Southern Palladium's new staged development path for Bengwenyama Project

Southern Palladium has released an Optimised Prefeasibility Study (OPFS) for its 70%-owned Bengwenyama Project that outlines a staged development approach that should reduce capital costs by $173 million (R3.1 billion) to $279m (R4.9bn) compared to the first study, presenting a 'highly attractive option' for shareholders.
The board of the Australia and JSE-listed company said Thursday that the staged production option provides the best balance between unlocking project value and allows the company to fund project development with minimal future dilution for shareholders.
"We are pleased to announce the results of the OPFS for the Tier 1 Bengwenyama Project where our primary aim has been to reduce the initial capital requirement," said MD Johan Odendaal.
"The board and its consultants have evaluated a number of options and believe that a staged development provides a pragmatic and value-driven path forward."
Project level NPV (net present value) (after tax, 100% basis) for the OPFS was estimated at $857m (A$1.3bn), and an internal rate of return was at 26.4%. A staged production proposal assumed an initial Stage 1 production rate of 100ktpa expanding after 4 years to 200ktpa.
The peak funding requirement of $279m would represent a 38% reduction ($173m) to the peak funding total set out in the first feasibility study, while the proposed Stage 2 expansion capital would be funded through cash flow.
'Importantly, Stage 1 is expected to be a strongly cash-generative project in its own right, meaning it should be able to attract traditional market-related debt project financing. Cash costs for both Stage 1 and Stage 2 remain attractive and lie within the lowest quartile for PGM projects globally,' Odendaal said.
The valuations were done on the prefeasibility study basket price of $1 557/6Eoz, which is 6% below the basket price on July 7, 2025, of $1 662/6Eoz.
The option to utilise existing mineral processing infrastructure in the area could also result in further 'significant' reductions to peak funding. The issue of the Mining Right was anticipated in the near term.
The OPFS was done because while the full-scale design outlined in the original pre-feasibility study was technically and economically compelling, the substantial upfront capital required could have posed a funding challenge, the board said.
'Importantly, the staged approach also improves our ability to further de-risk key geological, technical, and operational assumptions. Stage 1, designed to deliver over 200koz per year of PGMs in concentrate, will provide valuable insights into ground conditions and metallurgical performance, supporting more informed mine planning and optimised design for subsequent stages.'
It would also allow the project development with infrastructure roll-out and community readiness, ensuring a more sustainable and inclusive growth trajectory, the board said.
Stage 2 of the project was designed to deliver PGM production at levels forecast in the earlier study, averaging over 400koz per year for an aggregate mine life of over 20 years from year 4 or possibly sooner.

Image: Supplied Sibanye Stillwater's share price gave up some of its sharp 12-month gains and fell 3.5% on Friday after it reported impairments for its US platinum operations and on its Keliber lithium project, and despite forecasting a 19-times increase in headline earnings per share (HEPS). The multinational mining and metals processing group headquartered in South Africa with gold and platinum and other operations on five continents said HEPS for the six months to June 30 was expected to be between 180 cents and 200 cents, representing an increase of more than 100% compared with the 10 cents reported last year. The basic earnings per share loss was expected to be between 120 cents and 133 cents, a 55% to 60% improvement compared to an EPS loss of 259 cents in the first half of 2024. Friday's closing share price of R36.32 was up 90% from R19.11 a year before. The difference between positive HEPS and the basic loss per share was mainly due to the impairment losses on the US PGM operations and the Keliber project. The impairment of non-financial assets at the US PGM operations was a consequence of the One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBBA) signed into US law on July 4, 2025. The OBBBA amended the treatment of credits for critical minerals, which was previously assumed to be evergreen. The substantial increase in HEPS was due to improved profitability from the SA gold operations, after a 36% increase in the average rand gold price year-on-year, improved operational profitability of the South Africa PGM and gold operations, and reduced losses at the US PGM operations following restructuring in the first half. These were also offset by estimated fair value losses on gold hedge contracts for the second half, and operational constraints at the SA PGM and SA gold operations during the first half, which increased inventory and ore-stockpiles, and lower than produced metal sales. At the US PGM operations, the start-up and commissioning of Electric Furnace 2 after a rebuild and the decommissioning of Electric Furnace 1 resulted in a buildup of inventory and lower metal sales during the second quarter. Inventories were expected to normalise in the second half. Production from all group operations other than the SA gold operations was consistent year-on-year and within annual guidance ranges for 2025. The SA PGM operations delivered steady operating results, with production consistent with last year and costs well managed. PGM prices had rallied sharply since May 2025, with the average basket price 19% higher than for the first half of 2025. Should these higher prices continue in the second half, 'the SA PGM operations are likely to experience significantly higher earnings,' the group said. The operational challenges that impacted production from the South Africa gold operations resulted in production declining 13% year-on-year to 300,191 ounces, below planned levels. Challenges at the Kloof operation were receiving management focus, while operational issues at Driefontein and Beatrix operations were largely resolved with production recovering towards the end of the first half. Production from the South Africa gold operations was expected to increase in the second half, boosting revenue and earnings, should the gold price remain at current levels. Production from the US PGM recycling operations remained consistent. The Reldan recycling operations sold 63,992 ounces of gold, 932,712 ounces of silver, 8,020 ounces of platinum, 11,557 ounces of palladium, and 1.53 million pounds of copper. South Africa braces for job losses as US imposes steep US tariffs on exports

Image: Denzil Maregele/Independent Newspapers Professional services firm, EY, has reiterated the warning that the newly imposed 30% levy on South African exports to the United States could cause around 100 000 domestic job losses. South Africa faces a 30% rate, alongside peers like India (25%), Brazil (50%), Taiwan (20%), Switzerland (39%), Canada (35%), Mexico (18%), and Vietnam (22%). The tariffs, ranging from 10% to 41% on imports from 69 countries and effective from early August, will add to existing duties under Section 232 and the Inflation Reduction Act, overriding prior exemptions. According to the US Trade Representative, these measures signal a long-term pivot toward supply chain realignment and domestic reindustrialisation, unlikely to reverse soon. In its South African Macroeconomic Outlook for August released on Wednesday, EY said the agriculture and automotive sectors were expected to be hit the hardest, with key exports like citrus, wine, soybeans, sugar cane, and beef being especially vulnerable. However, some relief comes from exemptions granted for select products, including critical minerals like platinum group metals (PGM). EY's chief Africa economist, Angelika Goliger, underscored the forward path amid these challenges. "While the tariffs could strain key exports like citrus, wine, soybeans, sugar cane, and beef, exemptions for PGM will provide a buffer, enabling South Africa to pivot toward high-value mineral trade and emerging markets," Goliger said. EY's warning echoes that of the South African Reserve Bank (Sarb) as Governor Lesetja Kganyago in July said the US tariffs on South African products could cause about 100 000 job losses, with the agriculture and automotive sectors hardest-hit. 'If we do not find alternative measures, the impact on jobs could be around 100 000, so that is what we actually face,' Kganyago said during a radio interview. 'The impact in agriculture could actually be quite devastating because agriculture employs a lot of low-skilled workers, and here the impact is on citrus fruit, table grapes and wines.' These estimates are higher than the recent job losses forecast from the Department of Trade, Industry and Competition (the dtic) as it only foresees at least 30 000 job losses from the projected figures. Last week, the dtic director-general Simphiwe Hamilton said they based this estimate on the ongoing consultations they have with all the sectors of the economy — from automotive, agriculture and all the other sectors that are going to be impacted. 'At this stage we are sitting at approximately 30 000 jobs that could be affected by this, if it were to be mismanaged in any manner,' Hamilton said. South Africa will be submitting a revised offer for a trade deal to Washington in a bid to lower the 30% tariffs while also looking at diversifying into Asian and African markets. The dtic has also established an Export Support Desk, which will serve as a direct point of contact for companies affected by the US tariff hike. EY's analysis projects that while short-term disruptions may weigh on growth, strategic shifts could enhance long-term competitiveness. With PGM exempted, EY said the mining sector stands to benefit from sustained investor interest in critical minerals essential for green technologies. EY said agriculture and automotive firms, however, will need agile adaptations, such as supply chain rerouting and innovation in sustainable practices, to thrive. "Looking ahead, the government's proactive Export Support Desk will be crucial in guiding businesses toward diversification, potentially unlocking new opportunities in Asia and the EU to offset US market losses," Goliger said. "These measures will not only cushion immediate impacts but position South Africa for stronger, more resilient trade networks in a post-tariff world. By accelerating diversification, we could see a rebound in export volumes within 12-18 months, particularly if global commodity demand stabilizes amid US-China tensions." BUSINESS REPORT

Valterra's maiden post-Anglo results underwhelm, but rising PGM prices bode well
The Valterra demerger from Anglo was a fairly straightforward process and the company looks ready to carve out its own destiny. The De Beers disposal will be much more challenging. Valterra Platinum's maiden interim results hardly shot the lights out, but rising platinum group metals prices (PGM) bode well for it as a standalone business outside the Anglo American stable. Indeed, with PGM prices once again on the boil, Anglo may yet rue its decision to demerge its platinum arm as it pivots to a sharper focus on copper, iron ore and fertiliser minerals. Valterra completed its demerger from Anglo in late May as the PGM market was showing the signs of an upturn. But the rally was not completely reflected in its results, which were hampered by an extreme flooding event at its Amandelbult operation – the weather is having a material impact on many a mining company these days. The company took a R4.6-billion hit from that deluge, but expects to get most of the money back from insurance. It also had a hit of R1.4-billion in one-off demerger-related costs – lawyers and bankers don't come cheap. Headline earnings per share tanked 81% to R4.73 per share. But the future, while perhaps not bright enough to don shades at this point, looks promising as the sun once again rises on the PGM industry. Perky prices Prices in the year to date have been perky. Platinum is up over 50% to more than 10-year highs, palladium is 35% higher, and rhodium is fetching 42% more. 'We have guided for a 15% increase in production in the second half, and we will be delivering that into buoyant prices,' CEO Craig Miller told Daily Maverick. 'We have been saying for quite some time that the market is in a deficit, that supply is relatively tight and that demand is robust. And that really played out in June and now July. The basket price in July is 20% higher than where it was in the second quarter.' Several factors explain this rebound from depressed prices that in recent years slashed the profits of PGM producers. These include the supply constraints that Miller mentioned, spurred in part by a collapse of the PGM recycling industry, which has also been battered by low prices. There have also been shifting demand patterns. Record gold prices have seen the jewellery industry switch to lower-priced platinum, while sales of hybrid vehicles – which actually require more PGMs than internal combustion engine vehicles – are gaining traction. For the second half of the year, Valterra will be able to bank on the recovery at Amandebult and higher grades from its cash-spinning Mogalakwena operation. The Valterra demerger from Anglo was also a fairly straightforward process, and the company looks ready to carve out its own destiny. Anglo will be releasing its interim results on Thursday and should provide an update then on its plans to dispose of diamond giant De Beers. The PGM sector has had a rough ride in recent years, but producers of natural diamonds face an existential crisis from the surge in lab-grown gems and changing consumer patterns.
