that," Stevens said. While Stevens said league rules wouldn't allow him to address the pending trades of Porzingis or Holiday, he said anything they do this offseason is with an eye toward regaining flexibility after multiple seasons with a high payroll. 'As far as whatever moves that those are a apart of, they're all separate and hard and things that you're going to have to do your best to make sure you put yourself in the right positions,' Stevens said. 'We knew this was coming. This isn't a huge surprise. ... The biggest thing for us is making sure that we balance that, maximizing what we can with regard to what we bring back so we can continue to build and grow.' ___ AP NBA: recommended
