The initiative, aimed at transforming lives through education, was overseen by ZP CEO KR Nandini.
The participating inmates — 37 men and 3 women — were receiving basic literacy training for the past year.
These prisoners, once illiterate, are now learning to read and write through regular classes conducted within the jail.
Nandini stressed the need to build awareness among inmates about the power of education. She also emphasised the importance of providing skill development training, enabling prisoners to return to society with dignity and employable skills after their release.
During her visit, she inspected facilities provided for women inmates, including barracks, workshops, library, drinking water, sanitation, and other essential amenities.
One elderly inmate shared his journey with the CEO, saying, "At first, I wondered why I should hold a pen at my age, which should have been for my children or grandchildren, but teacher Shivalingaiah explained why learning is important. Now I can recognise letters and read a little."
Many inmates expressed their gratitude and said they plan to request the education department to honour their teacher, Shivalingaiah, on Teacher's Day (September 5) for his dedicated work.
Shivalingaiah, who leads the programme, has so far helped 126 inmates gain basic literacy. Despite facing initial scepticism from colleagues for teaching prisoners, he persisted, driven by the belief that everyone deserves a second chance.
Jail superintendent TK Lokesh explained that inmates study two hours daily, following the 'Light for Life' curriculum that includes reading, writing, arithmetic, and general knowledge. Study materials are provided to aid their learning. Vocational training is also offered in mushroom farming, cooking, plumbing, and motor repairs, based on the inmates' interests.
"Our library has over 18,000 books and subscribes to 13 daily newspapers, five weeklies, and monthly magazines. Facilities like tables, chairs, and fans ensure a comfortable reading environment," Lokesh added.
The answer sheets from Sunday's exam will be evaluated by the block education office (South Zone), Mandya. Inmates who pass will receive 'neo-literate certificates' recognising their achievement.

Pune ZP to train 100 teachers in German and French
PUNE: In what is being billed as a game-changer for rural education, the Pune Zilla Parishad (ZP) has partnered with Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) to train teachers from ZP schools across Pune district in German and French so that they can then equip students with basic knowledge of these foreign languages. The move comes in response to increasing competition from private schools, even in remote areas of the district. (Photo by Pratham Gokhale/Hindustan Times) (Pratham Gokhale/HT Photo) In the first phase of the programme, 100 teachers from 100 ZP schools across the district will be trained in German and French, with the training conducted by the university's department of foreign languages through a blend of online and offline sessions. The programme is open to all interested ZP school teachers, with priority given to those from model schools and institutions with more than 20 students in classes 6 and 7. Out of 100 teachers selected, 80 will be trained in German and 20 in French. To make the learning process easier, the teachers will be given pen drives with video content that includes Marathi-to-German and Marathi-to-French translations. These videos will also carry the required syllabus for instructing students. The course will cover foundational topics such as vocabulary, pronunciation, tense and other basic grammar concepts. The 180-hour course is expected to start on Independence Day on August 15. Sanjay Naikade, education officer (primary), ZP, said, 'Initially, one teacher from each selected school will undergo training. The idea is to eventually enable these teachers to introduce foreign languages to their students in a simplified and effective manner.' The programme is being offered in collaboration with the university, and teachers will receive formal certification from the university upon completion of the course. The total course fee is ₹10,000, 75% of which will be covered by the ZP making it greatly accessible for rural teachers. The remaining 25% will be paid by the participating teachers. The ZP has already allocated ₹7.5 lakh from its budget to support the programme. A teacher from Velhe taluka - one of the remotest areas of Pune district - Pallavi Shirodkar, told Hindustan Times, 'Till now, many of our rural students did not even know what a foreign language was. Learning German or French can open global doors for them. For us, this is the first step towards enabling our students to even dream about studying abroad. All of us teachers are so happy to get this chance to learn a new language. Across the entire state, the Pune ZP is the only one that has taken this initiative and I am very excited to learn. I am waiting for the day I can speak in French and teach the same to my students. I sincerely thank the Pune ZP for making this possible.' The initiative is not just about language acquisition but also about the teachers planning to celebrate 'French Day' and 'German Day' at their schools, embracing inclusivity and cultural diversity in the process. Meanwhile, the ZP is also considering post-school online sessions for students once the teachers have been trained. Overall, the initiative is being seen as a step towards integrating skill-based learning and providing students with broader career opportunities, including prospects in the global job market.

Public participation key to proper water use: Mandya ZP CEO
Mandya: Water is one of the most essential basic amenities, and public participation is key to ensuring its judicious use, said zilla panchayat CEO KR Nandini. She emphasised the importance of raising awareness at the grassroots level to support the goals of the National Jal Jeevan Mission, which aims to provide a 24x7 drinking water supply to rural areas. She was speaking after inaugurating a district-level one-day workshop. It focused on strengthening the role of gram panchayats in managing sustainable rural drinking water systems, implementing the Karnataka Sustainable Rural Drinking Water Programme, and officially declaring villages with uninterrupted water supply. While underlining the importance of providing essential infrastructure, Nandini said that maintaining these services is equally critical. She urged officials to ensure uninterrupted and sustainable operation of 24x7 water supply systems across villages. Expressing concern over reports of water contamination in some areas, she said untreated or impure water entering the pipeline network poses serious health risks. She directed officials to conduct a thorough inspection of water supply pipelines, submit a detailed report within a month, and recommend preventive measures to avoid further contamination. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Libas Purple Days Sale Libas Undo "Contaminated drinking water can become a serious threat to public health. Water quality checks must be conducted daily without fail. Any negligence in this regard will result in strict disciplinary action," she warned. Nandini also highlighted that five villages in the district are already receiving 24-hour uninterrupted water supply on a pilot basis, with no reported issues so far. To address household-level technical issues, she proposed a skill-based employment initiative: identifying unemployed women with ITI or engineering backgrounds in each taluk, training them to handle minor plumbing or pipeline repairs, and thereby empowering them with job opportunities.
