Kota Kinabalu: N82 Bukit Sari Lawas captured the Head of State Trophy at the 10th FCAS Sabah International Dragon Boat Race held at Likas Bay on Sunday. The Sarawakian outfit, who finished runners-up in the Chief Minister Trophy last year, crossed the finishing line in a record time of three minutes, 39.55 seconds to take home the RM10,000 prize money, ahead of Lautan Biru SLDB Dragon Boat Team Tuaran (03:41:66) and Jetama Entulon Family DBT (03:42:58).
Advertisement Team manager Bahtiar Sajeli was delighted with the victory in their first appearance in the top category. 'We started our preparation and training only right after Hari Raya, and we were confident of winning the title following the good time achieved in the early round,' he said after the prize presentation. Ten other categories were contested and the Sabah Chief Minister Trophy was won by Jetama Entulon Family Senior (03:41:09) followed by Landas Kasihnya Warisan (03:41:66) and Sri Sundar (03:42:11). The other top three winners in each of the categories were RMP Paddlers, DBKL, Sabah River Raptors ITCC (Sabah FCAS Dragon Trophy); KKCCCI, KK Hakka Dragon Boat Team, Malaysia Chinese Muslim Association (Local FCAS Trophy); KKCCCI, Kuching Dragon Boat Club, KK Hakka Dragon Boat Team (FCAS Trophy-Chinese Mix Team); KKCCCI, Kuching Dragon Boat Club, KK Hakka Dragon Boat Team (FCAS Trophy - Men's Team); Sibling Performance team, Lentuong Junior SLDB Team, Jetama Entulon Family Junior (Kinabalu Junior Trophy - local juniors 15-20); PS Dragon Boat Team, Sri Sundar, Dragon Boat Labuk Beluran (Kinabalu Dragon Trophy - Men's Team 200m Open); Dragon Boat Club - CUHK, DBKL, Sabah River Raptors (Kinabalu Mix Trophy - Mix Team Open 200m); KKCCCI, Karapaw, KKCCCI, Kuching Dragon Boat Club (Kinabalu Phoenix Trophy - Women); PNK Master Dragon Boat, DBKL, Lela Cheteria (Kinabalu Master Trophy International & Malaysian Men's Team).
Advertisement The closing ceremony was officiated by Industrial Development and Entrepreneurship Minister Datuk Ginger Phoong Jin Zhe representing the Head of State Tun Musa Aman. Also present were president of Federation of Chinese Association Sabah (FCAS) Tan Sri TC Goh and deputy president cum organising chairlady Datuk Susan Wong Siew Guen. Meanwhile, Goh was happy to see the record turnout in particular with the overseas participants in the three-day event. 'I am very happy that we managed to create history again. We had 75 teams taking part in 11 categories and it was also a new record with 988 athletes. 'The event was able to run smoothly without any incidents despite the weather and we are grateful for the cooperation from all the participants. 'This is an international dragon boat race and this year we managed to attract participants from Singapore, Hong Kong and Brunei. Kota Kinabalu: Team Reborn Sabah emerged champions in the Tug of War invitation tournament held in conjunction with the annual Lun Bawang Cultural event (Irau Aco Lun Bawang) at Stadium Lawas, Sarawak on Monday (June 2). The self-financed team comprising members from several districts in the State managed to overcome numerous obstacles to defeat another Sabah team AF Civil Sabah in the final to take home the RM3,000 winning prize. The team was led by captain Mohd Faisal Norjam from Kota Marudu and the other members were Andy Gerald (Penampang), Mike Andy Philip (Keningau), Jensen Chin Kin Loong (Keningau), Mintog Hery Gagau (Kota Marudu), Adi bin Japar (Kota Belud), Romzi Majual (Kota Marudu), Rerybell Julimin (Kudat), Faristho Saith (Kota Belud) and Mecxon Jabilin (Sepanggar). Sabahan is three times world beater

Kota Kinabalu: It was a hat-trick of wins for Angie Yan Jia Chi as the Sabahan lass successfully defended her U23 World title in the wai kru event at the 2025 World Muaythai Championships held in Antalya, Turkey on Saturday. In the final, she proved her superiority with technical precision as she scored 9.60 points to edge her Filipina opponent Rhichein Yosorez by a margin of 0.1 points to take the title for the third time in a row. Last year, she won her second U23 title at the IFMA Senior World Championship held in Greece preceded by her maiden victory in Bangkok, Thailand a year earlier. She had previously also won two titles at the IFMA World Cup in Turkey and the World Combat Games in Riyadh in 2023. Her mother Sally Kuan, who has always been very supportive in her training, was present to accompany Angie at the championship to see her lifting the crown. She said her daughter's success in winning a gold medal for Malaysia proved the dedication and high spirit of the country's young athletes in the traditional art of Muaythai on the world stage. She also expressed her gratitude to Sabah Muaythai Association president Haji Nazri Abd Razak and the president of the Malaysian Muaythai Association Dato' Shahnaz Azmi for their support and joint efforts to promote the sport in the country. Meanwhile, Nazri congratulated Angie for the success and said her achievement proved that their developing programme is bearing fruit and hoped it will motivate more youth in the state to follow in her footsteps. 'Our programme has reached phase three in five years and with five world titles produced, we are certain many youth in Sabah will like to join us as pelapis (back-up) to follow the success story,' he said. Historic outing for Sabah athletes

Kota Kinabalu: Seven Sabah Masters Athletics Association (Samas) athletes representing the country had a historic outing at the World Masters Games held in Chinese Taipei recently. They returned with a record eight gold, five silver and three bronze medals. Lucy Yong competing in the women's 65 category won three gold medals in the 100m, long jump and triple jump events, while Dr Alison Chew in the women's 40 category delivered two golds in the 100m and 400m hurdles as well as two bronzes in the 200m and 400m. The other gold medallists were Juliana Gumpil (women's 60) in pole vault, Bernice Lau Kam Mun (women's 50) in long jump and Datuk Abdul Mulok (men's 70) in pole vault. Juliana also won three silvers in the 80m hurdles, long jump and triple jump with the other silvers came from Shamry Mohd Ali (men's 55) in 100m hurdles and Charlie Lee (men's 65) in high jump, who also delivered one bronze in 100m. Advertisement Team leader Shamry, who is also Samas treasurer, was delighted with the number of medals won by the team. 'This is the most successful outing ever for both Malaysia Masters and Sabah Masters Athletics at a World Masters Games event. 'Our success has been greatly supported by the Ministry of Youth and Sports and Sabah Sports Council. 'Credit also to our Masters athletes for their dedication and commitments to undergo rigorous training under the guidance of equally dedicated coaches and officials,' he said. He also said they were able to send a bigger squad this time due to cheaper airfare to Taipei. 'Another contributing factor to our success in winning so many medals this time is the affordability of travelling to Taipei, which is the closest World Masters Games (WMG) venue to Malaysia.' He hoped with the continued success story of Samas, more in the State will be encouraged to join them for training and competing in the future. 'Masters athletics is about providing competitive opportunities for adults aged 35 and above, allowing them to continue participating in and enjoying the sport well beyond the traditional athletic years —with a strong emphasis on lifelong fitness, health, and camaraderie,' he said.
