Imagine building a skyscraper on sand. That's what India's AI ambitions could look like without rethinking data centres. As generative AI, 5G, and IoT explode, our digital economy's bedrock—data centres—is at a tipping point.Emergence of AI Data Centres in IndiaIndia's data centre market is sprinting at ~25% CAGR, fueled by AI's relentless demand for compute power. But here's the catch: while we generate 20% of global data, we hold just 3% of data centre capacity. The government's push for data localisation under the Digital Personal Data Protection Act (DPDPA) has further accelerated the establishment of local data centres, drawing significant investments from global giants like AWS, Microsoft, and Google, as well as domestic players such as Reliance Jio and Yotta Infrastructure. Recently, during the Union Budget presentation, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman allocated INR 20 billion ($230 million) for the IndiaAI mission, which will be used to build AI and data centre infrastructure, including GPUs, data centres, and connectivity solutions.
AI isn't just code—it's hardware. Next-generation data centres need GPU clusters, liquid cooling, optical fibre cables, connectivity solutions, and renewable energy to handle workloads that are ten times denser than traditional setups. Projects like Yotta NM1 in Navi Mumbai and CtrlS Hyderabad exemplify the shift toward AI-optimised facilities, equipped with GPU clusters, advanced cooling, and renewable energy integration.
The Infrastructure Gap: A Strategic Imperative
Despite this momentum, India's AI data centre infrastructure faces significant challenges:
Real estate and Connectivity challenges
India's major metro markets like Mumbai, Chennai, Bengaluru, and Hyderabad dominate data centre capacity but face high land costs and limited availability of suitable sites. While metros benefit from robust fibre networks, many regions beyond metropolitan areas still suffer from limited fibre availability and high latency, impeding AI workloads that require ultra-low latency and high bandwidth.
Network Latency and Location Strategy
AI applications require ultra-low latency to function effectively, which means data centres must be located close to end users in major metropolitan areas. However, high population density and limited land availability complicate site selection. Addressing network latency requires not only proximity but also optimised connectivity infrastructure, including carrier-neutral facilities and high-speed interconnections within and between data centres.
Infrastructure Modernisation and AI-Readiness
Many existing data centres in APAC were designed before the AI era and are not equipped to handle the unique demands of AI workloads. This creates a gap that new developments and upgrades must fill by incorporating AI-ready features such as higher floor loading capacity, advanced cooling systems, and enhanced network capabilities.
Made in India solutions - India's data centre revolution demands locally engineered solutions to overcome unique challenges like connectivity gaps in tier 2 and 3 cities, unreliable power infrastructure, complex land acquisition hurdles, and the need for energy-efficient architectures tailored to extreme climatic conditions. This requires data centre solutions like driving demand for home-grown solutions that cater to hyper-scalable fibre backhaul, edge computing integration, etc.
Charting the path forward
The fundamental changes AI is bringing to data centres are truly remarkable. India's vision to become a global AI powerhouse hinges on bridging the digital infrastructure gap, requiring advanced connectivity solutions to build this infrastructure.
As AI continues to take centre stage, data centres built on agile and future-proof optical fibre foundations will evolve to provide immense compute power. This transformation will enable them to meet the industry's demands, including:

Google's Gemini app is reportedly getting a new capability that will let users upload videos in the chat and get an analysis done on them. So far, users have been able to upload pictures and documents for the artificial intelligence chatbot to analyse or scan. However, soon they will also be able to upload videos in the prompt. According to a report by 9To5Google, Gemini will analyse the video and let users ask questions about it. 9To5Google tested the feature by sharing a video and asking the AI bot to describe the video, which it did pretty accurately. It is to be noted that Gemini video upload feature has not yet been rolled out widely. The availability of the feature varies depending on accounts/devices that 9To5Google checked. However, this feature will reportedly be made available to both free and paid users across Android (Google app 16.23 beta) and iOS, as well as 2.5 Flash and 2.5 Pro. The feature is not live on the web interface yet. Video in Gemini: How to use Open the plus (+) menu to upload a file. Select Gallery or Files from the options. If video upload is available for your account, you'll be able to select video files. If not, video files will appear grayed out and cannot be uploaded. In other related news, Google officially rolled out its Gemini 2.5 series of AI models on Tuesday, making them widely accessible. As part of the launch, users can now interact with the stable releases of both Gemini 2.5 Pro and Gemini 2.5 Flash. The tech giant has also extended access to the Pro model for users on the free tier of the Gemini platform. In Hyderabad, Google sets up its first safety engineering centre in Asia-Pacific region
Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy Wednesday inaugurated global tech giant Google's first Safety Engineering Centre in the country in Hyderabad. It is also the first dedicated Google Safety Engineering Centre (GSEC) in the Asia-Pacific region and joins a select group of such facilities worldwide, the others being in Dublin, Munich, and Malaga. The high-tech cybersecurity hub, which is part of Google's largest campus outside the United States, will focus on artificial intelligence (AI)-driven research, advanced online safety tools, skill development, and is expected to create thousands of jobs. Speaking at the event, Reddy said the world has changed since Google was launched. 'Today, our lives are totally digital. Today, we are worried about privacy, safety and security. Our economy, our government and our lives are digital. If digital is safe, we will grow. I am proud Google will use the cybersecurity hub to develop advanced security and safety solutions,' the chief minister added. Confidently declaring that Telangana would be the most investment-friendly state for organisations worldwide, Reddy said, 'The first link you will find in your search is Hyderabad,' he added. IT Minister D Sridhar Babu, meanwhile, highlighted Telangana's role as a 'torchbearer for other states in 'Ethical Innovation',' asserting that it has become a 'magnet for global capital' and will stand as a 'model of inclusive digital governance.' He elaborated on Hyderabad's growing prominence, stating, 'Hyderabad is not just a city, it is the future.' He shared statistics, revealing that IT/IT-Enabled Services (ITES) exports from Hyderabad in 2024-25 were valued at Rs 2.68 lakh crore, creating 40,000 new IT jobs. He also noted that 7 out of the top 10 global tech giants operate in Hyderabad. Minister Babu expressed strong belief that the Google Safety Engineering Centre will elevate Hyderabad's IT sector to even greater heights and enhance the Hyderabad brand on the global stage. Google India's vice-president and country manager Preeti Lobana said the tech giant's work in India revolved around a clear set of goals. 'Firstly, helping businesses thrive and grow. Secondly, empowering India's AI transformation. Thirdly, reimagining our core products so that these are more helpful and people can achieve more and lastly, ensuring digital safety,' she said. Further, adding that trust is the bedrock of digital aspirations, she said that 'for the internet to truly serve as a force for good and for India and Indians to help realise the potential, safety and security cannot be an afterthought.' Arijit Sarkar, V-P, Google's global ads business, said the company was not just opening a new centre but a profound statement of its commitment to India's digital safety and the vital role it plays in global online presence. Adding why Google wanted to set up a GSEC in Hyderabad, he said, 'India's digital journey continues to be nothing short of remarkable, connecting millions of people, unlocking unprecedented connections, commerce and growth. As the nation continues to have its rapid digital ascent, it is essential that we create a safe, secure and trustworthy online set up.'

LAHDC delegation called on Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman in Ladakh
Leh (Ladakh) [India] June 18 (ANI): A delegation led by Yangchan Dolma, Councillor of Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC) Leh, recently called on Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman in Leh on Wednesday. In a post on X, Nirmala Sitharaman's Office stated that, 'Delegation led by Smt Yangchan Dolma, Councillor - Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC) Leh, calls on Smt Nirmala Sitharaman.' During her visit, Sitharaman visited the project site for the National Large Solar Telescope (NLST) near Pangong Lake in Merak. The NLST is a proposed ground-based 2-m class optical and near-infrared (IR) observational facility. Furthermore, Sitharaman laid a wreath in tribute and paid respects to the martyrs at the Rezang La War Memorial at Chushul, in Ladakh. The War Memorial was constructed in 1963 in the Chushul plains, at an altitude of over 15,000 feet. Earlier, on Monday, Sitharaman visited Rongdo Valley in Ladakh and interacted with members of the local tribal community members. In a post on X, Nirmala Sitharaman's office said, 'Nirmala Sitharaman visits Rongdo Valley in Ladakh and interacts with members of the local nomadic tribal community. During the visit, Nirmala Sitharaman handed over a cheque of Rs 50 lakh for the construction of tents for the tribe, under the CSR initiative of the @TheOfficialSBI Foundation.' Earlier on June 15, Union Minister for Finance and Corporate Affairs, Nirmala Sitharaman, virtually inaugurated several development projects on Sunday in Leh, Ladakh, during her four-day visit to the Union Territory. The Ministry of Finance said this reaffirms the Government of India's commitment to inclusive growth and infrastructure development in the Union Territory of Ladakh. The Union Finance Minister also interacted with the officials of the Union Territory administration. On the second day of her visit, she addressed an audience during the Credit Outreach Programme in Leh and handed over sanction letters from banks to beneficiaries under various Central Government schemes. During the Credit Outreach, loans worth Rs 5.13 crore were disbursed to beneficiaries under different schemes, including PM MUDRA, PM Vishwakarma, PMEGP, PM Micro Food Processing Enterprises Scheme (PM FME), and Joint Liability Group (JLG) loans. The Union minister also visited an exhibition of local handicrafts and handloom products by Self Help Groups (SHG) and Local Entrepreneurs in Leh. (ANI)
